I have many fond memories of playing Monopoly. It was the Queen of Games (Queen being a nod to its creator) for a long, long time. So I don't HATE it. But there are now so many games that work so much better in so many ways that I don't see any need to play, much less own, it.

Perhaps Monopoly has served a greater purpose in sparking new ideas for future game designs...

I don't LOVE Monopoly, but I do like it. But like you, it's probably never gonna be the first game I reach for. I mean, let's be real, there are loads and loads of better games in our cabinets. However, on that rarer occasion where someone actually wants to play it, I'm game.

I have a collection of over 150 board games, not even counting expansions. Monopoly is not among them and never will be. I hate that game with a passion. Like you said, the runaway leader and lack of any compensation for that makes it a slog at best. Typically, "playing" monopoly is only fun for the person getting good rolls, the rest can only sit there and watch it happen. It's just poor game design. I've heard a story once that its intended to be like that, as a case study into capitalism. Not sure about how true that is, though.
So no, monopoly is not fun and with so many good games available, I can't for the life of me understand why it keeps selling so we'll 🤷🏻‍♂️

lol "playing." It often feels like "watching" for the rest of the table huh. Maybe it is a metaphor for capitalism...
I have a hunch the game's success is less about its design and more about good marketing, contracts, etc. Parker Brothers was one of the first movers in US board games and they did a good job getting into every store that had a toy section. Add Hasbro acquiring them in '91 and their monopoly on board game isles became pretty strong "pun intended."
