  • Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi was at the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the life of legendary rock star Lemmy on 15 June 2017. Before the ceremony, BBC's Chris Hawkins sat down with Iommi and talked about Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known as Lemmy.

The memorial has been installed at Port Vale's ground just down the road from where Motörhead frontman Lemmy was born in Burslem. Vale Park was also chosen because Motörhead headlined an iconic gig, Heavy Metal Holocaust, there back in 1981, and their most famous hit, Ace Of Spades, has been adopted as an anthem by the club's fans.
A rock innovator and one of Tony's and Ozzy Osbourne's best friends, Lemmy's music was one of the foundations of the heavy metal genre. In all, he spent four decades in Motörhead. He passed away aged 70 on December 28, 2015, just two days after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

    2 of the OGs
Iommi truly IS THE creator of Metal
Clapton, Hendrix, Page had some super heavy, electric psychedelic, ballsy blues etc etc , but it was truly Tony Iommi who consistently created riffs that ultimately birthed a new RnR genre.
    -Iron Man
    -Electric Funeral
    -Black Sabbath
    -Symptom of the Universe
    -Sweet Leaf
    -Into the Void
Just track after track of heavy HEAVY bone crunching riffs.
And to this day Ozzy era Sabbath is as heavy as anything there’s ever been. But unlike a lot of metal bands early Sabbath had a rhythm section with Butler-Ward that created a kick ass funky, bouncy rhythm to accompany Iommi’s nasty riffs, Ozzy’s peircing, almost demonic voice was the 🍒 on top that makes Ozzy era Sabbath one of my top 5 all time favorite bands.

Cream invented heavy metal. Black Sabbath just took over where they left off with at the exact same blueprint. Before Tony formed Black Sabbath he was in the band called mythology and they did all John mayall numbers with Eric Clapton. He basically copied Eric's leads almost note-for-note. 🙋

@@richardhincemon well that's what you think because you never heard the metal albums before Black Sabbath so that's all you have to go buy is your limited brain capacity.

Thank you for your MOR and Sabotage documentary's. You definitely earned a well deserved sub. If you plan on doing any in the future, may I suggest Sabbath Bloody Sabbath? I think that one would be interesting with Tony having writers block until they rented out a haunted castle. I know you would do it justice!

The 2 best bands ever.....Hawkwind and Black Sabbath (with Motorhead close behind those 2, and adding a different dimension too)

@@TheTapesArchive there's so much 'gold' to choose from. For most of us Hawk fans the golden era is definitely their works from their 1st album in 1970 to say the mid 80's.(That's not to say there's plenty brilliant stuff from mid 80's to present day too) Yet all their work during that 70 to mid 80's period is so diverse in many ways so plenty to ponder over as every album has something different yet highly interesting imho.
Roadhawks here is a mid 70's compilation album that gives a taste of how diverse their earlier sound is : th-cam.com/video/pD7VE19SOGk/w-d-xo.html

@@TheTapesArchive Your welcome.....For another change in direction from their earlier 70's sound, and into their main 'Bob Calvert' late 70's years , here's their 1977 album (the 1st of a Bob Calvert trilogy whereby his highly visionary poetic lyrics were unleashed.)
