      When Im using a fire plug I fluff it up then skewer it on a thin sharpened twig, that way once its burning I can pick it up by the twig and move it about without any problems.

    a plastic baggie 1/2 full of plain old Dryer lint is something that's always in my pocket....I live in OryGun, where it rains about 9 months of the year, so tinder, in the Wet season is harder to find, and the older I get, (76 now), the more I just say the heck with it, and light some Dryer Lint...I also make Fire Starters out of Egg cartons, full of Dryer Lint with Melted paraffin poured in them....works like a champ when it's raining, and you got soaked setting up a tarp..." SIGH " ......OnWard........

    Oh the joy of building a fire. I just got back from my UK trip and have yet to get out to the woods. Had to make do with a some stove tests in my back yard. Not quite as nice but will have to do for a few more days. Thanks for sharing Rob

    13:00 Using wedges: thanks for the explanation, and it just confirms my view that such small knives aren't really for bashing through wood. Either have a Big knife as well, or use a decent wedge. As you said, protect that valuable knife, use the Big bugger! Knife works jolly well! [Some skill there from the user, I'll admit! ;-) ]
    Those feathersticks are beauties, eh?
    "A bit rusty" So, what have you been doing with yourself, wasting away the summer?
    Congrats on the Sales!

    I do like the look of the Ben orford parang, a bit pricey for me, I did get my hands on a condor bushcraft parang and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised just how good it is. Origin knives make a superb parang, and his tracker knife is a work of art. Easy going outdoors does some good videos on them. Good to see you out again.👍🏻

    Rob I’ve been carrying a version of that little combo firesteel with my edc for many years. Mine included a whistle on one end. If you decide you like it I could suggest a mod to save you some trouble. Early on, I lost, or the firesteel came unglued within the first several months of edc. In fairness, I play with my edc regularly, and it probably wasn’t designed for regular use. The problem is easily fixed by using high grade epoxy or super glue when it’s new to strengthen the bond between the firesteel and the plastic body. I have one I’ve been carrying and using for over a year now with no further problem. The other issue worth noting is the retention on the clip of the detachable striker declines with use. I keep mine on my keychain and I have had it detach in my pocket. The little ferro rod works surprising well as long as you have quality tender. I love your channel and still working to improve my feather sticks but so far I’m no where near Rob quality!

      Good to know that mate, the intention was to strap it to the kydex neck sheath of the MK2 for emergency use.

    remember those cheap and nasty 'keyring tubes' that were so small you could just about put sweeteners or salt and pepper in them well I dug out the 12 pack that I had bought and was annoyed at, it turns out they're just the right size for a fire plug so I've now got them attached to ferro rods and my Victorinox Farmer

    Another idea haven't gotten around to trying yet, is using heat shrink tubing on a fire plug. Think most plugs are 8mm-10mm so an AAA battery wrap should be ideal. Maybe with a little cord loop for hanging. And see if some slices on the end of the tubing will help in ripping it apart without a knife.

    • @RenThraysk
      @RenThraysk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gave it a go with some Forest Fundamentals fire plugs and 17mm wide when flat AAA battery wrap off Amazon.
      The plug fits well, heat shrink on the ends so can't slide out.
      Pre nicked can rip it open with my nails, but a ferro rod scraper should be able to get it open.
      Think a roll of AAA battery wrap is better than precut. As can put multiple fireplugs together like string of sausages. Like 3 plugs end to end is 3.5" long. Can expose half a plug, break it half, light a fire, and then apply heat to seal the remaining plugs in place.
      It's the same idea as the impregnanted rope firestarters.
