LYRICS: Will you do me a favor, pianoman, please? I want you to write me a song They call me the Hero of Antelope’s Run And I’ve got to show them they’re wrong You see, it all started a week ago In the bar down on corridor three There was nobody there but the regular bums: Two losers, the barman, and me Slopping up booze in the north corner booth Was the old man they called Captain Jed ‘Cause he owned a tramp freighter, the old Antelope A ship that, like him, was half dead Now Molly, they say, was a crack pilot once A gal with a brilliant career But then she started doping on Regulus One And finally washed out down here And me, well, I wanted the Navy, bad But it seems that they didn’t want me So I stopped chasing stars, started sweeping up bars For bed, board, and all my drinks free It was quiet that night, with the docks closed down There was nothing due in for a week Not a ship was in port but the old Antelope When the red alert started to shriek: The whole station shook like a hurt living thing Then the lights dimmed and faded away Then the gravity went, and the air pumps cut out And the bartender started to pray “Ah, stow that bilge, head for the Antelope now!” Jed’s voice cut the dark like a knife “The station reactor’s gone critical load So run to the docks for your life!” When we got to the docks, we found waiting out there Every soul that had been left alive They begged with their eyes for poor old Captain Jed To tell them all how to survive “Break out the suits,” said the captain to them “For it’s dark and it’s airless and cold But I swear I can get you all out of here safe Packed in to the Antelope’s hold.” “Molly,” he asked, “Can you navigate?” “Aye,” she said. “Who do we have for a crew?” “The Antelope needs only three hands,” he said “And I think our young friend here will do.” The confident look that he flashed at me then Made my heart turn over with pride I never once thought about backing away I think I would rather have died Two hundred alive in the Antelope’s hold And the Captain, and Molly, and me We slammed the locks just as the station blew wide Jed hit the main jets to get free Now, that kind of G-force is rough on the heart Too much for his ticker to take So when we came around and we saw how he lay We knew Captain Jed wouldn’t wake So I took the comm, and the engineer board And Molly took helm and the nav With the manual spread out all over the deck And her mind for what they didn’t have She worked at that comp like a crazy machine While her hands shook like grass in the breeze But her skills were still sharp, and she jumped us three times Never minding the shakes and DTs Three jumps made clean, only one more was left When the ship’s alarm started to blast - Her old worn-out seals had come loose in the stress We were losing our heat and air fast On the bridge, there was only one vacuum suit left Well, they say Lady Luck is stone blind “Heads or tails,” was the question I started to ask When I felt myself hit from behind When I came to again, I was sealed in the suit She was belted down tight in her chair With her hands on the console, a smile on her lips And the ice on her face and her hair “Here’s the instructions to get us all home,” I saw she had left on the screen “If any old shipmates should ask after Mol Just tell them she finally died clean.” I made the last jump just like she told me to And I brought the ship in like she’s said They call me a hero now, for what I did But they don’t mention Molly or Jed So write me that song now, pianoman, please And sing it out often and loud So they all know the story of one kind of hero The kind that makes everyone proud For some kinds of hero are lunkheads like me Who only do things that they’re told And some kinds of hero are out for the glory They’re heroes on purpose, and bold Some become heroes for bravery, sure And some just because all is lost But a few are true heroes, like Molly and Jed Who give without counting the cost

This song feel like a whole Dr Who episode, it's incredible
or something you'd sing to a bunch of Kilingons
Damn! Teared up again. Every time.
This is wild... I never thought I’d get anything better than weyrdmusicman.
Thank you for posting this man. Gotta go clean some condensation off my visor now
Also, any chance you’ll be posting Bill Sutton’s work? The ones on weyrdmusicman are pretty degraded in a few tracks. I’ve never heard it any other way so I don’t mind but still.
I would love to, but, unfortunately, I don't have past due, I do, however, have another one of his albums I intend to post soon, there is also a rerelease of most of the songs from past due, you can buy it here; billbrendasutton.bandcamp.com/album/passing-through
@@SongsfromtheStars wow, did not expect that so quickly. Absolutely didn’t expect a 2020 remaster of the album, good news for once.
Pretty crazy to hear stray dog man without the audio glitches. Wish the background singer lady was in the remaster but still 11/10.
Keeping notifications on, looking forward to whatever else to you post, Sutton or otherwise :)
@@jacksons9546 Past Due is now uploaded!
Are you taking/needing money? I am so happy you uploaded high quality recordings!
None of these videos are monetized, so no.
@@SongsfromtheStars Now that's real punk rock
This is a Traveler character if I ever saw one.
Rest easy Molly and Jed.
I will never get the feeling back of hearing this song for the first time
Thank you
LYRICS:
Will you do me a favor, pianoman, please?
I want you to write me a song
They call me the Hero of Antelope’s Run
And I’ve got to show them they’re wrong
You see, it all started a week ago
In the bar down on corridor three
There was nobody there but the regular bums:
Two losers, the barman, and me
Slopping up booze in the north corner booth
Was the old man they called Captain Jed
‘Cause he owned a tramp freighter, the old Antelope
A ship that, like him, was half dead
Now Molly, they say, was a crack pilot once
A gal with a brilliant career
But then she started doping on Regulus One
And finally washed out down here
And me, well, I wanted the Navy, bad
But it seems that they didn’t want me
So I stopped chasing stars, started sweeping up bars
For bed, board, and all my drinks free
It was quiet that night, with the docks closed down
There was nothing due in for a week
Not a ship was in port but the old Antelope
When the red alert started to shriek:
The whole station shook like a hurt living thing
Then the lights dimmed and faded away
Then the gravity went, and the air pumps cut out
And the bartender started to pray
“Ah, stow that bilge, head for the Antelope now!”
