    I’ve spent nearly 4 years on the island since 1989 and the changes I’ve seen are incredible. It’s gone from a very post war building site to a vibrant tourism spot. The wildlife is incredible and a photographers (me too) dream. The video is a superb little snapshot

    You’re right they are very special. I was fortunate enough to be deployed to the Falklands on three occasions between 1990 and 2007 whilst in the British Forces. Fantastic memories, I do hope Roddy and Lilly are well as I recalled staying with them for one night as I was met the following morning by one of the first cruise ships, the Enterprise as I recall. I sat on the beach after Roddy made me breakfast and was joined by the Carracarra whilst I waited to be picked up by a small craft before boarding the cruise ship and over night making our way to Stanley - amazing place with people I still call friends. Thank you for sharing. 👌

    Similar latitude to northern England, but due to the strong westerly airflow around Antarctica, the climate is colder, similar from stats I've seen to say the Shetlands, to the north of Scotland. A typical Summer's day in Stanley averages 14-16 deg C, Winter about 4-6 deg C. Both island groups are windswept and treeless.

    I find is astonishing just how similar the Falklands are to the west coast of Scotland. Apart from the colourful tin roofs, the penguins and the sea lions there would be no way of telling them apart. The climate and clouds, the gorse, the sheep, the colour of the grass and silver sand, the type of rock, the heather and peat (I didn’t even know peat existed outside of Scotland!), the what we would call “lochans” basically small ponds in the peat, the cold, deep blue of the water and the white foam when it crashes over the yellow lichen covered coastline, the empty sandy beaches and dunes, the species of seaweed, the old land rovers bumping over tiny moorland tracks, and even the windswept fences crisscrossing the landscape. Fascinating.

    • @davidrenton

      Peat is also very common in the West of Ireland, i used to stay on a farm there as a nipper, and they would use peat for everything, cooking, heating , this was in the early 80's

    Visited the Faklklands in 2015. This is a most excellent and beautiful documentary! Of all the places, it's the small homes with baby lambs kept in the yard (for bottle feeding) and the farm kitchens and cozy pubs. At one of these in Stanley, I asked the barman some history questions; he suggested I go ask one of the patrons and I introduced myself and was invited by the elder patron to join him for lunch. He was Governor Rex Hunt's driver when the invasion of 1982 occurred. I listened to his story, but the 1982 conflict was the least of his memories: he sailed for years in a trawler protecting transatlantic convoys during WW2. As understated as the Islands themselves. The people and the wildlife of the Falklands are beautiful: no desire but to live where they live in harmony with all. Don't miss the accurate to scale model of the solar system which extends many hundreds of meters along a trail by the shipwreck bay, with a sun the size of a huge beachball and an earth the size of a small marble!

    After Britain abandoned the islands Spain occupied them. They were under Spanish rule, specifically under the viceroyalty of Rio de la Plata. When they gained independence all those territories formed part of a new country. Once most territories were settled properly, the falklands came under Argentinian control. The problem they had was that they couldn’t defend the islands due to internal problems, such as civil wars. So the British saw a window and decided to reoccupy them. Now I’m not stating that it should be British or Argentinian, just a better explanation of the history

    • @Al4beef
      @Al4beef 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I assume you're Argentinian. What do you think of things that were taught in school about these Islands are Argentinian are valid? For example, one argument is that the islands are a part of the same tectonic plates.
      I am not British. I am Asian from the USA and I speak Spanish too. My understanding is that the islands obviously not Argentinian. It's seems a lot of Pro-Argentina arguments are somewhat illlogical

      al4sake first of all, don’t assume that I’m an Argentinian. You couldn’t be further from the truth. Second, I didn’t use the argument that the islands should be Argentinian as they are on the same tectonic plate (honestly, I didn’t know where u were going at with that).
      There arguments aren’t illogical. Britain’s arguments either. That’s why the case is so difficult. It’s one of the few relics of the old British empire still under control. And it’s the last place in all of Latin America that hasn’t gained independence. It’s illogical that in the 21st century a European power still has an overseas territory in Latin America.
      Ps. USA kicked out Argentina from the islands, search it up

    I visited the Falklands in 1986 as a serving member of the british army. Stationed at Mount Pleasant, I had a very special time there or my 104 day tour. I visited Sea Lion Island, and stayed on Saunders Island. my daily trip from camp was to Mare harbour where I fished, walked and even took a skinny dip in the ocean from Bertha's beach. While I was out for a run I noticed a pod of Commerson's dolphins following me in the surf! I dived into the surf and the dolphins swam away. It was one of my coldest swims I can remember. It was a surreal experience being there after the war working and but also having lots of free time to explore the Islands. Thank you for your video, It brought back fond memories of my time there all those years ago.

      @@luciano2003. Hi Luciano! No no, not a job. I was on holiday. With Holland America's "Zaandam". A cruise from Buenos Aires to Montevideo, Las Malvinas, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia, Puerto Montt and Valparaiso. Very exciting.

    Thank you for taking us/me to the Falklands where only a few can experience it.

    I have always wanted to live here so, so much. I hope one day I will make it there and enjoy the beauty of this hidden gem surrounded by ocean.

    I'm a Brit living in Scotland, I'm absolutely fascinated by the Falklands and its history, its such a dream of mine to visit and see the wildlife with my little girl. Even more so now having watched this brilliant video. Does it cost a lot for the rides on those small Red planes?
