Sorry for the longer delay between videos this month. I caught an annoying cold when editing the Bears video that lingered for longer than expected. And then my computer died. So it's been a scramble trying to get videos going again. A couple notes here: 1. I changed operating systems and, while my core editing software didn't change, I did lose all of my post-production music templates (for audio balance). So let me know if anything sounds weird as I rebuild them again. 2. All I could really do was write during the technical issues, hence this super-long Sky Police review. I love this episode, though, and don't mind going on and on about it 3. The new computer render has gotten rid of that weird dark gray background color. We are back to black again! Should be back to our regular 2 week'ish schedule now. Thanks for being patient this month! 😄
@@hanabira_mitsu I got a Mac, first one I've ever had. I am not at all an Apple person but have heard they are good reliable video editing machines, so I am giving them a shot
Simpsons Mytseries/Histories ("Mystories?" "Histeries"?): Homer's reading glasses. Sometimes a joke item, sometimes just a context item used to indicate he's doing something "smart" like working on taxes or whatever, but then sometimes he actually seems to need them and there's no joke, not even a "they fly off his face in surprise" joke. Just, normal reading glasses. One use more than the other? Same? Why have two uses at all? Does this explain anything else in Homer's life? What's the deal with Homer's reading glasses?
I second this suggestion!! My fave is when he pulls out half-moon spectactles! I think that’s in “Homer’s Triple Bypass”. Other than the famous courtroom scene in which Apu brings Homer’s “glasses” to the court’s attention, Homer’s half-moon spectacles are my fave! Dammit, now I got to go rewatch “Simpsons” until I manage to pinpoint the episode and scene in which Homer uses his Dumbledore/half 🌙 spectacles! Yay, more “Simpsons” binge watching! ❤
This is an example of one of my favorite kinds of Simpsons episodes: the ones where they pluck some characters from their massive collection and make a funky little group that's never been a group before and give them a common goal.
One of my favourite things about this episode is how Mel disguises himself as a biker but doesn't remove the bone from his hair which should've blown the disguise from the get go
Considering Flanders' costume just looks like him cosplaying as a shaikh, and Marge is the only Springfieldian woman with blue hair - at least that I know of (Sarah Wiggum's hair is more of a purply-lilac or lavender)... we'll just say that it's the Clark Kent Effect in action.
The planning scene is a gem. "You told me Uncle Stevie moved to Okinawa!" "What I *told* you was to wait in the car." also "If gambling's ok... I'm getting health insurance for the kids!"
As someone who checked out "Sky Police" after you recommended it in your Underrated Simpsons episode for modern Simpsons, and I am so happy you recommended it. Absolutely fantastic episode that brings in such a fun cast of characters in this sketchy affair.
3:50 while your worry about the message of more secular being less moral is possible, I personally read this scene as an unintentional callback to Marge in Chains. The second one goody-good leaves Springfield, the town went crazy. It's even more interesting that it's Apu this time saying this, as if he realized and remembered what happened that last time.
Really love these relaxed examinations of Later Simpsons episodes. This channel has been my constant re-appreciation not only for the series as narrative, but for how unique it is is experimenting with new stories centered in one little simulated universe we are so familiar with. Maybe we are like God in Marge's ant farm metaphor seeing what's new in Springfield and being amused at these episodes of surprisingly pleasant philosophical, funny, silly, topical and relationship driven moments between characters. Its them why we return after all, decades later.
Agree he was like furniture to Moe's bar since season 1. For someone who was a background character definitely played a big part in the show for all these years
I really appreciate you covering newer episodes. I just discovered you last month when i was really sick, binged all your vids, and now I find I use your reviews to decide which new episodes are worth giving a chance. Thanks for the content!
Haven’t seen this one, but you know, the way you described Marge’s crisis in faith, and the whole “I don’t have a place to pray anymore” really made me sad for her. Like lump-in-the-throat-getting-emotional sad. Marge is like the ONE person in springfield who’s genuinely good, and whom nothing bad should ever happen to. So the notion that what little she has gets taken away from her is upsetting.
Simpsons always does heists well, or anything with that particular espionage/conspiratiorial feel. Some other modern ones I loved for that reason are 'The Book Job' and 'Steal This Episode'.
