Wow, I just love seeing the London played by skilled grandmasters. I'll never forget my first time playing the London in my second ever tournament. I was just 8 years old in 1996 and saw huge results from my preparation compared to my opponents. I made it to the semifinal where my opponent played a very unusual and unexpected move in the mid-game. I went into a deep think. Just then 2 young Canadian men burst into the room with a boombox blasting techno and dancing. I was totally thrown off, leading me to blunder. The dark haired one danced up to my opponent, pointed out my blunder and yelled, "We take those!" Several moves later, techno still blasting and my concentration gone, my position was hopeless. The fair-haired Canadian loudly announced the move that would lead to my opponent checkmating me and shouted, "Get 'em outta here!" Needless to say, my opponent played the move and I was forced to resign. Don't support these guys.
Why is Eric’s commentary so damn funny? I love this guy’s sense of humor, I literally could watch him play titled Tuesday for hours and hours on end just because of his dry humor man.
Absolutely loved the discussion of the last two games. All the thinking that happens in a 3-minute blitz game is a real treat to see unpacked. Congrats on the games Eric.
"It should be completely winning but... we have to figure out how I'm gonna choke" Yep that's me in every game. The more I'm winning the worse that feel is. Nice win against Andreikin there.
Nakamura showing his petty, vindictive nature - essentially (half)throwing his final game to stop Eric winning the event, as had Nakamura won, he would have lost on tie-break to Eric - there is your superstar, people!
@@brandonovich6063 In the last round , with Eric having won, with a better position and more time, Nakamura offered Bortnyk a draw, enabling Bortnyk to beat Eric on tiebreak - had Nakamura beaten Bortnyk, he and Eric would have tied first, but Eric would take the title on tiebreak
5:38 Nf6+ Kf8 Nd7+ wins the queen, since R8xd7 Qh8# or R7xd7 Qh8+ Kf7 Rf1+ leads to mate. So black would do Nf6+ Rxf6 Qxf6 instead, which is probably winning. The line from the game seemed super strong too.
At 5:43 isn't that a forced win if black does not take after Nf6+? For example: Nf6+ K on long diagonal loses Queen to Nd7 discovered check. After Nf6+ Kf8 Nd7+!! And if Rdxd7 Qh8# so Rfxd7 Qh8+ Kf7 and Rf1+ Qf2 Rf2#

It's always interesting to me when I see strong players in any sport mentally crack under pressure. Most people do in general. Only a few mentally strong players in each sport don't and they're always the top 2 or 3 people. Eric is a super strong player but mentally, he typically cracks when playing Hikaru. Over the years, I've seen it many times. He'll get the occasional win against him so it's not a total bummer but overall, you can see the mistakes when the pressure is on...even when he has a winning position. It's tough but like Tiger woods once said, "I win because I don't fold under pressure, they do."
I disagree. Hikaru is simply a better player. He is higher rated. I don't think Eric is choking; in the Titled Tuesday tournament, you play better (or worse) players as the tournament proceeds. I imagine Eric is only "choking" at the end of his tournaments because he starts off each Tuesday playing against 2400-rated players and then ends most Tuesdays playing against 2800-3200 rated players (which naturally yields more losses). I imagine the vast majority of Hikaru's Titled Tuesday tournament losses also happen at the very end of the tournament too because he is usually playing his toughest competition in rounds 9-11.
@@RyanBenkeser I totally agree with what you wrote for the most part. However there's no denying having winning positions with a major time advantage and losing isn't defined as choking. One (of many) example is the other day when Eric had a complete winning position against Hikaru and a major time advantage but lost. Hikaru only had a few seconds left and Eric had much more time. It's on Hikaru's channel from a couple of days ago if you want to check it out. The video isn't long and only highlights that game. If that game was a one off, then no big deal, everyone makes mistakes and we move on. But it's not a one off. It has happened many times over. Even in this video Eric acknowledges he "got nervous" after the Hikaru game. I've watched tons of videos of gm's and high ranking players excitedly freak out before the game starts when playing Hikaru, Magnus, Alireza, etc. Their nerves get the best of them many times and they lose before the game even begins. To your point, yes, better players beat lower players but thats normal. It's when lower players lose after winning all game that showcases pressure. It also may be a reason higher players are higher than lower players. Some deal with the pressure better.
2:49 How about your real it in a little bit, that rook position is defended/controlled by blockaded pawn. With literally 0 chances of being undermined. Q f6 was a move I liked but it basically asks for a queen trade so whatever, but I would say it puts pressure on the diagonal. And has relatively high mobility/control.
50:03 Seriously? How long have felt that way lol I really don't know what to say... Maybe you should get like a stress ball to squeeze and throw at the wall. Did I suggest this before lol I see no changes :)
