- In today's episode of Motorcycle Rewind, we're diving into a common issue many vintage motorcycle enthusiasts face - a non-functioning electric starter. Specifically, I'm tackling this problem on my classic 1971 Honda CB350. We'll focus on three key components: the starter button, the starter solenoid, and the starter motor itself.
🔧 What You'll Learn:
Starter Button Troubleshooting: Discover how to check and fix the starter button. We'll cover how to test for continuity and what signs indicate a need for cleaning or replacement.
Solenoid Inspections: Learn how to diagnose a faulty starter solenoid. I'll show you how to listen for the telltale clicking sound and how to use a multimeter to test its functionality.
Starter Motor Examination: We'll dive deep into the heart of the system - the starter motor. I'll guide you through disassembling, inspecting, and identifying common issues like worn-out brushes or dirty components.
🛠️ Why This Matters: Understanding these components is crucial for any vintage bike enthusiast. Not only does it save you a trip to the mechanic, but it also deepens your connection with your machine.

Throughly impressed. You take tinkering to a new level man 😂
It wants to be fixed and someone has to do it. Thanks for watching. Happy Thanksgiving.
So good to see someone else match wiring color. I've traced tail light wiring that was butchered and five different colors used. Happy Thanksgiving to you and family.
Mismatched wiring makes me crazy. 😂 Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.
starts so well, an excellent example of to chase down a problem.
Thanks Ian. Really appreciate you watching.
I own a 1980 SR 500 in stock form so good to see you putting these old bikes back on the road where they belong!@@motorcyclerewind
I love your methodical approach to fault finding. If I didn’t have the same colour, I would have used heat shrink to cover it. Great little bike 🙂
I would have done the same thing with the heat shrink.
Well done! Def. repair over replace whenever possible! Happy Turkey Day!
This was a fun one. Always great when a plan comes together. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
As always Eric, great job.Like your fault finding .

Same to you!!! Thanks for watching.
Hope you and your family have a Wonderful Thanksgiving! 🦃 👋🏻♥️
Thanks. Hope you do as well.
A shop would have just ordered a new one, you had it fixed in less time than it would have taken to locate, order, receive and install the new part.
You’re right. Especially when they realize that to change the control you have to remove the handlebars. The wires run through them.
Really enjoyed it. Thanks.
Thanks it was fun. Thanks for watching.
Haven't had this problem yet TG, good to know - thanks Sir. CB750F one of your projects?
It’s an easy fix. Just need to figure out where it’s broken
Its is a 1979 CB750k
What ever happened to the CB 750 engine build? Looking forward to that
It is together on the stand. Need to finish a few projects so I can put the 72 CB750 back together.
Haha! I just came across a somewhat similar situation. My 78 hawk tii had a starter button that had become less and less reliable with use. It worked fine most days then needed a wiggle of the button as it was pressed in to work, until it just quit making contact. My leg is getting tired starting this bike, so it's time to end the procrastination and dive in.
I'm guessing the wire broke off like your project or the pin broke off. If the pin broke off, have any ideas on what to use to repair it?
If the pin broke. Let me know I may have a button laying around.
@@motorcyclerewind wow! Thanks
Turns out mine was just really sludged up with gunk. I cleaned everything with electronic contact cleaner and scuffed all the contacts. Boom, it all worked.
However, when I put it all back together I noticed the plastic was kinda warped. The screw that held the internal button assembly in wouldn't go back the way it was. I could persuade it, but the button was really sticky. I left the screw out and it works. You can't tell once the assembly is back on the bars
Now, on to figuring out my blinkers, lol
i see that you have a few vintage bikes,i was wondering how much do 1976-78 honda cb400f super sport in good condition are selling for now a days? thank you....
The CB400f’s are great motorcycles. The will depend on condition and location. My guess would be between 1k to 8k where I am in New Orleans.
In 71 you could just run & bump , not the new high comp models .
That’s right. That takes more energy than kicking it. 😂 thanks for watching.
