Joanna Gaines gets a bad rap because of the fact she basically invented the modern farmhouse aesthetic that feels way overdone at this point but that’s what she was doing ten years ago. Her style has definitely evolved!
I agree, we act like designers can’t change their style just like us. The fact is that she made a huge influence with the modern farm house style….try doing that? Not easy
The whole reason that style caught on so much was because it felt fresh yet classic, and because it was very functional. Obviously like anything that becomes immensely popular it becomes played out eventually and people get sick of it. Joanna was always a talented interior designer imo.

It’ll be interesting to see what they get. Apparently Chip & Joanna bought this house for $425k, possibly less, restored, and then flipped it. While the neighborhood is considered exclusive, I also read that most residents have moderate incomes. That, coupled with the odd location (though it seems price includes the commercial lot behind house) makes me think they won’t get ultra top dollar. Maybe 1.6? I could be wrong, but a very similar castle by me, with 10br & baths, sold for $200k. If there’s not enough happening with the local economy, it might not command a really high price. But I’m really curious what they got! There’s money flying around throughout the US. Would love to see your lighting choices. I bought a vintage light for my foyer and it was pretty expensive. You can see Joanna’s style start to pivot in the later seasons of fixer upper. I bet her shiplap days dragged on way too long because of their customer base in TX and how popular it became with the show. Her cooking show on magnolia network shows her current kitchen and its a lovely and practical kitchen with a European feel to it.

It’s smart business, but that just makes the aesthetic feel all the more soulless.

There books are really good to be honest, it has made me like them as real people so much more. Chip talks a lot about fixer upper and how they controlled a lot of what they did and it was hard for them. They got to a point where they had to set boundaries and eventually that lead to their own network where they can control the rules.

Yup, like shabby chic before farmhouse. 15 years ago I couldn't buy a white table, so I painted, sanded and my cousin was asking me if I'm going to replace that table 😅. Now she has that style, unfortunately from Hobby Lobby. I move from it a few years ago. I always hated trends.
I grew up in the old money parts of Stockholm and had friends who lived in places like this. Very typical dwelling for the cultured upper class and nobility around here. Just utterly gorgeous, somehow understated and super lavish at the same time. It looks Scandinavian (but not in the typical sense with the fair woods and minimalism). Watching the video, I was thinking of Northern European the entire time, and felt very validated when you pointed it out! Love from the greatest city on Earth.
I think the difference is this home was so much older and grand in comparison to the flip homes she does for clients (on a much smaller budget). Also she was smart in maintaining the original integrity of the castle like home, because the buyer for a home like this will never scoff at the money that went into it for rejuvenation. I agreed with the light fixture choices, I think I would have tried to source "modern feeling" light fixtures that were vintage. The fireplace in the dining room absolutely stunning.
I watched the series and I enjoyed it. My favorite room in the whole castle is the atrium. I loved the paint colors as well. It’s an interesting home and I thought the outside was very unsightly until they restored it. They did a great job considering. I’m interested to see who buys it.
I just refreshed my homepaige and you popped up right away... sorry not sorry for the pun, it was too low hanging :D I would love more propstyling videos and hearing the thought process. Love anything you post!
I think this house is stunning. I watched the entire episode. Though the decor is being criticized in this video, the whole point of the paint colors AND the staged decor was in keeping with what the house would look like, periodically speaking back in the time when the castle/house was first built. Personally, I thought the entire house with the restorations was stunning. Saw nothing to criticize.
Paige! This is my problem. I love MCM and I love the old-world, historic house that have crumbling fireplaces or victorian/European touches. How do i marry this in my life and home style?! Currently house hunting too so which style to seek out... Hmmm.
I really love it. I think also that there's something to be said for the "mass appeal" of Magnolia Fixer Upper. That show is still so much better than a lot of previous home improvement shows. And in this castle addition Chip and Joanna had more flexibility to do what they wanted.
I really like it! I wouldn't say it's groundbreaking or anything but at least there is some color! Definitely my favorite thing those two have ever done by a mile
Chateau DIY !!! Love it. Though they do have some awful, rich Brits buying 19th century chateau and turning it to plastic medieval Disneyland. Most others are quite good.
"not every house needs shiplap" is an understatement par excellence! Also, where I live there are lots of homes restored vs Magnoliaed and it makes me happy. A castle is not a place I can afford to buy, nor could I afford the upkeep, but it makes a nice museum.
I don't think it feels European but it certainly feels American arts and crafts which obvs thats what it is but thats such a good thing that they left it what it is rather than changing it. It's really beautiful!!!
