    I’ve been slowly using your lessons over the last 4 years. I perfected the techniques before moving on. This year skied some blacks and actually hit some of these smaller jumps today at Keystone, CO. I’ve exceeded all my goals this year! Thank you so much for the confidence to do so!

    I spent 1 day last year in it's entirety in the Snow Park due to very poor snow conditions. You're completely right about starting off small, getting the hang of what it feels like to be in the air, and increase the jump size as your confidence increases. By the end of the day I was on the biggest jumps in the park, and at the start of the day none of us would have even considered attempting them, building up was key! Also worth noting falling over a few times comes as part of the package, always just laugh it off!

If you're teaching others our Apps also have split-screen analysis which is super helpful. Brilliant! (I love that expression even though I'm from USA.) This is a perfect intro, but I'd love to see more. Spread eagle and daffy seem like naturals. This year I want to tackle a helicopter finally and yes, at my age! I'd also like to feel more comfortable dropping in from 10 ft (3 meters) to 20 feet (6 meters). Again, beautifully done - nice, clear skiing, clear and to the point instruction, excellent video work.

    I like how on a previous video someone was lauding this excellent skier for not being a wimp and skiing without a helmet. But here we are, and he's now wearing a helmet. It's your choice. Skiing is a dangerous sport. Wear one if you want to or not. I love skiing but I always wear a helmet. I have a brother that got a concussion when skiing once and he was wearing a helmet and the helmet broke on impact. But I don't think anybody should be required to wear one. Do want you want. That's the libertarian way!

    Something I need to spend time learning as I learnt to my cost last week when I went over an artificial (snow machine) blown ridge at speed which wasn't there any other day I had come down the run, messed up the landing and knocked myself unconscious for 3 minutes. Had to be helicopter lifted off and spent 24 hours in hospital. Next time, I am going to learn how to do this properly, with instruction.

    Very good series and I have found some helpful things. On thing that seems to be missing though, and I hope this isn't nitpicking, is/are comments on the types of mistakes beginning and intermediate or even skiers who are looking to make the jump to advanced skiers make. Maybe the instructor has been a good skier for so long he forgot or maybe (and more likely) to go into some of these things would make the series too long! If that's the case, I get it.
    For example, there wasn't much discussion of the reasons most beginning skiers fall such as crossing ski tips, etc. In the jump up to skiing crud many yard sales are had by "catching an edge" on one ski and the other not being adjusted quickly enough, or dipping the tips in powder, and many other common problems.
    Just some comment on how best to keep your tips up and skis parallel over rough terrain would be helpful, its not obvious to anyone without a lot of lessons or who wasn't on a ski team, etc. The skis don't always just dig through variable snow when you're learning that terrain. Many minute adjustments have to be made instantaneously even if your turns, balance and weight transfers are spot on. Any tips there? Maybe there aren't any.
    Or suggestions on how to keep everything lined up on jumps, especially if there's an angle or turn involved would be helpful. I had to learn all that by watching others and trial and error, and please I hope you take this as constructive criticism (as I really like and value this series) but I was hoping to find some pointers on these things that I missed in my self-education and there weren't any that I could see. It wasn't helpful hearing "be confident going into turns" or "trust your line" or whatever.
    Again, thanks for the videos and I do look forward to future episodes.

    • @skng
      @skng  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Michael Leone. Thanks for the message and we take any feedback as constructive. With our ski lesson series we've tried to create a full how to ski progression giving you tips and techniques to improve. What we haven't done much of so far is the 'what not to do' as we didn't want to create any confusion with the initial series. However our most recent film "The 7 deadly sins or Carving" does go into issues that we see so often on the mountain and how to solve them so that might be worth a look. We plan to do more of these in the future for different topics and situations that are common in skiing.
      Carving/Parallel skiing Sins: th-cam.com/video/n19QmFC2qVc/w-d-xo.html
      So hopefully as we grow we'll be able to bring you more of what you need. If there is anything specific you'd like to see just let us know.
      Cheers,
      Elate.

    I have a question regarding the skis themsleves. At what tension should the skis come off if you wipe out? When getting new skis, the dude said that the highest setting might break your legs before popping off. Im can go down the double blacks with ease, but there is always a risk of falling. Do you know a good tension level that wont pop off on a hard turn but also wont break your legs? Thx

    • @ChandlerShepherd

      Keep your knees bent, land with your skis flat and then slow down/stop. If you try to stop as you land you’ll probably hit an edge and/or skis will pop off.

    How come on those bigger ones I tend to land too far back? I try to counteract this by leaning forward but I have less control in the air. Any tips?

    • @skng
      @skng  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all comes down to the 'pop'. Make sure you are popping straight up or what feels like a little bit forward. Thinking about punching your hands forward to wrap around your bent knees can help with this too. Experiment with subtle changes and see how it goes. It's hard to fully diagnose without seeing. But does this make sense? Cheers Noddy.

