The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has had its ups and downs over the years with the original trilogy being amongst the best of the best. I decided to take a look back at Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and his crew to see how these films stack up and which one I like the best, from worst to best.

I really love Dead Man's Chest. It's such an epic, fun, adventure movie. I was completely caught off guard when you put it at number 1. I thought I was the only one who liked it more than the 1st movie.

The first is one of my all time favorite movies. The second is awesome and a heavily underrated sequel. I remember being mixed on At World’s End but I really need to rewatch it one of these days. On Strangers Tides was a decently enjoyable adventure but nothing special. The less said about Dead Men Tell No Tales the better (sorry).

The original Pirates of the Caribbean was great and it still holds up. I recall the fourth one being good, but I haven't watched the sequels in a very long time and I think I only saw them once. I would encourage anyone who never saw the original to go ahead and watch it.

I've just been rewatching the original trilogy, I used to hate the sequels and i only ever rewatched the original but I have a new love for Dead Mans Chest and At Worlds End they have great soundtracks with epic action
I was shocked at first to see you put 5 (which I think is well shot, but awful) ahead of 4 (which I think is disappointing and ugly, but functional).
But MY MAN! Dead Man's Chest at #1!!! You absolute mad lad, I have to agree. I love all 3 in the original trilogy, but Dead Man's Chest finds a nice balance between campy and creepy that the other 2 just don't quite match.
Great commentary, liking the (new?) shirts! Agree on the ranking, and was surprised you did t put #1 at #1.

Great ranking Adam! I have to agree with your list. I've never cared for the 4th one, and the 5th feels a bit too "Disney" for me as well. The realistic colouring of at least the first one is really what sells it as a grounded production, even with its sometimes slapstick actions. Some of the shots from the first look like a documentary or something rather than a major blockbuster. Great stuff!
Unpopular opinion, I like the second one more than the first.
3 will always be my favorite! This is actually one of my favorite film franchises of all time. I didn't like the krackens death off screen because he asked Disney for a raise, but otherwise really incredible!

#2 juggles a lot of characters really well, even the British storylines are good to great. Beckett is very menacing and a great villain, and Norrington's journey, where he starts, his motivations and where he ends up are all well done. Then the additions of Bill Nighy as Davey Jones, and Stellan Skarsgard Bootstrap Bill are not only great but help Will Turner's character have a very satisfying arc.

Dead Man’s Chest is the best Pirates of the Caribbean sequel
I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how bloated it is. The story doesn’t even really get going until they escape the cannibal island. But I love the design of Davy Jones and his crew, and it makes for a scarier movie. The sword fight on the wheel is also good stuff, and don’t even get me started on the Kraken!

Yes!!! The second one is one of the finest adventure movies ever made, and I'm so happy to find out that a lot of people think the same. To this day this is one of the few cases where my blood boils every time I hear someone talk shit about it haha

In the 5th movie there was a mistske,it says that when jack hands the compass to anyone Salazar and his crew will be free. But jack had already gave the compass to Elizabeth and gibs.
I feel like the ranking is pretty easy. Lol. They literally get worse with each film.

I can remember 5, and actually kinda liked it, but I can’t remember anything that happens in 4 besides the opening palace escape, the mermaids, and Penelope Cruz looked good. Just rewatched 2 and 3 (they really are one 5-hour movie, but whatever), and I can at least appreciate that these movies embrace the bonkers plots. But since when did pirates care about rules, and politics? Jack Sparrow is not really even in the movie that much. That said, the first three films have effects and a distinct look that still holds up today.
I agree, but sometimes I like at worlds end more than black pearl. It usually flcutuates, but still amazing list!

