  • The 8Fun BBS02 is one of the only mid-drive electric bike conversion kits around, 8Fun is an established brand. Offers both pedal assist and throttle mode configurations, great LCD screen with lots of options. Not sophisticated enough to sense when shifting gears and let up, may wear chain and cassette faster. Keeps weight low and center on bike, makes fixing wheels and flats easier than hub motors.

      Hey! Thanks Frank, that means a lot to me. I ry to pack a lot in and do a great job as a one person team here. Love my bafang 750w motor! Fitted it to a Marin B17 down hill bike, 54volt 10ah lifepo4 battery, current gearing get 45mph+, 0 to 25mph under 2 seconds! Average 20 miles range with a mix of road and off road riding. About to fit a Nuvinci internal geared hub which should really work well with the motor. Great review and web site by the way, good source of information, thanks.

      That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your specs, I really like these BBS02 kits and being able to use your own battery for extra power, speed and range is great. The Nuvinci N360 is pretty good for mid-drive setups, hopefully it's an easy install. Thanks for the props on my website, glad it helped you out :)

    5:12 you can program these anyway you like. There are up to 9 levels of assist and you can also turn on thumb throttle only mode. Some of these can be done only via the programming cable and others through the head unit alone.

    1. The item in the battery bag on the recumbent bike is the charger. The motor controller is built into the unit itself.
    2. The controller can be custom programmed. For instance I have the the zero PAS setting set at throttle only. letriccycles.com can sell you a motor with custom programming.
    3. Pedaling backwards or slight tap on the ebrakes cuts the motor for shifting.
    4. The motor is very quiet. Compare the sound in this video to those of the Bosch bikes.

    Thanks for another informative review. I am currently having Matt Hughs from EMPowered cycles in Castro Valley, CA install a Bafang BBHD with 52V/13.5AH battery on my HP Velotechnik Scorpion FS 26 recumbent trike. This will have derailleur & brake motor cutoff. I had a stroke and had to switch to a recumbent cycle as a result. This should be awesome for me. The fully suspended trike should be able to do light off-roading too.

      ElectricBikeReview.com That motor is just insanely overpriced. Electric motors are simple and cheap to manufacture and $750 for just the motor and a freewheel is absurd. With a couple of brackets you could pick an old electric scooter out of the trash and use it's motor and controller and buy a freewheel for the BB at sickbikeparts. If the price of batteries falls (and that's unlikely given the collapse of oil prices), that is what I will do... I'll build my own. The kit should be maybe $100 more than the battery and controller, not $750. These aren't industrial high performance motors, they are consumer grade non field serviceable (all industrial grade motors are field serviceable. Field serviceability is one of the hallmarks of being industrial grade), they just aren't worth the kind of money they are asking. When you add up all the costs, you can just buy a motorcycle if practical transportation is your goal. If cycling is just a hobby, what's the point? Pedaling is the hobby.

      ElectricBikeReview.com Hey EBR, after building this set for my dad on a mountain bike. I feel
      indifferent with you about praising this motor kit, I would give this
      kit a bad review.
      The main problem with it is that it has a
      terrible chainline alignment problem. The motor on the driveside has a
      large internal cog which blatantly sticks way out to the right side of
      the bike. This changes the Q factor of your right leg tremendously
      (about 2cm) and you will be fine on the small gear in the back (for
      speed) but as soon as you start climbing up the gears, the
      misalignment/crosschaining is so prominent, the chain wants to jump from
      the crank to the frame.
      I try to counter the problem by having a
      slacker chain but the offset is just too great that basically, bigger
      gears should not/cannot be used. The chain simply comes off at the
      front.
      another problem I have with this kit is not very serious
      but still upsets me. The mounting system for the motor relies on a
      clamping system on either side of the BB onto the frame with steel teeth
      with 40nm of force. It does not utilize the threads of a BSA bottom
      bracket. This means you best use this motor on a frame you could care
      less about because it damages the face of the BB after installation and
      use. I would say the BB face surface would not be reusable, not even
      with facing and chasing
      to me, this kit is a testament to Chinese
      engineering and blatantly ignores many fundamental bike mechanics. my
      recommendation is DO NOT BUY THIS KIT, it is a compromise of
      price/product. buy a bike with a frame made for the motor so you wont
      have to worry about chainline and frame damage. Pedalling with one leg
      way out there is not good for your hips/knees either.

