Every year I find my person. The person whose videos I can’t wait to watch. The videos that I don’t want to end because they’re so enjoyable. The person who’s narration is calming and informative and heartfelt. The person whose videographer skills are seamless with just the right amount of trail view and personal comments. So this year you are my person Jay. See you tomorrow.

I've been following you since your AZT videos, and I haven't been able to put a finger on what is so good about your channel until now, Jay. But I think it is because you show what is interesting out on the trail, without any pretense, keeping the experience of hiking central in all the videos. Like the ice crystals under a rock! Pure joy in such a simple moment. Scenic views and dramatic time lapses and cinematic hiking videos that feel like they could be released in IMAX are cool and all, but it ends up feeling very Hollywood to me. I love how simply you portray the trail, and the experiences you have along it. It feels so universal to the experience of any hiker enjoying the outdoors anywhere... super lovely. Thanks, Jay! Looking forward to seeing the rest of your journey.

Opposums are never rabid! An interesting fun fact about them, their metabolism is so slow and their body temp is so low, viruses don't survive well in their bodies. He was just treating you like T-rex in all the movies. If he doesn't move, you can't see him, lol! Awesome video! Thanks for taking us along on your journey.

Hay Jay, your Forester nerd here. How to tell if branches are dead in the winter. Look for sluffing or missing bark, a lack of buds at tips of branches compared to other branch tips on same tree or same nearby species, fungal growths is an indication of rotten wood even if the branch is alive. Also avoid trees with large cavaties.
That delicate structures you saw on the tree earlier in the trail were a type of fungus that decomposes dead wood. That tree was so covered, it was probably dead.

I love that you are "in tune" and watching your environment. You've done it Sir -- your 'Possum encounter is rare. -- Possums are very important to a healthy forest ecology. They may have lots of babies (rodent family) but they live relatively short lifespans and do an awesome job of cleaning the woods of harmful decay as scavengers. Don't back it in a corner though...can get mean suddenly.
If you are real lucky -- you will have an encounter with a "Boomer" (a mountaineers naming) while in the high mountains of the Park. Very rare. Like a chipmunk but not that species...a true squirrel instead...it won't me shy and will in jumping in low brush instead of high in the trees.

Really love hiking in the early spring and winter when the leaves are off the trees. Seeing the scenery in your video, can't get enough. I'll follow you along. Lived in Johnson City for about 6 years and loved hiking the trail and swimming in the summer. Take my scouts up there every couple of years. We always hike south, meeting trail hikers along the way and the shelters are always exciting. Nothing like see 15 scouts bundled up for the night, like sardines. They always loved going to the general store in Helen after being on the rail for a few days. My favorite hike is Laurel Falls section up near Hampton, TN. Did many exploration trips in that valley over the years. Roan Mountain another favorite. The mountain laural, oh, I heard you mention Franklin, don't miss Cafe Rael. Cash only, great food, watchout for the chocolate cake. Keep up the trail views.

Jay - I'm thoroughly enjoying your AT videos and upto Ep 13 on your PCT vids. During one of your PCT videos you asked your audience what it is you're doing right. I've known you for many years and it's you that you're doing right. Your raw excitement, love of life, pure emotion and sharing that with us is what you're doing right. Keep it up my friend and thank you for sharing your AT experience! -dave

Hi, friend, my husband and I like your videos a lot. Thanks for shining a little spotlight on my very favorite animal, opossums! They’re such good critters! Their body temperature is too low to harbor the rabies virus, so it’s extremely rare for them to be rabid. Snuggle up with one or more in your tent for shared body heat. Kidding, mostly. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. 😆

I just discovered your channel, Jay and am really enjoying your videos. I’m housebound because of health issues so this is the way I get to enjoy the beauty of nature. Your obvious delight in the natural world just heightens my own enjoyment. Those icicles were amazing! Thank you for all the time you spent showing the beauty.
I used to do wildlife rehabilitation through my city nature center. I’ve taken care of a lot of baby opossums . You think that one you met on the trail was cute - you should see the babies! BTW they don’t get rabies.
I’m very much looking forward to continuing to see through your eyes as you travel the trail.

