- I am slowly but surely making my way through the whole Megami Tensei Series with Reviews on the channel! I am currently playing through Strange Journey Redux and will definitely review it afterwards. Meanwhile, here's my review of Digital Devil Saga.

I dont get why this game went so under the radar even compared to other megaten titles, DDS is very accessible from a gameplay perspective along with being very atmospheric and cinematic at points. Was it all the bleak greys? idk, I hope it gets the remaster it deserves

Digital Devil Saga never went under the radar. Before the release of SMT IV, the first game was the second most played non-Persona MegaTen game next to SMT Nocturne. The reason people didn't talk about it wasn't because it went under the radar. It's because Digital Devil Saga is the Final Fantasy XII of MegaTen.
I rage quit for a few times in Digital Devil Saga admittedly, because of how often I had to face the demons. But the game is fairly challenging and the story is the reason I kept playing. If they are ever gonna do a remaster of DDS games, then I'm up for it.

Yeah it's a bit painful to play tbh. I rage quit after 15 hours. The trap Maze was getting to me and no demon fusion makes it hard to get through. I picked it back up recently and I'll try to slog through it again because it's a decent game.
@@Bradley_Lutethe game has alot of ways to make itself easier for you, Combo Spells for example allow you to use more powerful shit earlier in the game that you'll get access to later, alot of grinding is alievated by certain Abilties you can equip to each character to not only double the amount of points you gain towards using for the mantra grid but also speeds up gameplay alot.
I found this game from some game store in my country and I'm very happy because it's really rare to see a smt game here
Nice man! Same with where I live, even the new games from Atlus they are rare on launch day.. Like 13Sentinels my local store had only 3 copies including minr at launch

I've been considering playing both via PCSX2 at some point, but I'm already in the middle of Nocturne (Hardtype, at that) and planning to resume _Persona 5 Royal_ when I'm (nearly?) done with that.

I believe they don't get enough credit. I played both on ps2 back in the day. Finished 1 and played 2 right after. Love them to death

DDS always seemed interesting to me, especially the mantra system since it's essentially a skill tree it looks like, and I just bought 1 and 2 on Amazon. I still need to play through Nocturne which I want to do first but those two will definitely be next!

Man, I appreciate that you talked about the OST a bit. But i feel sometimes like I'm the only one who was just stunned off the bat as soon as I heard the homebase Muladhara theme. That prticular track is so beautifully composed. youre right though, these games dont get enough love.
That nocturne engine is amazing for the ambiance it creates

The naming of the games is a huge point why people in the west do not touch them. If you look up all SMT games released in the west, you get confused what the differences are between Devil Saga, Summoner, Survivor. Many re-releases, different versions, different platforms (tv and portable) and so on. It seems normal for hardcore fans like us, but tell a friend who is not so much into gaming about those games and watch their face.
I would play this again it definitely deserves a remaster but sadly it doesn't seem anywhere near happening so i would just hop back on my ps2 and play this masterpiece once again.
I agree, I was hoping after the Nocturne HD remaster then the DDS games would be next.
Game is awesome its even very good that this time I feel like I am the demon myself and in my opinion this game is in top 5 jrpg on ps2

The Mantra system makes me think of the Job system from Final Fantasy.
Definitely going to get it, you sold me on it. I read a review not to long ago and all they seemed to whine about was the encounter rate but didn't explain too much about the differences in the game compared to other smt ips. I think I'll get it digitally on ps3, avoiding nocturne till it's hd remaster drops, voice acting will make the game even better!
The encounter rate really isnt that bad, and the combat system is awesome anyways! Hope you enjoy it!

I only played DDS2 and Nocturne and i fucking love these games to death way better the the FF series imo.

I love both series. I don't think MegaTen is better though. Maybe Final Fantasy is marginally better. Both great and very different.

DDS1/2 is the most underrated game (singular because you really gotta play them both....) i have ever fucking played. hell id even consider these even better then nocturne. and that is a BIG statement.
not to mention, and i know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for even saying this but you have this title to thank for persona 3...... hear me out, the influence persona 3 took from this game is actually very VERY obvious to me. more particularly the second game though, its far more character/story driven then nocturne ever was which paved the way for persona 3. no Slinks/dating sim elements obviously but the character driven nature of it all is very obviously persona-esque. not to mention it has some serious fucking TWISTS. especially in the second game. not gonna spoilers anything but you CANNOT tell me that the later parts of the second game are not persona-esque to the freaking core. it is fucking CRIMINAL how under-appreciated this game is
and the OST.... holy fuck the OST. it has GOT to be some of if not THE best work shoji has ever done. stupidly and criminally underrated addition to smt. i will NEVER understand why this isn't ahead of nocturne in popularity.

I love both these games, really deserve HD remasters if not just ports to all current systems.
You have a strange cadence when reading that makes the flow feel very choppy, I would suggest exercises for reading aloud.
I would sell my soul for dds ports/remakes or remasters dont care which I just need them but nice review! I think you could have done a tiny bit more research one thing that stuck out to me was the lack of atma mentioned atma is what you have to grid for to gain new mantras you gain atma by devouring your enemies but other than that really enjoyed your video! :3

Thanks! For me, I buy all my retro stuff at my local retro game store. For games, I also look on ebay, but I wouldn't suggest it for consoles! Maybe try FB Marketplace or Craiglist!

I played this for almost 30 hours but then just never ended up returning to it. I don't remember enough about it to pick it up again now, so I should just start over, but I just don't feel like playing on PS2 with my HDTV, all PS2 games look like garbage on it. I really wish Atlus remasters and rereleases these on Steam after Nocturne.

I think both them are great games and deserve better then just being on PS2/3.
The encounter rate in this is worse than Nocturne...seems like a good game though, but man it is grindy to get the skill you want unlike Nocturne where you fuse a demon and bam you get the skill.
It's not actually grindy tho? Sure to get the later skills maybe but by that point you can easily invest in skills that actively make it take WAY less time not just that but the game is heavily focused around using Weaknesses and using spells to counter your own and such to push past enemies that grinding is really stupid tbh, if your grinding early to mid game your doing something wrong

Yeah, I really wish it was on PS4/5, Switch, X-Box, etc. especially as a HD remaster.