      tarstarkusz I have actually built my own mid motor system entriely out of a free recycled 500 watt mobility scooter that was old and in the trash. Used the same controller and throttle and even the built in 24 volt battery charger and battery guage, horn and key! Welding up a BMX single speed freewheel sprocket that ran on a small chain to a custom made left hand sprocket was tricky but It worked. The worm drive reduction gear used on scooters was noisy and cumbersome. But yeah, if money is a real problem and you have skills, all these things can be build DIY from upcycled parts being thrown away everyday! Also cheap are 500 watt 24volt 12 inch scooter rear hub motors, which can be pushed to 48volts. Normally mounted to a 16" tire. Makes a good pancake motor to cut down and build your own StokeMonkey style in line chain drive system. Might cost 50 bucks for an old scooter motor.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mike Brink I agree, they are just way too expensive to be anything more than a toy for someone with lots of cash to throw away. Mass production may be able to help and maybe Elon Musk's giga-factory will help lower the costs of the battery. The battery really is the biggest problem with an e-bike. Most can't even do 20miles in real world conditions unless you are using only a minor pedal assist. I really don't know if the market is big enough for mass manufacturing though, especially in the US. Almost everyone owns a car and almost everyone who bikes also owns a car and bike for pleasure.

      Hey Marshall, sounds like a sweet setup you've made! Yeah, the bike in the video literally was thrown together. Excellent review! The only thing missing was mentioning that the throttle input is an excellent means for adding punch when climbing steep hills in low gearing when the power-assist level 3 begins to fade. I agree wholeheartedly that they absolutely should have made the assist 0 a throttle-only mode.

    FYI, you can program the BaFang 750 to work on PAS 0 if you like. There is an App you can download and a cable with a USB port on one side and the other to the bike screen. Plus you can order the gear change motor cut off so there is no gear mashing.

    Nice crisp video, just a slight rectification. There are newer models now “Bafang Ultra” That has All the Sensors included. And on the Bbshd Bbs02 you’ll have the cadence/speed/brake sensors and you can add the gear shift sensor for about $20 bucks. As for a solution for the torque sensor you get the PAS where you can choose for up to 9 pedal power assist

    I've had one of these on order for over 2 weeks now from China and it still hasn't shipped! I swear I have watched this video 10 times while waiting, its gonna be so good when I finally get my hands on it. I got it for the equivalent of $700 but you really get what you pay for on the service side with these wait times for a 'sample' unit straight from the factory. It is alibaba though so I won't lose any money if it never turns up, but I really hope it works out and I can be cruising with this kit soon. Once I saw mid drives I knew I couldn't settle for a hub motor.

      Electric Bike Review Thanks for your reply, I am hoping it will work out and I will get the kit in the next 10 days or so.
      I ordered the 350 watt Bafang bbs02 by the way due to lots of bad reports about the unresponsiveness of the pedal assist on the 01 model. I chose to go with that over the 750 mainly because I want handling that will be plausibly legal with the 250 watt EU limit as I want to use it partly for commuting and city use. However, I am putting it on an old Dawes Chilliwack fixed fork mountain bike which has seen plenty of crazy trail action all over the UK, so I am hoping to get some good off road experience on it with the kit on steep downhill trails come next summer. I would love to contribute to your forum once I have had a few weeks and months of experience with this thing, because I have found a relatively small amount of information about these units in the run up to buying one, particularly any comments on the power and speed when going up hills, especially throttle only and especially on the 350 watt unit. I also want to know whether it is comfortable or desirable to switch off the system and use pedal power alone so I can get my daily exercise.
      Anyway, I will do my best to contribute to the sum total of knowledge about this product on your forum when I have tested it extensively.

      +Electric Bike Review Oh btw its Aliexpress, which is sort of the more ebay-esque format Alibaba, which doesn't require bulk orders and is intended for consumers rather than suppliers. I regret to say I don't know exactly how the policy works, but it does say in plain english on the login screen that if no product or an incorrect product turns up, you are entitled to a complete refund, and payment is only released when you acknowledge receipt of the package on the site.