I used to wonder why they called this episode after the opening gag, but hearing Marge's speech again makes me realize there's a double meaning. The episode kind of questions the idea of God as some omnipresent watcher that controls everything (or a Sky Police) and presents a more abstract and humanist idea.
What I like about the episode, is that aside from Wiggum, nobody was a jerk. The church people and their conflicts are clear, but Homer was nothing but supportive, the children only revealed the secret out of genuine, believable concern, and Lovejoy was actually willing to give up on the money for Homer. Even the casino boss seemed somewhat readonable!
I love your work. It's always a joy whenever a video of yours comes onto my feed, I don't care for any delays. Something in particular that stands out to me is the genuine analysis of the characters, plot, motivations, etc. You're not just summarizing the episode for us and that's rare to find these days. And you actually seem to enjoy the work! When you talked about how cute Homer is, that's an actual fan.
The way the episode reflects upon Marge's faith makes up for this episode conspicuously ignoring her history with gambling addiction, at least in my eyes.
Sky Police is one of my favourite Simpsons episodes too. The Sky Police theme is one of those songs that will randomly come back into my mind every so often. I liked seeing the characters let loose a bit without going too far. Marge looks much better with her hair down.
I'm honestly glad to hear someone else speak favorably on Sky Police, I remember watching it and thought retrospectively that the only reason it stuck in my head was because of that whole opener.
Sky police is one of my least favorite episodes. Had no clue I was the only one who hated it. That bit with wiggum murdering those street artists is so off putting. Maybe more palatable in a treehouse of horror, but I’m fairly certain it’s the most gore in a “canon” episode. It also feels weird to have a long standing character negligence murder so brutally
You need to do a video on Larry the Barfly. He been a background character since the first episode and made a recent episode where they killed him of after 35 sessions
An acquaintance and a friend that were counting cards and such were brought into the casino's backroom, they were offered a job and then gave them both a broken high-value chip as a gift after "suggesting they should leave"
I distinctly remember this being my first “modern” Simpsons episode, after being raised on seasons 4-7 on DVD, I caught this one on TV at a friends house and thought it was hilarious. Didn’t even occur to me that it came out so long after the “classics”
Sky Police! Where are you coming from, Sky Police? Nobody knows who you are! Seriously, though. if they ever decide to bring back Apu in a speaking role, I want them to use his college computer programming backstory. It's a shame it didn't come up much and they were more interested in his marriage and too many kids when the series went on. I love "deserves to be something more" Apu.
@@matti.8465 His silent cameo in this season shows he's still the cashier at Kwik E Mart. I agree. if they want to reinvent the character, they need to use that backstory and do something with it.
This is an episode that stuck with me a little longer than most other 2010s episodes, because the dichotomy of the opening setpiece being so ridiculous, and the actual story being so interesting and fulfilling, makes it a comparative stand-out. I still think Chief Wiggum in a jetpack is a tad too surreal to be a lead-in, I mean imagine if Lisa the Vegetarian lead in with something like Itchy & Scratchy Land, but I still liked the church gambling stuff/the bulk of the episode.
I think that might be part of the "joke" as far as her personality goes. She's kinda stuffy and out of touch. Obviously ignoring the original reason Matt Groening intended.
What the casinos do to deal with card counting is deal from a shoe so it reshuffles every hand. Also many Vegas casinos blackjack pays 6-5 instead of 3-2 which seems like a small change but basically eliminates the counter's edge.
In the 'Obi Wan' series, which I enjoyed despite some issues, features Temura Morrison cameo as an aged former clone trooper begging on the streets. As they had that increased aging added, they were all 'retired' by Episode IV.
I think I genuinely love this episode, and I’m one of those viewers who tends to enjoy the more deconstruction/bittersweet new Simpsons episodes. Other than just good fun and Marge/Helen looking smoking, what sticks with me is how sweet everyone is? The kids tell Homer the secret because they’re worried Marge hasn’t come home, Homer thinks he’s got to save his wife, and Marge from that point just wants her husband back.

I don't say this about modern episodes, but the plot of Sky Police could easily fit into a Classic era season, like 7 to 9, is just that well executed and natural to the show
