Ford Excursion Rear Leaf Spring Upgrade (swap)

  • The rear leaf springs on my 2002 Ford Excursion 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo diesel 4x4 were looking really worn out and we are getting ready to start pulling a big travel trailer, so instead of just replacing them with the stock leaf springs, I decided to upgrade to the cheaper and stronger rear leaf springs from a F250/F350. The chassis of an excursion is the same so it is a really easy way to save money on a more common leaf spring and increase your towing on a stock excursion.
I used the 43-1261 springs for this, and besides the issues with working on almost 20 year old parts and surface rust the process is really simple and takes much more brawn than brains.

I did the same swap & it made my 2003 Excursion ride better!
Paid $150 for rear springs from F350 from a wrecking yard.

Aero-Kroil works magic on the rusted bolts

Nice work and great video. As you’ve undoubtedly found by now, the main spring pack is good for ~350 lbs-in and that over load spring that it’s sitting on is ~600 lbs-in. That means that combined, you’re riding on a spring rate of ~1k lbs-in which is far stiffer than the factory springs. The Ex rear (and factory springs) are much heavier than that of an F250. Two best options are 1) ditching the overload and picking up a PMF block to achieve your desired ride height, or 2) selling the F250 springs, purchase Pro Comp 22415 springs and ditch the block.

Thanks RS. I was hoping I can use the 22415's and ditch the riser block on the 04 excursion. My Pro-Comp fronts are working out fantastic. I am now trying to bring the rear up to match. Shooting for a 4 " rise all around.

Think you'll be pleased with the ride quality improvement and lift. Next up...35s. ;)

Hey so how is everything going now, how does it tow and ride? I'm about to do springs and shocks too and was curious if you had an update. Great video!

I ended up putting air ride on my 6.0 excursion two-wheel drive. My bumper pull that weighs 10000 lb then I have a nice Gap and I don't feel the strain on the rear suspension. I do wonder about our getting to a newer suspension if it makes a difference. After you upgrade your suspension were you happy with the upgrade later on after you drove it for 500 miles?

An Excursion, RV and a Leaf? Kinda like my garage/driveway.

How much of a slope is your driveway? Does it feel okay putting it up on jack stands with that amount of slope?

Should have put some F-550 Leaf Springs on it

Also did you notice your factory rear springs were flat with no arch at all?

My excursion has flat springs on the rear and reverse curved on the front. A total mess. I understand that Ford wanted to make this heavy beast fit in every garage. A low slung boulevard cruiser. I love my Excursion but have spend the last 5 years trying to get the suspension worked out.

hi Home Maker did you used the stock blocks on your excursion with the springs

Yes I just reused the blocks that were on there already for now. After doing the front and rear the rear is about half an inch lower than the front, so maybe down the road I'll level it out but for now I'm not worried about it.

We’re you able to fit in garage still?

To level it you can mod the new rears using the lower leafs and spacer plates from original pack