    I've worked with the Bosch and shimano steps motors, and they dont have all the sensors. they simply detect the torque coming in thru the cranks, and then just add a multiplier to it. no brake sensing etc, doesnt need it.
    its so intuitive, I could do mad wheelies straight away with it

  • @TheEdge008
    @TheEdge008 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another great review, Court!
    Your Chinese is pretty darn good!
    The Chinese consider the number "8" to mean prosperity or wealth. Phonetically, it sounds like "bot" rhyming with robot. If one were to eliminate the "t" sound at the end, then you get the "bah" sound. Putting it all together you will get that "bah fong" sound.
    All right, enough of the Chinese.
    At 4:50 into the video, I agree with your rant: Bafang needs to have a throttle-only mode that is separated from PAS. But they should still keep the throttle mode available with PAS. There are times when I'm on, say level 2, and just need a tad bit of help but not as much as level 3.
    It would be cool too if they could update their firmware so that the system would back off on the power during shifts.
    Thanks again!

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, thanks for the feedback on how 8 is pronounced and also the significance of it :D
      It's just nice to be able to choose when and how to use a throttle. Of course it would be great if it also backed off during shifting but that might also add complexity to the system... it would have to somehow connect to the shifting mechanism or something. Any ideas on how that could work without getting too complicated?

    • @TheEdge008
      @TheEdge008 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electric Bike Review I have no idea how that would be done. I guess only Haibike has that part figured out. I noticed that the iZip E3 Peak doesn't back off on the power during shifts either.
      Maybe Haibike/Bosch wanted to keep that proprietary to their bikes and not share it with the iZip product line, even though iZip and Haibike belong to Currie Tech.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Yeah... it must be an electrical signal or something when you activate the shifter. I'll ask the next time I'm near some of these bikes with a knowledgeable engineer. Great technology :)

    The Nuvinci N360 haven't designed for 750W mid-drive, but maximum 250W. The Nuvinci N171 is a better gear-hub to do that. You can check this point on the N360 specification...

    • @ElectricBikeReview

      Interesting, I didn't realize they had two products. I'll keep an eye out for the NuVinci N171 is it still in development? As far as rugged internally geared hubs go, the Rohloff Speedhub seems pretty good but isn't a CVT like NuVinci.

    Great review as are all of Court's.
    I want to clear up a couple of either misconceptions or things that changed since 2014.
    Price is now a lot less than $1500. I just bought one from www.empoweredcycles.com for $1100, motor + 17.5 Ah (about 800 watt-hour) battery. Would have been about $1000 with a 13.5 Ah battery.
    The big thing to mention is that you can get a bafang gear sensor for $50. The "gear mashing" Court mentioned at the 8:20 mark is not an issue at all with this sensor. The motor cuts out when you hit the shift lever, even if you keep pedalling, so shifting is smooth with this sensor added.
    I have a trek 8.6 ds hybrid with this kit. I love it. Top speed is easily 28 mph on the flat, I can cruise at over 20 in low assist, with a range of more than 40 miles (after a 40 mile ride I still had about 1/4 charge left). Range would be a bit less if you put it at high assist the whole time, I haven't tested that yet. It also climbs great, I have a 46 chainring and an 11-36 in the back. In 46/36 granny I can readily go up over 20% gradient.
    I don't really notice any lack of smoothness with the cadence sensor. I've test ridden a Kalkhoff with the Bosch system and this feels just as nice to me. For a lot less $

    You forgot to mention that on this kind of bike it must be amazing if we talk about swiching gear, no gear mashing, just smooth and powerfull acceleration :) But it must be strange pushing throttle + swiching gears in the same time though

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true, this bike doesn't have shift sensing technology built in so the chain and sprockets can mash together when shifting as you accelerate. I thought I touched on it a bit in the video and I definitely wrote about it in the full review) but I'll try to call it out more in the future :)
      Here's a quote from the review "Compared with purpose built centerdrive systems this one doesn’t have the ability to sense when you shift gears so that could lead to some grinding and wear the chain and cassette down faster…" and the link: electricbikereview.com/8fun/bbs02/ thanks again for sharing Ladislav, I appreciate your feedback and am always trying to get better at this.

