- I walk to the home of Antarctic explorer Tom Crean in County Kerry. Tom Crean (1877-1938) was an Irish Antarctic explorer and one of the key figures in early 20th-century Antarctic exploration. Renowned for his remarkable feats of endurance, Crean participated in three expeditions with Ernest Shackleton, including the famous Endurance expedition. His courage and strength in the face of extreme adversity, such as the legendary rescue of his stranded comrades, solidified Crean's legacy as one of Ireland's greatest explorers, earning him the accolade of the "Irish Giant" in Antarctic history.

Hello Derek. My wife was born in Annascaul, you probably walked past her sisters house who still lives there!! I did a painting of Tom with his pipe for a recent exhibition and one of Annascaul lake. The story of survival is truly that of an "Unsung Hero", and you are so right that nobody knows who he is. If I remember correctly, it was down to Shackleton, Worsley and Crean that all crew members of Endurance were saved. Amazing story and you have done him proud by telling the story. God bless you Derek. M and M.
So enjoyed that,Tom was such a part of that great era of exploration.
dear Derek,2021 I was in Annascaul and stood in front of Tom...what a strong person..............Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘
An incredible story about Tom Crean, Irish explorer, by another. Well done Derek.
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was another Irishman born in Kilkea, Kildare. I read 'Unsung Hero' A great book and I recommend it to everybody.

Irish seafarers have sailed around the world … St Brendan sailed to the artic and it is believed that he actually discovered America in the 5th century a thousand years before columbus
Seafaring/ nomads travellers are in the Irish blood…
One of my great grandfather named Patrick OConnor, descended came from a line of dairy farmers out of Cavan, his want to see the world so made him join the merchant marines as a young lad and after he sailed the world, he met his Irish born wife in London married, emigrated to America, settled in an Irish town called Dunbar (Appalachia) and became a dairy farmer

And now I know about Tom Crean; a fascinating tribute, thank you.
Such an incredible story and a humble man. Loved hearing it. I have heard his name before but it is still not well known. It looks like snow at the end of the video. It was probably just the way it came through on the camera. Mind yourself
Great passion by you in this documentary.
You've no control over the circumstances into which you're born, or the lot your genes give you; what matters is the decisions you make in life, and the determination to push through your struggles to be the best you can be. It's a real shame Tom never gave any interviews; there must have been so much he could have told.
Inch - a massive favorite of mine. Well done.
Derek. Best vid you have done and I have been watching since the start. Pictus
That's my parish church, Keel church at the start! It's actually a village called Boolteens. Castlemaine being a few miles back east. Many a candle I lit at those same boxes as a young lad haha.
Glad to see you stopped by Inch also.
Absolutely incredible feats of endurance. Literally fantastical episodes of the most ridiculous circumstances and each time, usually alone or often helping others, there’s our Tom Crean 💚 Derek you stir heart with your storytelling thankyou
Another great tribute to a great Irish person. The line on the grave, home is the sailor home from the sea. Reminded me of a song.