It’s beautiful! Joanna is definitely coming out of the modern farmhouse craze. But you know, something doesn’t have to be your taste to be beautiful. 🥰 They’re a beautiful family. ❤
Hi, thanks for reviewing this beautiful home. I think it would be ideal for a Baylor sorority. Anyway, here are a few hints for you. 1. The "heater things" are called radiators. I'm surprised they didn't fabricate covers for them because they can burn you. 2. The wood throughout is quarter-sawn oak, not walnut. Note the heavy veining. Very much used in the 1910s through 20s for bungalows and probably locally sourced. 3. You were right about the limestone. Classic and probably from a local quarry. 4. The wallpapers are also period, reproductions from Bradford & Bradford most often used in bungalows. 5. She probably got the lighting free! Period lighting is $$$! Keep up the great work. Love your channel. 😊
many of the new light fixtures were horrible. why cut corners there. at least she broke away from farmhouse. hopefully someone will be able to keep it up so it doesn’t fall to ruin again.
I had forgotten about the Swiss Army Knife, what a classic and good on you Paige for bringing it back. Weird living in a castle in a parking lot or whatever. Is there a market for that? Novelty value I guess.
Wow! That is a beautiful home! I’m so glad to see that they kept the original details but I agree with you about the lighting. It would have been nice to see period lighting in more areas. The original lighting that they kept looks so amazing. I love mid century modern but I would be very comfortable and happy in that home.
Loved it, loved your commentary but I feel like the spell would be broken as soon as you step outside and see Smalltown America. Regarding the possibility of your adding Wednesday posts - yay! I'd love to see you do a series on how to style a tabletop, shelf, or deep windowsill several different ways using large collection of interesting odds and ends. I'd watch the hell out of that.
The light fixtures are Hudson Valley Lighting. The one in the foyer I actually had in my previous house. I assume they're using the real thing, which HVL would have probably comped. That bubble lights fixture on the main floor is an unfortunate choice because it is *EVERYWHERE* at the moment and will mark the house as 2023 but someone could always change it. The arts & crafts wallpaper is by William Morris. The wallpaper on one of the ceilings looks to me like Anagypta. I assume that, laws permitting, whoever buys it will make it an AirBB because the way you described the area, who would want to live there anyway?
It looks like the red tile in the back kitchen with the pink fireplace matches that tile and paint in the girls room. That's a nice touch. beautiful over all.
We don't do eight fireplaces anymore because they invented central heating. I like how in the shots of the castle, you don't see where it is, or a car dealership, etc. Pretty deceptive.
Wow. Gorgeous home. I agree with you about the light fixtures, most are awful. But Joanna did an amazing job on this charming castle. I’m pleasantly surprised. 😊
Nice job. Though to be truly European, there would have been a few more bold colour choices on the walls. Everything felt very safe. But maybe because they knew they were going to auction it. But defo need a pop of something other than grey and green IMO. Nice video, Paige! We are blocked from Magnolia site in UK for some reason so I had no idea they were working on this. Would love an update on the hotel they bought!
I think if she would have went with ornate, vintage lighting it would have been overkill. We're not in 1922 anymore, the modern lighting brings this castle to present day yet somehow preserves the age. I absolutely love what they did with this entire project. Whether she's your style or not, Joanna is a magician. I don't understand the "anti-Magnolia" train. Her line at Target is reasonably priced and allows people to bring in vintage themes to cookie cutter homes. Not everyone has the time to live in an unfurnished home for months while trying to find "the perfect vintage coffee table". She managed to take one name and completely transform a small town in Texas. An unproblematic queen, we love to see it.
Ha! I carry the Victorinox Huntsman classic in my bag too, it was a present from my Dad, I love it. This 'castle' is super cute although the location looks disappointing. Come to Britain and see some real ones!! 🏰
Please make a video on light fixtures that you like! That is where I struggle the most and I feel like I can never find anything that I actually want to buy- it's been two years and we still have all of the light fixture that were in our home when we bought it and let me tell you they are not good.
As a Texan.. my guess is the pink fireplace is local granite. It's the same color granite as the state capitol in Austin so changing that will go against being Texan lol.
Joanna has a nice range. I really enjoy looking through her book at the different styles. It actually helped me understand that modern farmhouse was not my style.
I'll concede that it's a more thoughtful renovation than I expected, but I'm certainly not wowed. I'm hoping they kept all the original light fixtures that remained and didn't actually remove any original period fixtures for that crap she put up. Dear Lord, they're all ghastly IMHO. I would love to have seen this home renovated by Heidi Caillier or Frances Merrill. And I think it's criminal that she removed the original green tile in the basement room with the dark wood paneling. She bugs me.