    Good video im pretty positive the bafang kits are only slightly behind the bosch ones. Bafang however will probably update the kits next year as they are shipping the 350w & 750w kits right now and we are going to see better kits but for the moment the 01 and 02 should be fine they seem to be a lot better than those front and rear kits.

    If you just lightly touch brake levers they do not brake but act as clutch for changing gears. It shows when motor is disengaged on the screen supplied (small circle). Use the the brakes as clutch I have built a few of these bikes there is also an accessory that can be applied that senses gear changing but why bother just lightly touch brake lever and use as clutch. I think thats the way they actually want you to use it but they don't supply great instructions. It's a learning process but once you remember when changing gear no more crunching at the gears.

    So incorporating a nuvinci hub eliminates the need for a rear cassette and it acts like an auto transmission? Does using a nuvinci hub make it so you're less likely to break a chain due to the high torque motor? IOW that fancy hub works 'in sync' with the motor and it instinctively knows which gear will make the motor happy?
    If all that is true then I def want a mid drive. Thanks

    Thanks for the review. I was wondering why a 1000 watt unit is not available? I thought the law was no faster than 20 mph and no more than a 1000 watt motor. Or, is it a 1000 watt motor is just too powerful for the bikes drive system?

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, the law in the United States is 750 watts or less and 20mph unassisted with throttle or that same amount of power (that would get a 170 lb rider to 20mph) but open to higher speeds if the rider is pedaling along (this is known as speed pedelec) I've listed some of those reviews here: electricbikereview.com/tag/speed/

      It offers several assist levels (I think you can set it from 3 to 8 and it just divides the levels into smaller increments of power output). I believe the throttle also offers variable output so you could twist it just a tad to get less power and really twist it for more if you need.

      Great question, I haven't spent a lot of time with this kit since reviewing it but every once in a while I'll see it pop up on a conversion that a friend has made. Here's a quick video of one such conversion from just a couple weeks back: th-cam.com/video/YS-_TT20KNU/w-d-xo.html as far as the best mid-drive systems out there... I think Bosch is definitely a leader but the Impulse 2.0 is also very good and Yamaha and Shimano are also entering the space (though I haven't seen them yet). If you want distance and care about reliability, this might be a great bike to consider: electricbikereview.com/focus/thron-impulse-speed/ but for the price and for conversions the BBS02 is still a solid choice in my opinion :)

    • @1650million
      @1650million 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ElectricBikeReview.com
      Hey man, thanks for your answer.
      The Impulse 2.0 does look like a much more sophisticated product, but AFAIK you can´t buy it separately, you have to buy the bike as well, ala Bosch. That´s precisely what I´d like to avoid, since I already have a very decent full suspension bike, so I rather put the money towards the best kit I can find, and/or some recharching solutions (My goal is to hit 100Km/day, which is something I might not be able to do with a single battery, so I have to think about some efficient way to recharge that battery, if that´s even possible at all).
      If you have any other suggestion I´d certainly love to hear about it.
      Cheers mate.

      1650million Cool, in that case I think the Bafang BBS02 system would be perfect. Hi Electric Bike Review - thanks so much for this video. I am considering purchasing this kit and was hoping you could answer a couple of question: you mention that the kit comes with brake levers that will signal to the motor to stop - I am wondering if it is difficult to set these up ? Also, I notice the bike in the video has disc brakes - I assume this means the kit is compatible with these without any modification or extra parts? What do you think it would be like to ride if you just didn't install these break levers - My thinking is that, since the motor stops when you stop pedalling, and you would logically always stop pedalling when you brake, surely these brake levers are not necessary - would you agree or do you think the brake lever things are a must?
    Thanks for your help

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Josh, the included brake levers are very easy to setup, they just have one extra wire coming out that goes to the drive controller to signal cutoff... the rest is the same. To set them up you just pull the cable and and endpoint out of your existing levers and unscrew them from your handle bars, then put the new levers on and replace the cable and endpoint. The kit is indeed compatible with disc brakes as well as any type of rim brakes but they have to be mechanical. You cannot use the levers included with this kit for a hydraulic brake setup. To answer your last question, no, you don't have to use the included brake levers. There are several purpose built ebikes out there that don't have fancy brakes like this but they are nice to have for a bit of added safety.

