Road rage, CS gas, and aggravated assault. These things usually don’t go hand-in-hand with F1 drivers - but that quickly changed in 1991. With seven world titles, 91 wins, and an unforgettable legacy, Michael Schumacher changed F1 as we know it. But the story of Michael’s F1 debut in Spa-Francorchamps might just be the craziest part of his entire career..

In Michael's first qualifying at SPA, he was outpacing Andrea De Cesaris outright. The team went to Andrea saying Michael was flat at the Eau Rouge and was asking Andrea to do the same to find more pace. Andrea declined saying he was experiencing vibrations at the front and had to back off the throttle. So the team went back to Michael and asked if this was true. Michael said, "yes, but if you keep it flat, the front end downforce kicks in and stabilizes the front". Legendary stuff.

A couple of mistakes in there:

Gachot got physically attacked by the taxi driver, so that's a GBH straight away. Spraying CS gas was the only way to prevent the taxi driver from fulfilling his threat which was already well on its way to become a reality.
The problem is that the namby-pamby UK law says that you cannot defend yourself - CS gas being 'Section 5' - wholly prohibited unless you have special dispensation.
I'm sure EJ could have talked it all down before it got serious. Please remember that it may not be the police who was the problem here, but the Crime Prosecution Service who want their figures at the end of the year. They are the REAL fuckers.

The thing was that jordan was way over his budget for 1991 the reason he took the Yamaha engines for 1992 - they were free of charge). So he went to Sauber-Mercedes, which had Schumi under legal contract and told them that he'd like to keep Michael but only if they pay another sum of money like they did before Spa. Briatore and Walkinshaw saw their chance and told Mercedes that they will take Schumi and would not want anything to be payed so Shumi went to Benetton. Now wonder the next sentence by Ron Dennis to Eddie Jordan was "Welcome to the piranha club"

    Got to defend Gachot there.
He was a bloody quick driver finally given a shot in a good car. This whole spray-can thing got blown out of proportion.
As far as I know, the taxi driver threatened him, he used gas-spray as self-defense because he felt in danger. He did not know the use of gas-spray was banned in the UK. He was belgian, after all, and it was legal there.
Of course it was against the law, but taking the circumstances into consideration, common sense would say he should not be jailed.
No wonder the drivers took part in protest for his sentence, wearing FreeGachot t-shirts.
