    Our favorite so far. We started watching from the Beach at Mount Sinai. You've got SO many vids though, after we're caught up perhaps we'll binge watch the priors. My wife loves how you're grateful for the sun, the water, everything around you and everything you have. A humbleness much too rare of TH-cam creators. She might be keen on the recipe app for iPad as well LOL. I love how you tell us what you're thinking, explain the gear with close ups, describe why you have which sails up and other possible options, show passing ships, sunken vessels, and loads of background info on everything you talk about. You inspire me to make improvements to my own show. Thank you for sharing your and Mo's life at sea with us.

    We really loved this one - loads of great info. And though Mo only had a short cameo (and was much missed), she did deliver one truly stellar line! :-)

    Awesome Video, Can't wait for the next episode. I live in Gloucester and a a result of watching your channel and Delos channel I am totally hooked. As a life long motor boater this year I bought an Oday 26 and have been learning to sail. I also work from home and have been using it for my office. Totally hooked thanks to you. Keep up the good work and again cannot wait until the next episode. Tell Moe she should have sprung up out of that berth entering Glosta Haba. HAHA! Fair Winds my friend. If you ever get back this way I would love to meet you..thanks

    I want to do for a home what you have done for Paragon. I love how you've got everything so self contained and on triple back-up. One of my favorite episodes so far and there's still so much more to go. Great wake-up scene, I do that to my wife sometimes and I get a similar death stare.

    My Dad and I used to Tuna Fish in Gloucester Bay in the 70s - giant tuna that is on his 40 foot custom power boat. Saw lots of whales and assorted fish - beautiful scenery all around. Thanks for your videos and going through the process of what it takes to plan a sail, interesting.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer, Welcome aboard! :) There are quite a few videos to navigate...may we make a few suggestions? Of our 285 videos produced to date, I would most recommend starting out with:
      • Our sneak peeks for Season 1 starting at th-cam.com/video/_JAT---54Lo/w-d-xo.html
      • Or the actual Season 1 episodes at starting at th-cam.com/video/INmbqwVoyIY/w-d-xo.html
      • And more recently there's our Season 2 trailer which starts in this playlsit th-cam.com/video/b6ZE6RuVMxM/w-d-xo.html and the rest of the Season 2 episodes which follow after that.
      • We also have several ‘cruiser interview’ videos, but for an overview we would recommend our ‘1st Annual Cruiser Interview Review’ video at th-cam.com/video/aEuBLeVZrgs/w-d-xo.html which highlights some of our favorite parts.
      • We have several other offshore voyage adventure videos, but for an overview we would recommend our ‘1st Annual Sailing Adventures Review’ video th-cam.com/video/J6IxLLAkprY/w-d-xo.html which also highlights some of our favorite moments.
      • We also have a separate channel called "ParagonSkies" wherewe publish aerial tour videos of the places we have sailed to, for which I would recommend our aerial trailer at th-cam.com/video/Hbb7xKV2fdI/w-d-xo.html
      We always really appreciate any feedback or suggestions on how we can improve on our future videos in comments and emails, and try our best to respond to questions as soon as we can. We also have a facebook page at facebook.com/DrakeParagon and blog at 39degree.blogspot.com.
      Thank you for sailing with us! :)

    Thanks for another great video, Drake! Questions:
    1. Did you sort out the problem with the chartplotter?
    2. What do you think of Furuno electronics?
    3. What kind of furler do you have? I'm wondering if you need something bigger. I have a Schaefer 3100. It easily retracts the genoa on my 47 foot boat in high winds without using a winch.
    4. Do you have all of the info on Paragon's equipment written down somewhere on the internet? I think your solar setup is fascinating.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Christopher Young Thanks Christopher, It happens very rarely, but sometimes our Furuno Navnet chart plotter crashes and requires rebooting, Otherwise I am really happy with it. I was able to install it all myself, including a Furuno radar dome, and depth/speed/wind transducer and instrument displays. I like the chart detail, the ease of downloading charts and installing them, and having a radar overlay on top of the chart. We have Profurl roller furlers on both headsails, and I can easily furl them without a winch in lighter winds, but in heavier air, anything over 30 knots I find it's a lot easier to use the winch. Sorry we don't have a website with all of the details about our boat and systems and etc, but we are focusing all of our energy towards filming and editing. We are doing our best to produce episodes that are the best that we can, and find that there's hardly any time left over much else. But I am happy to try to answer any questions that I can in comments when we are able to. Our solar set up is made up of 15 130 watt Kyocera solar panels that are hooked up to 5 networked BlueSky Solar boost solar controllers.

      @ChristopherYoung5977 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have installed and used Garmin and RayMarine systems. So far I find Garmin much better. My research into Furuno is that it might be overkill for most boats. Lots of info here:

    One of the things you can do to pole out a head sail is attach a snatch block on the end of the boom (main down) and run the jib sheet through that. Then ease out the boom with a preventer and unfurl. Works great for sailing deep and wing 'n wing with jib and staysail if you only have one whisker pole.

    I've been experimenting with using the whisker pole as a crane boom to put the hard dinghy on deck. Would be interested to know how you get yours on deck and flipped as well as how you launch it.