I grew up with the first three and they are just so great to me. Johnny Depp is my hero as Jack Sparrow not to mention the supporting cast and villains. Davy Jones is just a beast of a villain, Barbossa often steals the show from Jack. Will and Elizabeth who grow over the movies. The crew with Pintel Raghetti Marty Gibs Cotton. Just a masterclass in movie making, the effects, not to mention how much they did practical. They made a set for that maelstrom battle in the end, and the ships they made from scratch. I could say so much more but I just love these movies.
And Yeah the score, it’s iconic.
The fourth movie really falls short because of how boring everything feels. The story feels insignificant because the main characters aren’t invested the fountain themselfs but only because someone else wants it. And yeah the phasing is much worse. And no ship battle…
The fifth one is just a disaster, Johnny can’t act the role anymore and is a complete drunk, al of the nuances of Jack are gone. And the film completely implodes when it nears the final act when they sort of duke it out in a awful looking splitting of the sea. Salazar is really great though but his menace is completely undermined by the inability of Jack to take him serious. Also I think the new characters just fall short.
I've only seen the first 3 and there all great.

Perfectly said!! 👏👍 The only thing I liked about 4 was the mermaid attack scene, Jack and his father Captain Teague talking about the Fountain of Youth having a drink, Jack and Barbossa tied up talking about the Black Pearl having a drink, and Blackbeard's intro walking out having a drink ... That's it. #5 was a much better improvement! 👍

My ranking:
1.) Dead Man's Chest - Talk about upping the ante!
Dead Man's Chest is the definitive Pirates of the Caribbean movie for me. I'm glad that it's getting a lot more love now from people, because it deserves it. You can't deny how it feels very much like a horror movie, with the Kraken, the Dutchman crew, and of course, the one and only... "Do you fear death?"
Davy Jones is the true antagonist of this franchise as far as I'm concerned (certainly the most legendary). Barbossa was villainous in the first one, but he became a hero by the time the third one came out (and even then, he was just a pirate having fun in Curse of the Black Pearl and he wanted to get rid of the curse once and for all). Blackbeard in 4 was meh; Salazar in 5 was meh; Cutler Beckett in 2 and 3 was really subtle, but his soft-spoken accent drove me nuts. But Davy Jones is an unstoppable force of pure evil, especially in this movie.
They developed the main characters further than ever before; Will's father is in this movie (and his relationship with Will is fantastic); Jack Sparrow becomes the true Captain of the Black Pearl; the romance between Will and Elizabeth; the Dutchman reveal; Davy Jones' first scene; the Black Pearl being brutally ravaged by the Dutchman and the Kraken; Elizabeth Swan was finally becoming a badass and would be a full-on badass Pirate-Queen in the third movie; Tia Dalma; all the memes involving Jack Sparrow (running away from the natives; "I've got a jar of dirt!").
I could go on and on. This movie is awesome.
2.) At World's End - Epic. There are no other words to describe it.
It should be noted that this was all before Endgame existed and was even a thing. At World's End did all of that first, and did parts of it better.
I will always be a massive defender of this movie no matter what people say about it. Also... IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE END OF THE FRANCHISE. (IT HAS "END" IN THE TITLE, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!) Especially considering where this series has gone over the years.
3.) Original (Curse of the Black Pearl) - Most people put this movie at number one. And in a lot of ways, I get it. If you just want a fun stand-alone adventure movie, this is it.
But I personally prefer the epicness of 3 and the horror vibes of 2.
Whatever... to each their own. Because by the time you get to the original trilogy of any franchise, it mainly boils down to personal taste/preference. And this is mine.
4.) Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge - I mean... it's better than 4, but that's not saying much. I don't hate it by any stretch, I enjoy it; but 4 and 5 are not cannon in my eyes, as 3 (once again) should have been the end. Period.
But also, it just proved that the franchise was running out of steam, and relying on nostalgia to (SPOILERS) bring the Black Pearl back admittedly felt forced (even though I'm personally glad they brought that ship back, as it was sorely missed in On Stranger Tides).
Just like the fourth one, this movie didn't need to happen at all. But it still exists, whether we like it or not.
And speaking of On Stranger Tides...
5.) On Stranger's Tides - Where to even start with this?
For me, making Johnny/Jack Sparrow as the lead wasn't the problem. Because he was the best part of it, as you would expect. Also, Blackbeard wasn't the worst part of the movie either... he was just "meh" in my opinion.
You wanna know what my real problems were?
1.) This movie didn't even need to exist in the first place. At all.
2.) Part of the reason it didn't need to exist was because the third movie ended the story (as I have said many times by now), so doing more was just a way to, well... make $$$$$. And it makes the ending to the third movie almost meaningless, which was a huge slap-in-the-face to fans of Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.
3.) They tried to change things up from the first three (Will and Elizabeth aren't in this one, Director Gore Verbinski is gone, Pintel and Ragetti (my favorite sidekicks in this franchise) are M.I.A., the Black Pearl is contained in a small bottle and is never released by anyone, etc.).
But it didn't matter at the end of the day, because the fifth one tried to undo most of it, and fans hated both movies regardless. (It's also worth noting that the fifth movie bombed at the Box Office.) So how did that work out for you, Disney? Not very well, huh?
Keep in mind this was before the Last Jedi/Rise of Skywalker disaster (even though I don't personally hate those movies... yet), and they already did this with Pirates of the Caribbean. Yikes.
I mean, if there's anyone out there that likes On Stranger's Tides, good for you I guess, but you are in the minority. This movie needs to be forgotten quickly by Pirates of the Caribbean fans and movie-lovers in general.
As for the eventual Pirates 6 (because it will happen), I have nothing against Margot Robbie, but I feel like she should be a female side-kick to Johnny Depp instead of being the lead. I think her and Johnny's chemistry and comedic-timing would be fantastic (plus, it's not like they haven't done female side-kicks to Jack Sparrow in the series before... *cough* Keira Knightley *cough*).
And, of course, now that Johnny has won the trial against Amber Heard, Disney has to bring him back. Otherwise, Johnny Depp/Jack Sparrow fans will be pissed, and for good reason.

