    51:35 with Sam's response to the Original Sin and being deserving of Hell comment, "but He made you guys, He made that" and Tanner applying the Kevin test, really resonated. What made me realize how inherently evil the concept of Original Sin is, was when Creationist Ken Ham outright said, "you have committed high treason against the God of the Universe by being born." And I was like, "That's horr-oh...that's actually accurate to Christianity isn't it? The people who hate abortion because the unborn are innocent, are condemning them to the fires of Hell upon birth, for the crime of being born, if we take the Bible at face value on Original Sin. That's f***ing evil."

    As for the "one day I had dysphoria, and then I didn't" thing, in my experience as a trans person, dysphoria is very psychological. I went through a period of time where it appeared to me that my ""brief stint"" with gender dysphoria went away as I went to high school (and, conveniently, when I would be expected to start dating and performing femininity more than I had as a child.) I doubled down on the gender roles because I subconsciously thought that I couldn't live a full life if not, and convinced myself veyr believably that my dysphoria was gone. Eventually, as I moved out of my hometown and met other trans people I learned that no, the dysphoria did not go away- I was just repressing those feelings because they weren't safe. I thankfully was never taught by my religion that being queer was wrong, so I can only imagine how difficult this denial must be for people who regularly get messages about being satanic, not to mention familial rejection and all of that. Sure, some people make mistakes and detransition because they don't feel the need to anymore, or because they've grown in their self image, and I think it's very believable that some of these people may genuinely feel like their dysphoria has gone away, but in my experience, it'll rear its ugly head again in a few years unless they face it.

    Super minor point here but I encourage you to rethink your use of the term judeochristian. It’s a term that was invented to describe Jewish converts to Christianity and maintained largely as a political tool in the United States to lump both groups together. It is especially popular today among conservative Christians who fetishize Judaism. Judaism and Christianity are significantly different religions in philosophy and practice and while not every Jewish person dislikes the term, and indeed it is a term used by some (largely conservative) members of our population, overall it is one that many many Jewish people take issue with.

      @@ZelphOntheShelf oh it’s okay! It really is in wide usage because of its political meaning so I completely understand. While I balk at the idea of some sort of allegiance politically between the two groups (which has consistently been a wildly different voting block for nearly 100 years), the religious grouping is really where the usage is aligned with a lot of bad feelings re attempts to convert and absorb us.

    The difficulty with not viewing the world through a set of preconceived notions is that that's exactly how are brains are set up to function, especially when most people live in communities that share a similar set of preconceptions. Our brains are dealing with so much information about the world around us that it's impossible to process it without categorisation and therefore simplification. That's why the metaphor of a spectrum can be so useful - it allows our brains to categorise into lots of smaller boxes instead of just two extremes. Idk, just rambling, but I think it's important to bear this in mind so we don't just replace one set of preconceptions with another, both equally simplistic if not equally harmful.

    I bought a book last year, "Call Sign Kluso", by Rick Tollini. Tollini is a retired USAF fighter pilot, he was one of the best, and shot down an Iraqi MiG-25 during Operation Desert Storm. Anyway, his career did not finish up in a great way, and then Tollini decided to honor a commitment he made to his wife, a Japanese woman, and studied Buddhism.
    Tollini found peace with himself and with his actions through Buddhism. As I told my friend, I'm not interested in being Buddhist, but seeing this stone killer fighter pilot learn empathy and finding peace through it is inspiring and about the last thing I expected to find in this book.

    I've been playing trumpet (technically cornet but same thing kinda) since I was in high school, so like 2012-ish. Not professionally but I've been in plenty of ensembles. The "spit" isn't so much spit as it is condensation. When you're done playing, just get an old rag and ball it up on the spit valve, open the valve and face the trumpet so the valve is the lowest point on that part of tubing, and just blow all that junk out! The spit valve on the third button slide won't need to be cleaned out as often as the other! And now, you've got yourself a designated "spit" rag lol keep practicing, Sam!! Excited for you!!

