    With Pete coming back to Japan I hope he will be in another main channel video. He's been a part of the Abroad in Japan universe for so long but has only been in 2 (?) videos. Justice for Pete!

    That first story sounds like Bell’s Palsy. I’ve had it. It goes away on its own after a while and usually doesn’t leave permanent damage. It’s probably a coincidence and nothing to do with the bowling or medication she took.

    • @Drak_Thedp
      @Drak_Thedp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yup, I would agree. Had it after a draft in the car. Got lucky not to get any pain with it tho. It gradually went away after 2 weeks but there's still 1-2mm difference in how wide my eyelids open.

    • @Stephen-up3sd
      @Stephen-up3sd 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Sufferers should get the appropriate steroid medication ASAP - you were lucky - it can leave permanent damage in severe, untreated cases. The symptoms are also very similar to the early stages of a stroke!

    • @Drak_Thedp
      @Drak_Thedp 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, yeah. I have spent a day, I'd say, hoping it'd go away(didn't have pain or any other troubling symptoms), then went to a hospital, where I got my treatment that mainly consisted of niacin shots, hot patches to the neck area and physio. They thought it might'd been a mini-stroke but as I was young and didn't have any other symptoms of a stroke, decided that it was Bell's palsy.

    The Story of the Week's mystery ailment: Bell's Palsy. It is painful facial hemiparesis! It wouldn't turn up on any testing. Thankfully it isn't life threatening

    • @Hairaluia
      @Hairaluia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My first thought, too, and the pain was exacerbated by the stress and uncertainty. I can't believe the "doctor" couldn't diagnose it.
      Fun story: I'm from the US and developed Bell's Palsy when on vacation in New Mexico. Went to an urgent care center, diagnosed immediately, given Prednisone. When I got home I followed up with acupuncture (Chinese medicine) and made a full recovery. It's odd the way this Australian was "treated" in Japan...

    • @Demanufactur3r
      @Demanufactur3r 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Was about to say the same thing. Have had Bell's Palsy once, it didn't hurt but half my face just stopped moving for about a week and a half. It happens randomly, though it could have something to do with nerves going to/from the the brain next to the ear canal. An ear infection could press against those nerves and block the signals. In my case it just disappeared again. I needed to sleep with a protective eye 'cup' as I could'nt move any muscles, including my eyelids. The story from this Mystery does sound much, much more severe.

  • @ohnomayu

    There is a hospital in Omotesando specializing in thyroid care called Ito Hospital. I know they have some of the best doctors there. In Japan, it’s often better to visit specialists. My sister was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism only after seeing five different doctors; it took that long for one of them to identify the issue correctly. It might be helpful to do some online research about symptoms, request specific tests, and discuss these with the doctor, rather than waiting solely for them to find the diagnosis. And for the weekends, just look after hospitals that they have "Emergency" section. Hope this is useful to someone. cheers!

    Japanese health care system is very good if you are part of it, like Chris said. But! Anything that is out of the ordinary and not scheduled i.e. emergencies, aren't really well conducted. I rode more ambulances in Japan than in the rest of my life in my own country, mostly due to horrible migraines, fainting and a bicycle accident. For the first two, they never knew what to do because painkillers in Japan are ridiculously weak compared to what we get in the West, so they would either let me suffer like American Pete, or make things worse. The only time that things went well was with the bicycle accident but that is because it is so common. The regular Dr visits... Depends a lot on the dr, really. Of a dozen or so that I had to see, maybe 2 were as horrible as the experience that Sharla had. I needed surgery, but couldn't afford to fly back home as a student with a scholarship, so I just stuck to the treatment and hoped for the best.