AT tip for today...to create your own mini waterfall to fill water bottles; use a rhododendron leaf secured by a rock in the stream...set it where the stream starts to fall a bit and it creates a spout you can get a bottle under.

Wonderful highlights! I hope the adorable opossum eats those nasty ticks. You have to watch out for ticks, even during the winter. The ticks hide from the freezing cold under the leaf litter and can be active above 40F. During the winter you can spot widow makers, dead branches, by looking for branches with missing bark and/or missing twigs. The ice formations, crystals and icicles were amazing. During the winter I still use my Sawyer Squeeze to filter water. I keep it in a mini Ziploc bag in my shirt pocket to keep it from freezing. I definitely like to filter out the tiny crawlies from the water. Thanks for sharing another awesome video!

To answer your question, if the branch looks like it might break or is broken, that's a dead fall. Most dead trees are ok but be careful of ones that might fall. It takes a lot of experience. Keep up the great work.
P.S. those swimming things?, that's why I use a filter, lol

    Jay,
Amazing inspirational videos... I relish the tranquil moments when you record the curious wonders of nature. Your videos support what the Zhuangzi, an ancient Daoist philosopher, proposed: for us to walk in "vast mountain forest. " Because this human endeavor can "reopen the mind." It "unblocks" the "apertures" through which human beings were at one time receptive to the Way of things so that we may again "wander the Heavenly."

Tried 1999, messed up my knee, and can not go for more than 2 to 3 days before I am done. I have lived along the trail for 30 years plus. From Western N.C., Asheville up to Boone and I am up in VA just a few minutes from the A.T., below Peaks Of Otter. I'll keep watching your hike and you are in my part of the A.T. so if you need help, I have people. You can see shoots off the smaller branches that are alive and dead stay are bare. It is a finer detail but if you can get the "Golden Hour" of the sun, it helps. Have fun!

Enjoying your channel: Brings back memories!
1st. You set your tent up on the dirt next to fire ring? Cold, hard and if it rains your tent will get covered in black ash! Setup on leaves, warmer, softer and no dirt if it rains.
2nd. If you read chemical treatment drops they work in 10 min at 70 degrees, 8hr at 40 degrees. The water in Georgia is also full of fine mica just look at it in sunlight it sparkles. Not to good for you it’s like micro razor blades.

For dead branches in the winter you can look for the really tiny kindling type sticks/stems since those will be the first to dry and break off in wind/snow. So if they are still there the branch they are on is probably still alive!

Hey Jay! I love those eggs. I call those eggs in purgatory. Totally one of my favs! Sorry your phone is glitching. That must be hard. I hope you know the production quality is so great, and the content is simply amazing. Wow is right man! Today’s trail section and views were so beautiful! It totally makes me want to be there! Great shots of that ice. I love taking macro photography of the hidden little worlds you find in the nooks and crannies of the forest. Oddly, it takes me back to when I was a kid and watching the Smurfs. Using a scoop for water is such a PITA. I just don’t have the patience I think. One tip we learned at Philmont: when using drops or tablets, turn your bottle upside down and twist the cap a little to purify the threads and cap. You lose a tiny bit of water but you know your germ and bug free! 😂 Why isn’t the possum moving? Oh yeah it’s playing possum. That was gold. It is so hard to know what’s a widow maker and what’s not. You just gotta make your best guess. Altaplex looks great, I’m excited to see what you think of it, I’m on the fence about grabbing it. Thank you so much for another crazy long and amazing video! You are so kind to give us so much content to enjoy. Simply awesome. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

Love your attitude. I enjoy watching your journey. I live near the GSMNP and have hiked short parts of the AT. I'm living vicariously through your videos. 😂 At 71, I doubt I will be attempting to hike the entire AT. Wish I had known about it when I was younger. Praying you have a safe journey and great hiking to the end at Kahtadin! I'll be "virtually" hiking with you. ❤🙏😊

Next time you are in town or go by a garbage can, look for a 0.5 liter water bottle. Cut off the bottom 2-3 inches and you have a perfect (and very light) scoop. Also, watch for ice formations on the ground that look like a honeycomb. They are also very interesting.

Wow the giant icicles are amazing - ice never seen anything like - or like the crystals underneath the rock! And the cute opossum - what a day!