    Hi there - Been a big fan of your video / instruction and it's because of your teachings that I've been able to take my skills to the next level. I'm currently an adv. beginner - inter. skier, but do not own my own skis (comfortable ski parallel blue slopes in Calirfornia). Equipment I normally use are rentals, 168-172mm with 68-75mm mids. Here is my issue. At times, when I catch a little air, I notice that it's hard to control my skis when airborne i.e. skis rotate laterally (left / right) in mid jump. What am I doing wrong, and how can I be capable of controlling my skis more? Thanks so much! - Eddie

    • @benjo33
      @benjo33 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This late, but it's really just preparing. An exercise I do is getting ankle weights and jumping while trying to keep my toes strait pointed out. Also when jumping, push down the back of your ankles and out the front of the skis up some degrees for a better firmer landing

    • @zman7117
      @zman7117 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +$$E$$ Depends on your height/weight. You might have too long of skis if you're only 5'5" for example. Also, try bending your knees a little more. Sometimes I see beginners hit jumps and lock their knees the entire time - which provides very little control and you're basically at the mercy of your trajectory.

      +Jack Carlos Thanks for the reply. I'm just under 6'1. Based on this information, what would you recommend? Last thing I want are my skis to get tangled while I'm airborne

    • @zman7117
      @zman7117 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      $$E$$ A good guideline is that when you stand your skis on the ground, the tips should be between your chin and forehead. This varies a little depending on your situation - if you ski on a lot of powder you'll want a longer ski to give you that float. But for the most part it's a good guideline and sounds like you have the right ski length.
      For your jumps, I'd suggest slowing down. You might be going too fast into them, causing that discomfort in the air. Biggest thing is, don't panic! When you're in the air there really isn't that much movement that should be going on. After your pop it should just be waiting/preparing for your landing.
      Try popping on flat ground without moving. You might be surprised how hard it is to go straight up and straight down. Once you master that, try that while going down the hill. Then move to jumps. Start with small jumps and focus on staying balanced/centered over your skis. Max out a jump before moving up in size! This means literally getting as high as you possibly can off that jump, while landing comfortably each time. Best of luck!

      @zman7117 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      $$E$$ O and 1 more thing: Make sure not to have too wide of a stance when approaching the jump. Some people have too wide of a stance so their pop has no power. Also, you have more control of your release when you have a closer stance. Closer meaning 6" between skis.

    How do you handle jumps in downhill? I mean jumps in high speed that goes forward and not up?

    • @skng
      @skng  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there. Well now, that all depends. So for speed jumps in downhill racing what we actually do is something called a 'pre-jump'. This is where we 'pop' long before the lip of the roller so that we are flying almost parallel to the ground. This minimises our height off the ground to reduce impact on landing and maintain speed/control. The hands forward, knees up approach works here too (reduced drag) and body forward. Is that roughly what you were wondering? cheers Noddy

    @DrMobiusOfficial 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey there! Quick question! How do you reposition yourself in midair so that you're aligned downhill (ie not leaning back relative to the slope)?

    • @skng
      @skng  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aimran479. If you're in a good, strong position over your skis you will naturally follow the shape of the hill. It all comes down to the take off and pop. If you're leaning back before you even get to the jump you'll end up in the 'back seat' on the landing. So practice popping straight up and focus on keeping your hands forward. Hope that helps.

    could you offer a tutorial on how to ski backwards? thanks!

    • @JRain234
      @JRain234 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As nobody has replied, I will.
      It might sound simplistic, but it really is this simple, just do everything backwards. Start with doing the normal beginner "pizza-chips/fries" facing uphill, then progress as Darren instructs for normal skiing, using balance, edges, etc. You can even do complete rotations by using the "flat ski" turn and just keep turning. It just takes practice and a feel for where your center of gravity will be as you rotate about the turn/rotation. One helpful hint I can give on this is to life your back ski as you make the rotation so it doesn't "catch an edge" -at least until you get the feel of the thing. Then go from there and in no time you'll be doing tricks down the piste!

    How do you counter the tendency for the body to rotate backwards in the air, after a big jump?

    • @skng
      @skng  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's all about body position Benzknees. If you're in a good, strong position over your skis you will naturally follow the shape of the hill. For bigger jumps wind resistance can be an issue and blow you into the 'back seat'. So try bringing the knees up a bit and focus on keeping your hands forward.

  • @yannickvertessen2721
    @yannickvertessen2721 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well explained but this is actually not the best way to jump. You'll only gain a little height this way.
    Best way is to do what's called a 'bunny hop'.
    It looks much better, gives way more control and you'll jump higher.
    It works in 2 stages. (practise on flat surface first)
    Stage 1: Kind of push your feet out in front of you so that the tips of your ski's are leaving the surface while your tail is stil on the grond. Your weight is still somewhere in the middle but slightly backwards.
    At this point, your legs will be stretched out.
    You have now gained airtime and height while your tail is still on the snow
    Stage 2: Simply pull in your legs and try to match the angle of your skis with the angle of the slope.
    You will have bent knees during impact which will reduce the shock.
    Start doing this and you'll notice that you'll jump so much higher with so much more style and control.
    A good way to practise is to ski straight forward and push your skis infant of you. Try to ski as far as possible with only the tails of your skis touching the snow. The 'pop' that is required to do is will greatly help you in the bunny-hop and countless other tricks or manoeuvres on- and off-piste.