  • @Nicole-zr1me
    @Nicole-zr1me ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Speaking to Sam talking about her pepperspray:
    I have ptsd from a home invasion. Something fascinating ptsd has taught me, is that when people with ptsd do hypervigilant things to avoid feeling unsafe (like for me double checking my windows to make sure they’re locked), they’re actually reinforcing the belief that something bad will happen again.
    So while I still do many of those things, I’m slowly training myself to stop reinforcing the belief that someone will attack me.
    Not sure if any of that made sense. And not saying that taking precautions to protect yourself is bad in any way. Just thinks it’s fascinating how our brains work.

    In (Catholic) prep school back in the 90s, we read a book by an Asian American author that described a “sitting ghost”. Though I didn’t know it at the time, the author was describing a sleep paralysis episode. Apparently in her culture, it was seen as a ghost that sat on your chest holding you down. When I was 14, I got my wisdom teeth out. That night, I had a sleep paralysis episode for the first time. When it stopped, I ran up to my parents bedroom, jumped into bed with them, and described what had happened, and told them that I felt a demon or evil ghost in my room. I had never heard of sleep paralysis before, only the “sitting ghost“. Because of Catholic indoctrination, I was absolutely terrified of demons. THANK GOODNESS I had down to earth, intelligent parents who managed to convince me that it wasn’t a ghost or demon, I was just on heavy pain medication for the first time in my life and it was messing with my brain. It calmed me down, but I didn’t FULLY believe it wasn’t a demon until years later when I learned about sleep paralysis and night terrors. I often think about this, and how absolutely grateful I am to my parents… Had they been hard-core Catholics they probably would’ve believed it was a demon and God knows what that would’ve done to my psyche! Instead, they gave me a perfect example of how your brain can trick you. This lesson was one of the most valuable to my deconstruction.

    Around 49:55 I think there was validity to the comment about the fact that you can question if you have a soul is evidence that you do have a soul. I see that as very similar to “I think, therefore I am.” It definitely depends on your definition of a soul though!

      yeah definitely depends on the definition of soul. assuming in the premise what you hope to confirm in the conclusion would be fallacious reasoning, e.g. the assumption that a being has to have an unobservable and untestable spirit that exists independent of the body in order to think about it’s own nature.

    That first one.... like yes we need to listen to de-transitions and make then feel safe and comfortable.... but, like Sam says, they censort themselves and just call it "sin," it just sounds like another Christan talking about "swearing in front of mom." At best this person doesn't want to talk about their experiences and just want to bere their witness, at worst .... I think this person could be lying or misunderstandings what it to be trans.
    These people might be genderfluid/non binary/etc. They're identity could be fluctuating. I wonder how far they got into their "transition." I doubt these guys got hormones, and surgeries. Maybe they were just experimenting with their identity. They didn't give any details, and since they are so adamant against it these details would help their argument a lot. 🤷‍♀️ funny how trans people need to do everything to justify their existence and yet any ex LGBT person can be 0 detail and be "proof this is a phase."

    • @ponykazy3725
      @ponykazy3725 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I listened to it again, and I feel like I was too harsh.... but I stand by what I said. This person is feeling tremendous amount of guilt and shame, and probably dont feel like they fit in the role AFABs are forced into in church environments.
      They're feelings of being trans or "not a woman" are valid, and should be addressed! Cis or not, people should feel comfortably in their gender. I really do hope this point finds a space in the Christan community that will help them feel safe, accepted, and loved for who they are. No pressure on gender roles, no feelings of being less than... it's sad how that is not asking for much, and yet I think it would be difficult to find.
      (Hah they say LGBT people care about gender and junk too much. Meanwhile junk/gender dictates what roles people can/cant do in churches all over the world)

    As a Christian I have ALWAYS struggled with the idea of hell. The older I get though the more I believe in just a higher being. Wether that's the god I was taught about growing up or another god or entity, I'm not sure. I just struggle with the idea that this being is "so loving" yet his followers are so hateful. How does that even work?