I found myself (grudgingly 😏), impressed. And nodding a lot. So yeah. Liked it a lot...but I'd also turf most of the lights. My favourite spot was that awesome bath/shower! 10/10
That wallpaper in the dining room is a William Morris reproduction and completely in line with the craftsman sensibility. Dunno what your issue with it would be.
She did a great job. Light fixtures are hard when you are trying to get it all together all at once. I still change mine out as I find "the one". I am lucky though. My husband is an electrician.
Is this Joanna's way of moving away from all the HGTV-ness of contemporary home decor that's finally getting all of that backlash? Nicole Curtis had it right! I wish her show would come back.
Thank you for the video! I think that it would be very interesting to see what lighting fixtures you suggest instead of that ones. I personally would love to see your taste more, the fact that some pieces are not good doesn’t create a full picture to me.
When we purchased our 100 year old California Tudor in the Pasadena area, all the original glass and porcelain door knobs survived. When we renovated, we relocated the laundry room from the basement to the 2nd floor. Made life so much easier.
I just binged this yesterday and agree with everything you said. The new owners must plant a buttload of trees on the back of the property to block out the industrial park and traffic noise. I'm now gonna go find that Mattport rendering!!! Great video!
Victorinox Swiss Army Knife! Yesss....you're a girl after my own heart. We give these to our grandkids. I really loved the tour of the Castle House. It's beautiful, but I really didn't like the brass lighting. Thanks for sharing this one.
They really did do a great job! I love that they kept so much of the original woodwork, etc. I agreed with just about everything you said. Some of the lighting choices weren’t so fantastic but still, it all turned out beautiful! I love it!
Stunning! I think we probably won’t see the action price until the money changes hands. It would be really awkward if the potential buyer had some sort of problem with financing and they had to go to another bidder. Sometime when you are back in Chicago, visit the Charles Gates Dawes House in Evanston. It’s a gigantic house from this era that houses the Evanston Historical Society. I think you’d love all the original woodwork and finishings.
Not surprising Joanna didn't go too 'modern farmhouse' as it is a trend that is passing. She was spot on with what is beginning to trend now in this renovation.
@@ArtistInNewHampshire I was going to make the same point. Socks on wood are a recipe for disaster. An Oriental runner would look beautiful with the dark wood. On a side note, can I please make one tiny personal suggestion? I enjoy you and Caroline Winkler very much and watch your videos every week. But you both have to find a way to stop constantly touching your hair. It is so distracting. I can think of two or three hairstyles that would look beautiful on you that would not require repeated tucking.

Do you mind me asking what the area of Stockholm? Sounds lovely!
I fell asleep with TH-cam auto-play on and now my feed is full of this content, but I’m here for it.
“Babe, will you pass me the hammer? . . . Baby . . . Baby, pass me the hammer.” You’re *killing* me. 😂😂😂😂
Jealous much
@@ZMS777: Of what? 😂
Wow I was flabbergasted to see Paige saying anything positive about the Gaines in the thumbnail🤣🤣
Thanks for the tour of The Cottonland mansion ... gorgeous remodel! 🏰
Downside of laundry on the top floor is if there's ever a leak, it can be catastrophic for the entire house. Super convenient though!
Agree. Extremely well done!
I do agree that the light fixtures, were not of the right time
Paige! This is my problem. I love MCM and I love the old-world, historic house that have crumbling fireplaces or victorian/European touches. How do i marry this in my life and home style?! Currently house hunting too so which style to seek out... Hmmm.
Really love going through the house with you AND also love your cool design classic sponsor.....the Swiss Army Knife. What a breath of fresh air !
Paige have yellow ever watched the British series Escape to the Chateau? I would love to hear your take on it.
Chateau DIY !!! Love it. Though they do have some awful, rich Brits buying 19th century chateau and turning it to plastic medieval Disneyland. Most others are quite good.
I felt good about this project too. It was an interesting video. thank you!
I agree with you about the light fixtures.
I was surprised too that she didn't know what radiators were, especially for someone who espouses vintage style.
I swear I did know! Hahahha I’m just bad on the spot and try to have minimal edits
thanks for sharing those details!
many of the new light fixtures were horrible. why cut corners there. at least she broke away from farmhouse. hopefully someone will be able to
keep it up so it doesn’t fall to ruin again.
@@Lizlizlizlizlizlizlizlizzie yes it's Strawberry Thief.
I had forgotten about the Swiss Army Knife, what a classic and good on you Paige for bringing it back. Weird living in a castle in a parking lot or whatever. Is there a market for that? Novelty value I guess.
Just found mine the other day….nice surprise find.
PLEASE DO MORE REVIEWS!!!! HOME WORTHY HAS PLENTY OF CONTENT TO PICK FROM!!!! Love these kinds of videos!
I wonder why there is nothing up at any of the windows?