I would swap Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest. The second one is still good but doesn't hold up on its own, I kinda needs the third to complete the story. The first is a complete package. I also totally agree with your assessment of the Transformers movies, the first is passable, the rest are trash.
You could say that about Empire Strikes Back too.. but no one would.

Simple. 5 is fucking terrible, with a cartoon and witless Jack Sparrow, and a terrible plot that retcons shit and makes no sense.
4 at least has the mermaid scene, with that awesome Hans Zimmer score, and the opening is good, and they introduced a good character in Penelope Cruz. 3 and 2 are almost equal, both really great, and 1 is just the best

Dead man tell no tales is one of the worst sequel ever made to a blockbuster. Jack is out of character, Will and Elizabeth are wasted as we erase thé perfect ending of the third movie and make come back Davy Jones for safe fanservice. It’s a derivative and full version of At World End. 1/10 please to better.

On Stranger Tides is a generic adventure with sometimes enjoyable characters, but it remains flat and boring most of the time. Not infuriating like the 5th but a very generic movie. Barbosa has a cool arc and Jack’s relation with Angelica has an interesting setup, but that’s all. 4/10
3) « You betray me ? », « No, I betrayed them. »
At World’s End’s final battle is the most epic final battle of the saga, and it leads to a perfect ending for the main cast (Will, Elizabeth, Jack, Davy Jones, Barbosa, Cutler Beckett, and Calypso), with a very powerful farewell ending and a sense of accomplishment of the trilogy. The death of Davy Jones, the death of Cutler Beckett, the farewell between Elizabeth and Will who fulfills his new duty as the Dutchman captain, and the last shot with Jack continuing his quests happiest than ever, those are the most powerful moments out of all the saga and it feels like a perfect conclusion set up from the first movie.
The rest is a complete mess that has a lot to tell but fails to put it all together in the same direction, and a lot of potential is wasted. There are great sequences, like the nightmare sequence of Jack, the Singapour sequence with Sao Feng, the council of the pirates with the Keith Richard cameo, the scene where Davy Jones and Calypso reconnects together. But it’s not well put together at all : the pirates don’t participate at the ending battle which makes their presence in this movie useless, they kill the Kraken off screen which is very underwhelming, Norrington is wasted to be just a tool for the characters to be freed at one point. Everything concerning the main characters making alliances between themselves and fulfilling their own goals is interesting because every character is proactive in the plot, but it leads to a messy story that sometimes feels rushed, and an absence of payoff of what the previous movie installed. This makes this movie just okay I guess. I see the passion behind this project, and I am very happy for Gore Verbinsky who managed to build a full trilogy with a great worldbuilding of this pirates universe, but this movie doesn’t work as well as the first two for me, we can easily see the script was written in a rushed time as a lot of things feels not very well tied together. But at least it ends the trilogy on a high note. It’s a mess but an enjoyable mess, unlike Dead Men Tell no Tales who is boring and insulting. 6/10
2) « KRAKEN ! »
Well this is how you do a sequel ! Dead Man’s Chest isn’t quite as good as the first movie. The climax is a bit less energetic and tense, the story is a bit less complete as a story, it feels more like a part one of a dyptic with the third movie. But it still fills the criteria of a perfect sequel by naturally expanding the universe of the first movie, introducing new conflicts with Cutler Beckett and Davy Jones introduction, and expanding on the character by making them face their acts at the end of the first movie and face real world consequences. This might be the darkest chapter of the saga, but it also have great humor with one of the coolest sequence in the three-sword battle between Norrington/Jack/Will. It explores more over the selfishness of the characters who lead them to defeat. If I could point some issues, it would be a little bit of a mess in the end of the movie, but it’s mostly nitpicking. This is a great sequel and a great setup to the third movie by elevating the stakes. 8/10