    • @rosevela2316

      I also have always been deeply troubled by the idea of Hell! But recently I have come across videos on youtube and podcast that talks about different views of hell and different interpretations of what the Bible actually says! And if those are correct, most Christians may have a completely wrong view of hell! That it isn't actually an eternal place. Here is the most recent video I have watched about this subject in case you are curious: th-cam.com/video/u4_kCteLMFk/w-d-xo.html

    I think the Olsen twins do fashion design now? Using my Google skills, they've had a few lines here and there and appeared at the last fashion week, apparently. Also, Mary-Kate was married to a much older French banker (half-bro of former French president, Nicolas Sarkozy) for a few years until 2021-LOL, yikes!-and Ashley married last year to a more appropriately-aged normie-looking artist. Honestly, considering how exploited and overexposed they were as kids and younger adults, I'm glad they get to have more quiet lives now.
    I would rather be friendless than have a "friend" trying to shove their religion down my throat. If you've gone 30 years without feeling that "absence" then why create one instead of finding something truly fulfilling? Moreover, I had an acquaintance in my teens who wanted a sex dream starring Britney Spears so badly, he thought of nothing but her for, like, three days. Surprise! He dreamt about her. I can't remember if the sex part happened or not, but there she was!

    I've never understood how the theology of Satan even squares with a loving, omniscient, omnipresent, monotheistic God. Like, the idea that Satan is just as powerful force as God is not monotheism. I never bought the argument that we needed Satan to prove worthiness for heaven. Like....this omniscient God could do whatever he wants.

    42:33 This reminds me so much of this comment I saw on a video of a brilliant child asking questions of Neil deGrasse Tyson- the comment by @kevjd24 said:
    “This reminded me of when I introduced my students to the Trolley Problem. The kids (ages 10-12) kept offering workarounds. They wanted to attempt to stop it manually, crash cars into the trolley, knock it off the tracks, etc. They simply refused to accept the outcome, even though they understood the guidelines. It was remarkable, watching them relentlessly attempt creative solutions outside the guidelines of the thought experiment. When I introduced this to a number of adults who had not heard of it, they all gave straight forward answers of sacrifice with no thoughts to a workaround. Even though the adults followed the guidelines, it was chilling to see how willing they were to sacrifice a life after watching a group of kids endlessly search for a way, even though it appeared to be hopeless.

    that first story made me feel so sick and upset :( i think maybe because i could see an alternate version of myself in them. when i came out as trans i thought my catholic school & family responded fine, but looking back now i can see they were doing the bare minimum and were quietly trying to detransition me. i was extremely stubborn though so i made it through, but i know that if i had been more scared i would end up like them. i hope they wake up to themselves when they're ready.

    Aldous Huxley's Perennial philosophy does a great job of reframing a lot of Jesus' sayings and comparing them to other spiritual teachers from around the world. It was pretty eye opening since I've generally read the Bible in the context of American Christianity ©️

    For the trumpet - it's actually not spit, it's condensation. The water vapor you breathe out condenses in the cold metal tubes and that's what comes out of the so-called "spit valve" (I play trumpet and yes, I call it the spit valve too, but I had a friend who played tuba professionally and he would get annoyed with me for calling it that because it's not spit)

    I do appreciate the perspective you both offer, but you do seem to have an understanding of Christian traditions that’s limited to more conservative fundamentalist beliefs. Thats totally understandable given both of your personal stories, but there’s a lot of other corners of Christianity with very different teachings. You seem to really paint it all with broad brushes that aren’t necessarily always productive. Definitely these Reddit posts are from more conservative spaces, because I am a born and raised Christian who does not believe in Hell, nor was I ever taught to believe in it. Would recommend checking out the writings of Nadia Bolz Webber or the TH-cam channel of God is Grey if you wanted to explore more progressive/leftist Christian traditions