She did a great job. I love it.
I watched this whole series and missed the finale. Thanks, Babe. lol
It is so hard to find light fixtures. I am trying to change mine. I wish you would tell us what you would have put there instead.
Why is the basement tile grout not dark to match the tile?! That would have been so castle / flagstone
And very large pieces.
NEW PAIGE VIDEO 🚨🚨🚨
I agree it’s her best makeover! The fireplaces are beautiful! Great critique.
Yessss I agree the light fixtures are such a downgrade and missed opportunity. All the dark wood is my absolute dream. Paige’s opinions are so good. ❤
It looks like the red tile in the back kitchen with the pink fireplace matches that tile and paint in the girls room. That's a nice touch. beautiful over all.
I loved it, even some of the light fixtures. So glad they kept so many original details, too bad the green tiles of the basement didn’t survived.
I understand your point, but I don’t believe they were going for “truly European“. This place is in Waco, Texas, for goodness sake!
There were no bold colors in the old Spencer estate that I housesat in England.
*Excellent review chicka baby!*
No it's too yellowy which is dying as a trend, so in a year it'll be obnoxious. Darker, understated would've been better.
you dont need to live in a empty home, waiting for the perfect table. you can always pick and choose placeholders...
Ha! I carry the Victorinox Huntsman classic in my bag too, it was a present from my Dad, I love it.
This 'castle' is super cute although the location looks disappointing. Come to Britain and see some real ones!! 🏰
The "general" wallpaper in the dining room is actually William Morris.
yes yes but it felt like Target replicas
@@wasselpa OK, fair. They could have gone a little more out of the box...
Please make a video on light fixtures that you like! That is where I struggle the most and I feel like I can never find anything that I actually want to buy- it's been two years and we still have all of the light fixture that were in our home when we bought it and let me tell you they are not good.
more video's please!! learning ALOT
Yes, they did a great job
I NEEED answers about the marble pillars in the entry though??? Like where they original? Why where the nixed?
I think the florals are setting the tone for it to be a wedding venue👀
She does shoots for the covers of their magazine so they probably staged it for that. That juxtaposition is a pretty common photoshoot model.
As a Texan.. my guess is the pink fireplace is local granite. It's the same color granite as the state capitol in Austin so changing that will go against being Texan lol.
Am I the only one reminded of a Chicago two flat by the front of the castle?
What is a mushroom color? Given that mushrooms 🍄 come in a variety of colors.
Where can you watch this?
That wallpaper in the dining room is a William Morris reproduction and completely in line with the craftsman sensibility. Dunno what your issue with it would be.
The first kitchen’s oven nook is gorgeous, I literally gasped.
Yes she could insert pictures of what looks she prefers so we know WHY she doesn't like a look.
A beautiful restoration.
I love love this castle . I love history ♥️
Yes I would build a nice forest in the back and a tall fence around it.
Please do a video on the type of lighting and light fixtures you like!
They did a fabulous job. I would LOVE that house in my neighborhood
I see no issue with babe or baby. It's cute and I love seeing people in love :)
Could you please do a video showing us some of your recent prop styling / interior work? And talk us through your process? ❤
Victorinox Swiss Army Knife! Yesss....you're a girl after my own heart. We give these to our grandkids.
I really loved the tour of the Castle House. It's beautiful, but I really didn't like the brass lighting. Thanks for sharing this one.
The pink granite is locally sourced - it’s very common to see in old Texas houses. I love it!
They did an amazing job!
Thanks for sharing this.
23:30 yesssss so ready for this.
can you give us the link for the 3d walk through??
They really did do a great job! I love that they kept so much of the original woodwork, etc.
I agreed with just about everything you said. Some of the lighting choices weren’t so fantastic but still, it all turned out beautiful! I love it!
I really like your channel Paige. I’m so tired of being presented with impossible goals.
They should have done a matte flat Spanish tile in the basement !
Page getting lost in the house was so hilarious. I feel like a red solo cup was missing from that scene though.
Nope -- no upstairs laundry!!!! Flood/ leak is catastrophic
Not surprising Joanna didn't go too 'modern farmhouse' as it is a trend that is passing. She was spot on with what is beginning to trend now in this renovation.
Please no carpet on stairs, does no one realize what a royal pain it is to vacuum carpeted stairs!
Ask any ER doctor what percentage of stairway falls are on nice shiny wooden stairs.
Babe, the kind of people to afford this home can outsource that chore
Bare wood stairs are very loud. But more importantly, they are very slippery, no matter what your age. Beautiful carpet runners would be best.
Everyone knows. Everyone has their reasons is better and safer for them to do carpet.
I agree with everything you said! Dying for you to critique Jean Stoffer Designs
