Why don't you bus in protools and send it back through for the analog summing?

My thoughts exactly. Really only limited by the way that he chooses to mix. Modify the workflow for the gear and get great results. In my home studio, I mix through an older 24 channel studio/live type of console with only 16 I/Os and I create busses for what I want in the daw and send things to the board which I use outboard analog gear with and it all sounds great. As for recall, that's perhaps the only reasonable argument against using an old console. I get that one. But a few pics with a phone camera and working on one thing at a time gets around that well enough for me.

Good video thanks! I would like to say though, don't sell yourself short on mixing through that console because you can mix through it. It may take some extra work, but you can use recall sheets to recall your mixes. Recall sheets are what professional studios with old analog consoles use. Think about it, back in the day before the DAW was used, how did they recall their mixes??? Recall Sheets. Some may call it too much extra work, but it is possible.

Very modest and humble home studio, with no console. Some nice mic preamps, a handful of SM57s, couple 609s. Not much. I had to learn how to do it all in software. I basically had to learn everything. EQs, something most people have a natural ability for, needed to be learned. Compression, what its for etc. I didn't know how good audio could be, with compression. Limiters are a blast. Nice to be able to control that transient shape, and hear more of the tail. Learning a LOT from guys like you... so Thank You. Best!

there are so many reasonable ways to make this console work in a hybrid mixing setup...

the 550 or 560 arent inductor based EQ, there may have been and 560 inductor version.
the 1532 EQ is closer to the API then the inductor mod you mention. A lot of guys complain about the 1532 gyrator style EQ but Yamaha explains their theory in the PM2000 console (the 1532 big brother) manual. They were thinking of in live sound you want to cut frequencies to be able to get more signal level, most times there is one frequency that is problematic so there thought was to reduce that Band and then add around it to get a better curve. So they expected you to make Atleast 3 adjustments around the problem band. If you reduce 6dB at say 5k then you would boost the lo mid around 3db at 1k and the High band around 3db, the high band is a shelf at 10k. Or -9db at 5k, +3 at 1k, +3db at 10k and then add 3db at fader. I’ve found switching channels IC2 the toshiba Ta7322 in-line chip for a OPA604 is a good improvement to the EQ and a better driver for the insert.

I think either the inductor mod you are bringing the EQ more online with the vintage spectra Sonics EQ or similar, definitely closer to the Yamaha pm1000 EQ

I love my PM-2000. It sounds great and works for our purposes. I hope you make another video that goes deeper into the Pros rather than the Cons of these boards. There's not a ton of information out there about them. Excellent front end in my humble opinion, like a darker fucked up API.

100% with you on this one! Except for some particular neve console models, I would not trade it for any other console.

I am setting myself up so that I can record each individual channel back to DAW so when the analog mix is done all I have to do is recall the master bus and zero out the console and faders and resum if needed.

It's amazing to mix on especially if you modify the subgroups are come directly out of them instead of the matrix's you have missed the Nugget

I always record through a small console and use the compressor and eq on it.. And later I use it again as a summing mixer by bring out some of instrument busses to the console after editing or after making some adjustments and automation in the box.. Sometimes I use the compressor or eq on my console just a bit (only on stereo bus) before I print back the stereo out to the DAW (or record directly to cassette sometimes)..

Are you going to do the video showing how you did the mods to this desk?

I have an old RM1608 and some DBX 900 stuff. Having spent decades mixing live shows it feels really good to use my hands and sum through it. Use the DAW for things it's good at like fader automation and tape emulation.
But it's even better on the front end.

Interesting route you took on the restoration of this board. I own one of these myself. I picked it up for almost nothing.
It works perfectly still. Not sure what I'm going to do with it.
However, there's something to be said for being limited to channels, and i think it's a good something to be said.
Music has become a joke of untalented BS. When i was active in bands and recordering. The idea was always to capture the best live performance of whichever song we were going for.
That thinking seems to be long gone.
I'm going to have to check out your channel. You seem to be a knowledgeable guy when it comes to this stuff. Very cool video.

What's your studio setup like? Are you using a console for your front end to your DAW, or are yo mixing through a console?

A basic home studio. No console, but some decent outboard gear, Recently discovered/subscribed to your channel. Good stuff!

I know the feeling (but not this board.) but yeah the biggest problem with this board is those faders you cant even move with all your strength

Recall sucks on a console. However my ears love an analog summed mix compared to itb. Something about electronics vs an algorithm.

The vintage analog consoles are probably best used for live performance (albeit big to carry around).