    Of course I cannot KNOW, but the thing is, I DO KNOW that she pinched a nerve. I have two, problem ones, the first in my cervical spine and the second in my thoracic spine.
    The pain stretches out everywhere, making just BREATHING UNBEARABLE that I have to sip breathes just to endure.
    The last time it flared up (was only doing something that would mildly agitate it), I was on the floor for three hours crying like a dying cat, and the crying/wailing made it MUCH worse to boot.
    It took 3 weeks before it finally cleared up (getting better each day thankfully).
    It was so bad that it’s been 3 years since that bad of an attack and my son, who had the great misfortune to be there and witnessed it all. He still asks me to this day to ensure him that I’m not going to almost die again.
    Horrible/NASTY thing pinched nerves are. Sadly there’s no full out cure and she will have it the rest of her life. Hopefully she will learn her limitations (diets can affect it too), and learn to gently stretch before doing strenuous activities like exercise.
    Very sorry to hear about that but I hope this helped somewhat!

    Some years ago, I read about this 20 year old foreign English teacher. That was teaching somewhere in rural Japan. He died of appendicitis, since he diden`t speak any Japanese, And the local doctor, didn`t understand what he was trying to tell him. I know it sounds weird, since when my son got it. The doctor here in Europe, used about a minute, to understand what it was. The story was in all the papers over here, some years ago. And I`ve been wondering about it ever since. Don`t know if any of you, have heard about it?

    I hit my head snowboarding in Rusutsu Hokkaido and had 2 seizures. My wife packed our suitcases and the ambulance people were cool to let us bring our suitcases back to a Sapporo hospital. I had an xray for my hip, xray for my head and spoke to a neurologist. Diagnosed of having a bad concussion, we were not able to get the bill coz it was Sunday, we had to come back the next day. We fully expected it to cost heaps, I called my insurance, raised my credit card credit and was generally shit scared exspecting a huge bill. Next day we went to the hospital and the bill was under 40000Y, about $400 Australian $, which would of been the cost for one xray in Australia. The insurance paid for everything including cost of Ibuprofen/Paracetamol. So I found the hospital care in Japan to be awesome.

    11:00 - What you guys are describing, about Japanese health care, sounds very similar to what my wife and I experienced in Singapore. Not that the health care was particularly bad, but just very very different from what we were used to. More like a collection of clinics than a hospital. My wife had to do a surgery, that ended in the late afternoon. They put her in a bed and gave her some pain pills and a phone number to call if she had issues. Because, apparently, the clinic was closing, and there wqsn't going to be anyone there after 5pm, until they came back the next morning. So, she was completely alone in this clinic recovery room. We later learned of a hospital (Gleneagles) which operates more like an American hospital, and any future medical needs, we went there, and felt much more at ease. I wonder if there are hospitals there, that have a more western approach to health care.

      Singaporean here. We have several public hospitals offering world-class healthcare if you just Google "hospital singapore". Singapore General Hospital, Changi General Hospital, these first few results are the ones. It sounds like you went to a private clinic's website likely because they have a Western name, and then fell into the trap of another larger private clinic. Gleneagles is where the crazy rich asian folk go.

    Wow that’s hard for the couple who had the hospital troubles. Did the patient with the face paralysis get bitten by a tick or go anywhere near deer/wildlife areas.
    Lyme disease or borreliosis is a bacterial spirocete disease you can catch from tick bites.
    It’s hard to get treatment for it unless you live in Nordic countries but you need either antibiotics or antibacterial herbs and hyperthermia treatment. A Brisbane woman made a documentary called ‘Our Battle Ongoing’ and she had sudden face paralysis also from a tick bite.

    Also, I'll keep saying it. Narita isn't that bad, the town of Narita next to the airport is very quiet and charming with a lovely Japanese garden to rest in when you're jetlagged. The airport itself may not be quite as nice but you can get through it ok.

    Bigsby is looking and sounding really good. It seems the years have mellowed him. But, I hate to hear he's still drinking. Bad things happen to people when he picks up the bottle.

    I haven't kept up with anything Jordan Peterson related in years, so I wouldn't characterize myself as a fan, but mocking a recovering addict for their struggle with substance abuse feels like crossing a line to me. Maybe that's just a kind of British humour I don't understand, but that kind of behaviour is extremely disappointing.

      British humor tends to be more "dark", (and this is coming from someone like you, who hasn't kept up anything Peterson in years). The jokes were more on Peterson's self restrictive diet. It just got an eyeroll out of me.