Jed’s voice cut the dark like a knife
“The station reactor’s gone critical load
So run to the docks for your life!”
When we got to the docks, we found waiting out there
Every soul that had been left alive
They begged with their eyes for poor old Captain Jed
To tell them all how to survive
“Break out the suits,” said the captain to them
“For it’s dark and it’s airless and cold
But I swear I can get you all out of here safe
Packed in to the Antelope’s hold.”
“Molly,” he asked, “Can you navigate?”
“Aye,” she said. “Who do we have for a crew?”
“The Antelope needs only three hands,” he said
“And I think our young friend here will do.”
The confident look that he flashed at me then
Made my heart turn over with pride
I never once thought about backing away
I think I would rather have died
Two hundred alive in the Antelope’s hold
And the Captain, and Molly, and me
We slammed the locks just as the station blew wide
Jed hit the main jets to get free
Now, that kind of G-force is rough on the heart
Too much for his ticker to take
So when we came around and we saw how he lay
We knew Captain Jed wouldn’t wake
So I took the comm, and the engineer board
And Molly took helm and the nav
With the manual spread out all over the deck
And her mind for what they didn’t have
She worked at that comp like a crazy machine
While her hands shook like grass in the breeze
But her skills were still sharp, and she jumped us three times
Never minding the shakes and DTs
Three jumps made clean, only one more was left
When the ship’s alarm started to blast -
Her old worn-out seals had come loose in the stress
We were losing our heat and air fast
On the bridge, there was only one vacuum suit left
Well, they say Lady Luck is stone blind
“Heads or tails,” was the question I started to ask
When I felt myself hit from behind
When I came to again, I was sealed in the suit
She was belted down tight in her chair
With her hands on the console, a smile on her lips
And the ice on her face and her hair
“Here’s the instructions to get us all home,”
I saw she had left on the screen
“If any old shipmates should ask after Mol
Just tell them she finally died clean.”
I made the last jump just like she told me to
And I brought the ship in like she’s said
They call me a hero now, for what I did
But they don’t mention Molly or Jed
So write me that song now, pianoman, please
And sing it out often and loud
So they all know the story of one kind of hero
The kind that makes everyone proud
For some kinds of hero are lunkheads like me
Who only do things that they’re told
And some kinds of hero are out for the glory
They’re heroes on purpose, and bold
Some become heroes for bravery, sure
And some just because all is lost
But a few are true heroes, like Molly and Jed
Who give without counting the cost
I came here from TCC56's story on FimFiction with the same name, "Some Kind of Hero." The story made me tear up. Now I know what song it was based off of.
Damn that made me cry
why cant i find this on spotify?????? this is amazing, i love this song!
Unfortunately, the lyricist has repeatedly declined the requests we (and others) have made for recording her music.
So it tends to be at the bottom of the priority list for anyone I know.
Molly and Jeb we salute you o7
This song is basically "Survivor's Guilt: the Musical".
Oh no! It cuts out the last note's hang time!
That's a shame. I can't fix it in the video, but you can find the non-truncated file at the archive.org link in the description.
cover art is by Kelly Freas if anyone interested
These song and Sam Jones hit hard and I don't know why maybe because I'm a roleplayers and can put myself in these shoes easy. But now I want to make character based on molly and another on Sam
Why did music like this stop?
It didn't, the filk community is still around. discord.gg/S7yVxa4NEQ
I LOST THIS SONG FOR SIX MONTHS AND FOUND IT AGAIN TODAY
I'm not crying you're crying!
I'm not sure, but there is an episode of Farscape that bears a resemblance to this tune...
Im about to start screaming
This sounds weirdly muted. I actually prefer the older scratchy stuff. Whatever was done to this cut out part of their voice and it grates.
Nothing was done to it but the same that was done to the warped tapes. I think the warping just sort of stretched out the sound and changed the pitch, giving it something that it didn't have before.
@@ProjectileWaterfowl there is an entire layer of sound to the voice and music that has been cut out.
Its like someone used a static cleaner autofunction in audacity or some other audio editor. Those things DO reduce the quality and cut out part of the audio.
Anyone have sheets for this?
You can find sheets and a demo here: m.th-cam.com/video/HqQs_eyohdY/w-d-xo.html
OI. ANIMATIC CREATORS... Where are you all at?
I don't know about you guys but I could use a hit or five of Reg 1 after a story like that
Ima scream
Jesus.
I refuse to believe the person providing the lyrics is the survivor.
No, this is retelling.
Well of course. This is the song the piano man wrote. He heard her tale and seeing her as the hero she was wrote this :)
it's the piano man
@@mycoolhandgiveit So Billy Joel.
@@ShangZilla His Traveller character maybe, if one were want to be meta
John Maynard
I think this song sound better on the old worn recording.
The bad sound gives it more feeling, now when cleaned up it sound a bit dull imho.
This version lacks the soul in the vocals... The pacing is wrong, It's too fast and lacking necessary pauses.
This is a better preserved digitization of the old tapes, you probably heard a more worn out tape that has the sound extend and pause as a result of use.
@@centurion7993 This is literally a different performance altogether. Possibly even with different singer too. Songs literally don't match lengths even.
