- The men's 102kg category at the European Weightlifting Championships 2024 was full of colossal successes and tragic downfalls. Watch as athletes like Samuel Gasparyan, Garik Karapetyan, Yauheni tsikhantsou and others determine the strongest in Europe and battle for improved Olympic ranking spots.

It does seem odd that this class, an Olympic class seems to be slightly underperforming compared to the 73s and 89s. I mean 2 of the 89s would be in the hunt in this class, and this is the only men’s category that hasn’t established any records, the original standards are still the target. Two of the top four finishers here are going to get screwed for Paris. Both Armenians and both Belorussians have totaled 390+. Tsikhantsou is probably safe he’s got 8 kg on his teammate. Sammy Gaspar has 396 and Karapetyan has 394 so whoever is 2nd after Thailand is really getting shafted.
Kinda hard to overperform when the jury is being fucking insane and calling every little thing a no lift. Not to mention the inconsistency between their calls and the judges. They have made it extra difficult to even get a total.

It would be interesting to know what kind of relationship Gasparyan and Karapetyan have. I mean they’re both on the national team and they see each other at training camps all the time if not actually living together at a permanent facility and they are each other’s main opponent in realizing a lifelong dream of competing in the Olympics. It’s not Liu Huanhua or Meso who is the biggest obstacle it’s the guy who they see all the time who speaks their language and who under ordinary circumstances would likely be a friend.

I luv the fuckin guy. Built like a tank aggressive as hell looks like what central casting wants when looking for a weightlifter. Looks like he’s back to his great 2019 form when he was both European and World champ.

These guys need to do better research or stop using fuzzy memories for facts. The Iranian guy Tavakkoli he’s referring to making his international debut at 2000 Olympics and winning was a veteran of at least 4 internationals (Asian Games and Jr worlds between 97 and 2000. I still like your commentary Max but don’t you guys have laptops?

Why an American USA athlete is competing in a european championship?
The American games were held in a Latin American country (don't remember which) that was considered too dangerous to travel to, so the U.S. lifters were allowed to compete in the European games, but their scores are measured against the American lifts (ie, they can't get on the podium here even if they lift the most)

Why is weightlifting federation not allowing Belarus athletes to represent their nations?? Belarus is not conducting any war, and even if it does, weightlifting shouldn't be politicized. Meanwhile, Israel athletes are allowed to carry the Israel flag while Israel is literally killing over 30,000 civilians. What a bunhc of nonsense sham.
among all weight classes i find this one the least performing , 89 men do much more better by heaps
Fatkraken You might say that about all Olympic classes but these guys are outperforming the next heaviest class 109s non Olympic of course.