It all started it. Curse of the Black Pearl is one of the most bold and audacious film for Disney. It starts as a crazy idea. « Hey ! Let’s do a film based on our most popular attraction at Disneyland ! And let’s do it dirty and have a frightening universe with anti-heroic characters, ghost and skeleton, dirty imagery with dark places. Sure your kids will love it. ». But it’s held with a great passion behind. This universe feels real and alive, it has a great authenticity in it. The characters are colorful and nuanced. Norrington is authoritary but we can see he is only doing his duty and what he feels right, and he ends up showing some humanity by accepting Elisabeth’s choice and letting Jack flee in advance. Barbosa is frightening and malicious, but he can be sympathetic as we hear more and more of his backstory. Elisabeth starts as an archetypal Disney princess who wants adventure but is kidnapped and needs to be saved, but she embraces the adventure she has been thrown into and she becomes the one who saves Will in the end. Will Turner is not yet as his best but he is compelling as a fish out of water who discovers the world of pirates. He has a great dynamic with Jack Sparrow they both form a complete duo of character, as they learn to know how the other thinks and acts. They end up forming a duo during the evasion sequence. Jack Sparrow is such an icon. The first sequence shows how quirky, manipulative, and intelligent he is, by making himself pass into a fool. He represents the child who doesn’t want to grow up and wants to keep being free and go around the world with his ship.
This is just pure adventure with compelling characters, lively and real looking environments, and a flawlessly paced story with every character’s story coming up together. 9/10
Hot take but I think curse of the black pearl is the worst of the original trilogy. Still love the movie but whenever I’m in the mood to revisit the franchise, most of the time I’m either choosing dmc or awe

I think Dead Men Tell No Tales is the most disappointing film in the franchise. The trailers hyped me up and made me feel like the franchise was returning to its roots. I was so upset when the film started and I realised it was going to be a poorly executed adventure film where our once great charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow is now overly drunk to the point of annoyance and all the spark that made him such a great character was ripped away. The supporting cast and villains were also not well utilised. Such a disappointing end to a promising start.
Compared to today's films, they are ALL Oscar bait!
At Worlds End is the worst of the 5. It’s so overstuffed, with plots and characters, all the action just becomes noise by the end, obscenely long, it’s the only one I actively wanted it to be over. It’s essentially Transformers on pirate ships. All the rest are perfectly watchable family adventure films, with only the first one being a genuinely fantastic film.
1. The Curse of the Black Pearl - One of the greatest movies of all time. Masterpiece.
2. Dead Mans Chest - This one has some of the most iconic scenes of the franchise. Loved it.
3. On Stranger Tides - Refreshing. Nice Coloring. Great Story.
4. At Worlds End - Too Long. Too many characters and plots that u cant keep track of. But the ending is totally worth it.
5. Dead Men Tell No Tales - Trash, nothing good about this one.
