- Fox Cubs Playing Weston super Mare Somerset - We all know Foxes are fascinating creatures that have captured the imagination of people for centuries. Known for their cunning and intelligence, these animals have adapted to living in a variety of environments, from dense forests to urban areas. I have been fortunate to have observed these baby cubs grow as they play and adapt to new life in my garden. Observing their behavior as they play while their mother hunts for food.
Foxes are known for being solitary animals, but they also form strong bonds with their families. A typical fox family consists of a male, female, and their offspring. The female, known as the vixen, is responsible for caring for the cubs while the male, known as the dog fox, provides food for the family. Foxes are born in the spring, and the cubs stay with their mother until they are old enough to fend for themselves.
One of the most endearing behaviors of fox cubs is their love for play. Young foxes are incredibly active and curious, and they love nothing more than exploring their surroundings and engaging in playful activities. This behavior is not just for fun; it also helps the cubs develop important skills that will help them survive in the wild. For example, playing helps the cubs develop their agility, coordination, and hunting skills.
While the fox cubs are playing, their mother is usually out hunting for food. Foxes are opportunistic hunters and will eat a variety of foods, including rodents, rabbits, birds, and even insects. The vixen will often hunt in the early morning or late afternoon when prey is most active. She will leave her cubs in a safe place, such as a den, and go off to hunt.
While the mother is away, the cubs will engage in all kinds of playful behavior. They might chase each other around, roll in the grass, or play with sticks and other objects they find in their environment. Fox cubs are incredibly curious, and they love to explore their surroundings. They will often investigate new objects and scents, and they are not afraid to take risks.
One of the most adorable behaviors of fox cubs is their play fighting. Fox cubs will often engage in mock battles with each other, playfully nipping and pouncing on each other. This behavior is not just for fun; it also helps the cubs develop their fighting skills. Foxes are territorial animals, and they need to be able to defend their territory from other animals.
As the day goes on, the cubs will start to get hungry. When their mother returns from hunting, the cubs will greet her eagerly, hoping to get a share of the spoils. The vixen will regurgitate food for her cubs, and they will take turns eating. This behavior is not just for nourishment; it also helps the cubs bond with their mother and develop a sense of family.
As the cubs grow older, they will start to accompany their mother on hunting trips. This is a critical time for the cubs, as they need to learn how to hunt for themselves. The mother will teach her cubs how to stalk prey, pounce on it, and kill it. She will also teach them how to avoid danger and stay safe in their environment.

The playful fox cubs were filmed by myself, Jason Smith, in Weston-super-Mare. Most fox sightings are through the night as they tend to be nocturnally active. The Mother fox has been seen and is in a beautiful healthy condition with a large fluffy tail and silky jacket. The fox cub observations will continue before they leave the den and venture into the wildlife world near Wick-st-Lawrence. This is the 2nd fox family to have began life in this garden, safely born under the garden decking and shed.
My personal favourite fox video clip is seeing one of them play with a leaf, tossing it into the air and chasing after it to repeat the process. Chasing one another around the tree and playing hide and seek to pounce on one another, all traits for survival, hunting and stalking wildlife.
I hope you've enjoyed the video clips, i've spent many hours sat behind the glass watching and observing the cubs, they've already grown substantially. The 4th cub has sadly not been spotted for 3 nights but I hope he returns and is simply resting. They have all been given nicknames.... "Cheeky", "TipTail" and "Socks".