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +LEB 3 HI LEB 3, Nowadays we just use one of our spinnaker halyards to raise the dinghies on deck. I can put it on a winch on the mast or preferably I use it on the electric windlass. Flipping it over is always a multi step time consuming chore but can manage it even single handed. I use the halyard again to raise one side or the other, and a boat pole to pull the dingy over. We will make a video of it at some point (I think we may already have but have not come to that part it our editing yet.)

  • @LeicaLouie
    @LeicaLouie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Drake, did you sort your auto pilot issues? One possible problem with powerful drives is too thin wires. You need wires with a large section so that in a gust, when the pump has to work harder and take a higher current the voltage won't drop which may lead to an error or it may even shut down.
    Thank you for sharing another great video which apart from the whale sounds was great! I truly enjoyed the monologue/ singlehanded video.
    Cheers!

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Luis Martins Thanks Luis.. Reminds me of when I spent most of an extremely cold winter living aboard in Boston Harbor without heating because I had installed an Espar diesel forced air heater with an inadequately sized wire between the batteries and the glow plug. I wasn't sized large enough for the current drop and so the glow plug would never heat up enough to start the heater. Weeks and weeks of living in the freezing cold trying to figure it out... and when I did it was one of the happiest days.. :)

      +S/V AIRPOWER Thanks! In realtime we have spent the past 2 months in the Faroe Islands and are preparing to sail back to Scotland very soon to spend the winter editing Season 3. In the meantime we have accumulated about 1500 hours of unedited footage and are still filming.

  • @loftygoals4514
    @loftygoals4514 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I continue to enjoy all of your videos while I dream of our own (eventual) sailing life. I know this isn't real time - have you by chance picked up a whisker pole to benefit the downwind sailing since this video was made?

    • @drakeParagon
      @drakeParagon  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lofty Goals As we are at this moment preparing to sail from Faroe back to Iceland we still don't have a whisker pole. I did previously set up our whisker pole and we used it with a jib a few times which was great but then it snapped in half while sailing from Newfoundland to Greenland. We need a bigger and sturdier whisker pole, but I have no idea how I can convenient and affordably get one where we are sailing currently.

    About your error message on your Nav Device. the address is showing the location of where the read error or write error happens. Think of a large parking lot with slots for vehicles and each slot has an address. Now think of each vehicle in the parking lot as being a packet of information that is put in a spot and the address to that spot is noted. That information could be its own independent packet or it could be part of several packets that can be usually next to it or could be parked wherever it happened to be parked in the lot (usually in consecutive spaces though).
    Now you know that a huge parking lot is going to have some tiny spots within some of the parking spaces that are not exactly perfect. If information happens to be on a parking space where their are more imperfections, it can sometimes be hard to read and takes several attempts. Just about every computer device will make several attempts automatically to read before it gives up and makes a log of it (the mis-read or mis-write) and the location it happens (the address).
    Every storage media (hard drive, floppy disc, SD or micro Card etc...) has an index of where everything is stored. When you delete anything, it really actually just removes it from the index file, not the actual packet of information.
    This would be like someone removing the keys and note log from a valet parking lot attendant booth and leaving the vehicle still there. The valet guys or gals say the vehicle is gone because the note log and key are gone. Well even the index file that tells the computer where every piece of information is stored, that file is its self parked in a parking spot with an address. If there is a read error there, the computer device could think the whole drive is now empty and will not boot up when turned on. This is also true for memory cards with photos and video. If the index sector or file gets damaged, the card could show needing to be reformatted as if it is new. Usually the photos and videos are still there 9 out of 10 times.
    Most devices have read errors but do not report them because on the repeated tries, it is able to read and it just goes on doing what it does. You usually only get a read error address notice if the event met the criteria to notify the user of the problem. If the read errors happen at an increased rate over time, it is best to get the device serviced. If your device is using any sort of inserted card or jump drive, sometimes it is that and not the devices main storage drive. Also a weak solder at a data ribbon port connection or a wire data ribbon its self wearing out can cause it.
    Sorry I wrote so much but now you know it is not serious, unless you notice it happening more often. I was born in 1966 and have been working with and on computers since I was about 16. I taught my oldest son to build his first computer when he was in 4th grade.

      +DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life i found it through just searching on youtube. yours will pop-up just like all the others.
      there arent really much doing sail vlogs that catches the eye in my opinion.
      I looked at you aerial channel, really some nice footage there but i would rather like to see the southern (more sunny) aerials of the world, but thats all a matter of taste.
      Also i would, if i were you, fuse those 2 channels to 1, so you get a nice mix of sailing and aerial footage in 1, again its personal.
      To leave a good note, your vlogs are in my opinion very well made if not one of the best, with background info and music fitting in really nice.
      But more sun and exotic beaches is more my style.
      Keep sailing!

    re the blackbox.exception codes. If you google it there are issues mentioned on Furunousaforum.com. One I saw mentioned had to do with turning tides/current info off after some time period to prevent the crash. There is no such thing as "port stern" or "starboard stern". It's port quarter or starboard quarter. Also, "astern" is dead behind and nowhere else. Try "Aft of the beam" or "behind" when you're trying to say "behind us". Finally, It's not "Hard alee". It's "Helm's Alee" as in "The helm is alee." I shouldn't really care about these trivialities except that I'm ADD and it distracts me.
