playing Bass Flute has helped my alto flute a lot like bass/bari sax sopranino/soprano sax It's like working out with a leaded bat and then picking up an unweighted one. You have all this extra power to put toward nuance and execution,
I prefer alto, that's why I go around the internet looking for alto music like this. Alto is just not that in your face, and it has that very interesting, reflexive, mysterious, magical and sophisticated low range
I just discovered this group in a roundabout way: I was listening to Duke Jordan and read that he did an album with you, Yuka. I didn't find the album on TH-cam but did find one song from it and loved your tone. I gather that you, like me, are a classical-trained flutist who took up jazz. You and this entire group are splendid. This is only the second song I've listened to by this group. I'll keep listening to more songs.
As soon as the first flute part came in at 0:21 my head went "jungle book". Haven't seen that movie in decades, I'm guessing there must be an alto flute in the score? 😅 not an instrument you hear very often, what a lovely tone.
Oh, looked it up, it's a bass flute, but I guess the low register alto playing at the beginning there must have hit that same spot to draw out the association
Which model of alto does the guy on the far right play?? I don’t recognise it, the raised right hand keys are throwing me off … Beautiful music also!!! Amazing soulful playing from every single person there :3
I love the sound of the alto flute and have written a piece that uses it prominently. It's called Waltz For Mrs K and is on TH-cam. People say it's 'comforting'.
I adore the rhythm, melody and - most importantly for me - the individual (solo) improvisation. I play C-flute, and am now learning how to manage the G-alto flute - tonal quality and manipulation. Can one suggest a good performer/instructor via a video herein on You Tube? Naturally, I am looking and listening - especially for tone and control of the ALTO FLUTE. Great performance...
Hi Wyndhl, thanks for your kind remarks! I'm the composer, arranger, and one of the performers on this video. If you look around TH-cam you may find some hints on playing alto flute. If you're interested in a Skype lesson let me know here.
Steve Sacks: You're welcome. And, thanks for the suggestion - and offer. Keep the compositions coming. It's a joy to listen, learn, imitate, and then personalized the sound- quality and style - based on one's own prior knowledge and experience. - much respect, Steve!
I play a Miyazawa alto. At least at the time I bought it over 15 years ago, I thought it was probably the best alto flute money could buy, or at least the best I tried, which included a Muramatsu and a Brannen that cost more than twice as much as the Miyazawa, among many others. I'm still a very happy customer today, and consider it the best-made instrument I have (my flute and piccolo are both Hayneses, and the piccolo is particularly excellent - made in 1981 or so; the flute is from 1966, and both have served me well, though I could imagine buying a new flute if I strike it rich someday). Muramatsu definitely makes quality instruments, though.
I hit the like button before any of the alto flutes even started playing
Me too.
Excellent! Truly!
that's so amazing that I don't even know what to say !

Theobald Boehm, the inventor of the metal flute, considered the alto to be his definitive achievement.
Same with viola vs violin

Or the accompaniment?
I want to play it, how I can find the parts of alto flute?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
Amazing playing and arrangements, just curious to know how many flutists play a Muramatsu alto?

Fantastic players. The two soloists are the best I've heard on the instrument. Better than Sam Most, the only guy who specialized in the Alto.
Thank you for your comment! I'll pass your words on to them.
What kind of alto was the Asian man playing ? I’ve never seen one with raised keys in the right hand before.
It's a Kotato.
Nice piece . Piano drowning out everyone though.
Great stuff Steve and all! beautiful alto flute solos!