    Este kit realmente parece ser bom, mas e a manutenção quantos km rodados eu digo testado. Ele chega ser mais robusto que um Bionx que esta há muito tempo no mercado. Acredito que a manutenção é um pouco complexa devido engrenagens uma eletrônica ainda em sedimentação. Você indicaria este kit para uma pessoa que ira rodar 65 KM diários, ele suportaria mais que um Bionx.

    • @ElectricBikeReview
      @ElectricBikeReview  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Cleidson! Sounds like you have a long ride each day... One of the neat things about the BionX kits is that they are gearless which means fewer moving parts. This will help them last longer. That said, the 8Fun BBS01 or BBS02 will be efficient because it uses your gears for leverage. Either of these kits would be great and the nice thing about 8Fun is that you can use different batteries. With BionX, you have to use their system.

People on the Endless-Sphere electric bike forum have gotten hold of the software that allows changing the motor controller configuration parameters beyond what can be done with the display unit. It's possible to make assist 0 be a throttle-only mode. Do a search on the Endless-Sphere forum and you'll find an excellent thread that thoroughly discusses all of this. Thinking of adding this kit to a box bike (workcycle version of Bakfiets.nl, with the wooden box in front of handlebars where kids & groceries sit, then front 20" wheel in front of that. As the front has m81 drum brakes and hub generator and mounts for disc brakes would have to be welded on and back has that plus Nexus 8 internal drive train going hub motor would mean switching a lot out. So mid-drive it is. (Bike manufactorer version of e-assist is front hub 250W motor, switching out painted rim and adding magura hydraulic rim brakes, and chaining out lights, they are curious how it works out for me as are interested in trying 250/350W Bafang BBS01 mid-drive in future.)
    My worry mixing this BBS02 motor (500W version, same motor but controller with lower setting 18or20amp max versus 25a for 750W) is the Nexus 8. Its not 2kw but your comments in video about grinding gears has me worried. I get feedback of others worried about this but has anyone actually ruined a drive train with a mid-drive less than 750W?
    New to this, have bike about to buy this kit.

      @ElectricBikeReview  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a good setup. Here's a review I shot of the BBS01 (the less powerful version of this mid-drive from 8Fun). I think it would work fine with the Nexus 8 and have seen lots of other traditional mid-drive bikes that use a rear cassette vs. CVT like NuVinci. The only real downside is that you might not be able to switch gears at rest like you can on a NuVinci. Here's the BBS01: electricbikereview.com/8fun/bbs01/

      Sure, the bikes I tested were assembled by Long Island Electric Bikes and I believe they sell multiple battery sizes and configurations from AllCell. Just reach out and ask, maybe start from their product page here: longislandelectricbikes.com/bafang-mid-drive-motor-750-watt-48-volt-bbs02

    So what if I installed this on a bike with a rear hub moter like the izip e3 dash

      dillon hand Well... you'd have to figure out where to put the second battery pack so the bike would be a lot heavier (likely 15+ pounds) but my guess is that they could work in tandem and just add more power for climbing and stuff :)

      I was thinking about getting the emotion jumper, the one you own. could the battery pack from the 8fun connect to the underside of the jumper? I notice since it has smaller wheels, there is more clearance.

      dillon hand Neat idea but I doubt you can mix batteries. If you're looking at adding batteries then start with a kit like the 8Fun BBS02: electricridereview.com/8fun/bbs02/

    This pretty much is exactly what I want, but the kit costs more than some entire electric bikes. I mean, if the battery runs $800, I may as well buy an entire bike. Does anyone know of a good mountain bike type mid drive that has the nuvinci? I don't want a mid drive without that.

    Forced pedal assist? Screw that controller then. Besides you can do twice the power at 2/3 the price without 8fun's help. Really like that continuous trans rear axle. Looks spendy too. Mid drive man on a rear hub budget in my world.. :) Nice bike.

    Bosh and othr factory installs dont even compare torque wise to the Luna cycle motors. It's been tested trying to carry a 300 pound man. the factory bikes wouldnt even move uphill. the Luna cycle carryed him up the hill at 26kh
