    Hey so I rewatched this video again because I think you actually had a great idea with this and I wanted to see if I could figure out why the coals spread to another lane. What I noticed is right where you had that big piece of pecan chunk is where it jumped over. I'm thinking that the wood chunk lit the charcoal on the next lane.
    Man I'd love to see you redo this test with no wood, or at least remove some charcoal to place in some wood, and see what happens. No cook , just a duration test where you check incrementally to see that it's still following the path.
    ✌😎👍

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ruben! Thanks for the interest in this crazy snake method experiment. Good observation and thinking it was the chunk that ignited, but I believe that
      the charcoal got really hot in the direction of where the stoker was blowing, which heated the baffle material and ignited the charcoal in that next lane in the stoker direction. Sorry I dismantled this basket so it can't be done again, but if I would try it again, for shits and giggles, I would have a small air gap between duel baffles so they wouldn't get so hot as to ignite the charcoal in the next lane. But really all you need is to use the minion method, and control the temps. The charcoal will burn or not burn at the desired rate of what your set temp is. Snake or minion?........doesn't really matter. I just like playing! 😁 👍🍺 \🔥/

    After thought, spiral the two pieces of metal, put a 1/8 " gap between them using small pieces of metal all the around the spiral. Then do a tack weld every two or three inches around the whole assembly, on the top and the bottom of the spiral, but don't tack weld your spacers. Remove the spacers so you are left with two spiral sheets tack welded to separate them by 1/8". I'm going to try that

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      :-) Wow! I have to say I'm impressed with the thought You have put into this! Most people only want to know where they can buy a product that has been mass marketed! LLLLLL You're a thinker...I like that!
      Well.....You are exactly right about doubling it up to have that air insulator....I believe it will work as planned.
      With this original design and set up, using a Stoker, the Stoker was blowing and concentrating the oxygen supply to
      that side of the charcoal ring. Which we know makes charcoal burn hotter and faster. Thus the reason why it jumped over only at that point. I've used this ring in other set ups without the use of the Stoker....and it burned slowly and consistently around the ring without any jumping of the coals. But I have to say........take this idea and
      expound on it! It will Work....I know it will! When I get time I will probably hack this one apart and add that second
      strip! Let Me know how Your version of the Slow Burn Basket works for You. Your Rock....Metal On!!!! \m/

    totally awesome! wow just wow! love those handles! wish I could find some good ones like that for my WSM...it's a momma dog to lift without them. Hey just a thought.... if you ever need to fill the heat diffuser, try lava rocks or kiddie play sand. I use that in my WSM instead of water. then put some foil over it like you did for you pan for easy clean up. it seems to help keep the Temps more stable and helps disperse the heat. just a thought is all. love the channel! keep it up my friend!

    If your spiral was made with the metal bent double before the spiral was made, the double thickness might keep the fire from jumping, assuming the fire is going through the metal, not around it.

    I have a suggestion for your Ring of Fire. Use two. Attach them with small bolts and nuts, with one nut in between to maintain a small air gap between the rings. Your fire jumped because the metal got hot enough to ignite the coals in the next ring. A small air gap will prevent that.

    • @thomabb
      @thomabb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should also rig a baffle and diffuser on your stoker so the air isn't blowing directly on the coals.

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmmmmm….. well……. I'm not sure about this suggestion. But I do appreciate your thoughts. You Rock!

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bingo! Now You got it! The stoker was blowing in one concentrated direction. It needs to be diffused! Nice going My Friend! That's for watching! Rock On!!! \m/

  • @DavidBaileyMinistries
    @DavidBaileyMinistries 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just saw your impressive video today and I haven't researched any follow up video but I was wondering if you figured out how to stop the "fire jump" you had with this test. If you didn't already figure it out I'd like to offer a dual shield solution. I'm thinking that the metal separating the coals got hot enough to ignite the next set of coals prematurely so all you need is an insulator on the spiral metal that you have. Air is your best insulator so I was thinking that instead of using one sheet of metal for the spiral, use two sheets spun together but not perfectly so you would have a small gap of air between the two pieces of metal, so there's a small gap of air sandwiched between the two closely wound spirals. I believe that would achieve the results you are looking for. Buy the way, I'm going to try what I'm suggesting and let you know the results.

    Matter of interest... What length piece of steel did you use to create the spiral. Thinking of similar for my WSM for an overnight no water cook

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bro! Thanks for the interest in this idea. It's a crazy snake method, I guess You can call it? Didn't really work the way I had hope, because the stoker was feeding the hot coals and it kinda burnt sideways. But I bet with even air intake it would work better. I couldn't tell the length to be honest. Not sure if I would even pursue this.
      I was just trying something fo fun. I'de just get a good basket filled and do the minion method from the center. Forget water.....use ceramic briquettes or play sand in the bowl. They add thermal mass.....they get hot and stay hot! Will save on fuel consumption and help even out temps. Metal On!!! \m/

      Hey Doug! I've got lots of Vids using a PID controller Stoker. It's the way to go if you want to load up the pit and get some sleep on an over night cook. Also a great idea to use because it keeps such steady temps that it doesn't waste fuel. Plenty of them out there to choose from.

      Good question and thanks! I wouldn't say it ran hot with a minion.....it all comes down to controlling airflow to control temps. Just wanted to try this method to see if I can save some fuel. It looks like your ring would work fine without the stoker unit. Maybe that's why the fire jumped near the stoker. Great cook.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Absolutely amazing mods! You are obviously a pro a grilling techniques and custom mods. Please work on your camera skills though. The video was hard to watch with the camera moving around and making me seasick.

    Hi HM. you leave me in suspense. I'm still waiting for that really long cook to end to find out how long it would go... The first spiral snake was no less haunting. Glad you got it burning for 6 hours. I think the problem is that the sheet metal divider is not enough of a thermal barrier to keep the fire from jumping over to another circle. What if you could use an insulating material of some kind?
    But I have to commend you for being radically innovative and daring. Who else could get away with roasting some weenie snack sticks?
    Got a question for you. I think I saw you with a controller that is available as a kit and has lots of possibilities. Now I can't find it again. I was probably watching it while not being logged into TH-cam. Was that you?

    your suppose to crank the heat up after you wrap it

    • @HeavyMetalBarBQue
      @HeavyMetalBarBQue  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why????????? The temps naturally get higher inside the wrapped foil because of the steaming effect.
      That's why it automatically cooks faster when You wrap it. Good luck!

      Maybe to You……..but not for Me. This burns even with consistent temps without the use of a stoker. This is just one example of the set up. It Only burned sideways because of the oxygen supply. Smoke On! \m/
