My DIY feather tree floor lamp

  • My very own version of the famous feather lamp using IKEA Kryssmast lamp.
    I created the tree trunk look using air-dry clay and then added gold leaf.
    I have since made another table version of the lamp and the whole (updated) process can be found here:
    For the tree trunk - • DIY tree trunk table l...
    For the feather lampshade - • DIY feather lampshade ...
    The bulb is encased within customised acrylic parts which include several stackable pieces of acrylic discs that serve as a base for the dome lampshade in which I screwed long rod coupling nuts as holders for the feathers.
    One of the main reasons I came up with this method of building the lampshade was to keep it safe - the bulb is housed inside the acrylic dome and separated from the feathers. No feathers come into contact with the bulb so there’s no fire-hazard, unlike other versions of the lamp out in the market. Another reason for using acrylic is since it is see-through, I can get away with using just one central bulb to light the whole tree, even for the floor lamp version where I used much bigger feathers.
    To map out the drill holes to better precision, I found this site to be very useful:
    monolithicdome.com/spherical-...
    NOTE: About the feathers
    I got my feathers from an e-commerce site that listed them as “artificial ostrich feathers”. This was my first time seeing such feathers up close so I couldn’t tell they were actually real feathers until a friend came to take a look and confirmed they’re real.
    By that time, the video had actually been done&posted. So while it said “faux feathers”, they’re actually not.

    I've watched several videos for this lamp and this is by the best result ever. Using a dome was a brilliant idea. Looks quite impressive. Congrats.

      You can watch my other making-of video for the table version of this lamp (part 1: tree trunk body). I taped the hanger(branch) tightly to the lamp before the clay process. You can use anything since the clay will hold it in place eventually. As long as you don’t pull on it after it’s done it should be fine. I hang my charging cable off it with no issues. If you want a firmer hold you’d probably want to reinforce it with glue before the clay process.

    Love the lamp, what size feathers did you use?

    • @cathair.stardust
      @cathair.stardust  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      These are 60-65cm but this was my first attempt and now i can say 50-55cm will be good enough for a big tree (table lamp I used 40+/-). The bigger the feathers are the harder to trim the thicker stems to fit into the coupling nuts holder (or you can use bigger sized holders but I’d rather not drill too big holes into the acrylic dome risking it to crack), and also the heavier they are the more they will droop as time goes by.

      @@cathair.stardust do you know what sizes you used?

    • @cathair.stardust
      @cathair.stardust  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kassiemontes5886 I used 4mm hole size but they are rather small for the stalk of the feathers so I had to trim the ends down to fit. I’d suggest going up to 5-6mm for big feathers or 5mm for smaller feathers if you’re doing a table lamp or slimmer floor lamp. Bear in mind the size will determine the drill hole size which is why I wouldn’t go too big either.

    • @cathair.stardust
      @cathair.stardust  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! You can try acrylic suppliers in your area. Or perhaps Amazon but they’ll probably be too expensive there. I’m in Asia (Singapore) so I custom mine directly from a factory through a Chinese site called taobao (similar to alibaba/aliexpress so you can try there). FYI the dome is actually the same size as what they use as windows for one of those astronaut pet carriers. For the base if you can’t find acrylic you can use wood or anything that you can make a hole in the middle and you’ll need enough to lift the dome the right amount so that it covers the whole bulb.

      I have 2 of this lamps that are switched on for hours every single night for more than 2 years now. Nothing caught fire.
      I did drill an extra hole in the dome for heat dissipation but that’s hardly needed as the surface of my LED bulb head doesn’t get hot at all.

    • @itschelsea

      Try Das air dry clay. I haven’t used mine yet but all the videos I watched showed it was one of the best versions available.

    • @cathair.stardust
      @cathair.stardust  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to really pack the clay tight to keep it there till it dries and minimise air pockets. It also helps to use double-sided tape before the clay to temporarily hold it in place while it dries (I did that for my next lamp which is shown in my other video). After the first round there will be some very tiny areas of chipping (which is mostly fine for a tree trunk anyway) so usually I add another day for some touch up/reinforcements before proceeding to the next step.
