    This is really great!!! Davy could sing anything - any type of song - and sing it well too!! From Broadway, to Pop, to Rock, to Country, and everything in between!! What a great talent he was!!! His comedy, his acting, his singing, his dancing, were all first rate!!! And his looks were a wonderful added bonus!!! Miss him...!!

    I love this video because I love Davy Jones.
    He is still so cute and I wish I knew him in real life.

    Great Video, never seen it, and also I did not know {no one pointed it out yet} that he sang this particular Nilsson song. I have Harry's record of it. Dave did a good job, even if he is smug now and then. I saw them in concert in 1996 and loved every minute of it. I would love to see the live vintage performance of "Someday Man" with Sam and the Goodtimers. Excellent video! **** The Beatles, The Monkees and Nilsson. Are my Favs!!!

    I loved David Steinberg and the Music Scene! I remember he had this giant king kong gorilla leg which was supposedly King Kong and the last show he was talking to it and he was making plans to meet with him in 10 years and he said "how will I know you? Don't worry! I'll know you by the way you hold yourself" I died laughing!

    "Davy Jones is as cute and poised as always, but the song lacks something in melody. "
    I was really looking forward to hearing Davy perform this as he has done great with prior Nilsson songs and this is one of my top10 Nilsson tunes. I think if you heard Nilsson's version you might agree -it's actually a lovely, hauntingly sad/romantic melody. Nilsson sings it smooth & seamlessly, with emotion. I think Davy got ahead of himself with his love for a great song, and doesn't have the voice for it.

    @kookooboy I think the discordant aspect is that this is a really challenging song to sing the way he's singing it.. at speed with lots of words to blast through with a hard charging band behind him... AND trying to dance his way through at the same time. It is said that some opera singer who tried to sing a Sinatra classic in his style would find themselves out of breath at the end of a phrase. similarly.. nilsson had a gift for writing songs that sound deceptively simple but hard to imitate.

    @creaturebotman There is actually a couple of references to the monkees in both of the first two Austin Powers movies. I know in the second one with Heather Graham, when they are outside and there is a display with Records for sale. Someone picks up the album More of theMonkees and purposely shows it to the camera.

    There should be a big video retrospective on the monkees and their solo times, I mean the Dick clark archives has a very great film of Davy singing the girl from chelsea, you only saw a very short clip of it on one of dick clark's specials

  • @creaturebotman
    @creaturebotman 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @shakwrig ....
    .
    Of course!
    Austin powers was all about the reference to the character in Austin Powers being of the area of "the British Invasion" in music of the 60's. The Monkees was the "American" answer to the answer two the Beatles. Yet they added Davey Jones British accent and all to the line up to give the flavor of what the girls craved for at the time. There is no doubt that they used Davey Jones as a reference to the character.

  • @LBrilliante
    @LBrilliante 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @blackmore4 british music hall links the greatest names in British rock.. Bowie, Mccartney, Townshend, and Davies.. you could see each of them in 1930s british top hat and tails singing their hearts out and yet each has an equally compelling alter ego as a hard rock icon! Davy seemed to excell at music hall arrangements like Daydream Believer or hard rock like Valleri!

  • @RevSpike
    @RevSpike 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    take a look at Mike singing "Love Is Only Sleeping" with the Monkees sometime - it IS THE Austin Powers suit! um - and it's the other way around - of course the Austin character was based on these old styles and fads.

    Both Jones and Bowie stated they were big Anthony Newley fans and both had artistic ambition that incorporated that influence. In late 60's interviews when asked about his own songs, Jones would offer the term 'Broadway-rock' and for his solo spots at Monkee shows he'd often do a Newley song.
    Bowie's '67 material was the best Anthony Newley album not by Anthony Newley! He still cites Newley as an influence.
    So, Newley is the key!

    Certainly.. when you think of a British person you might actually have met or known.. you'd think of Davy Jones or Paul McCartney or Patrick Mcnee.. you'd probably NEVER think of Sean Connery which is another reason Austin Powers is so funny. Imagine taking an average recognizable brit wearing, as some did in those years, extroverted extremely stylish 60s fashions.. with the bad teeth and awkward presentation. It's like that scene in A Hard Day's Night when George talks to the fashion guru!

    @rockisheaven not how i c it,or howDavy was 2wards the Monkees,his interviews he's never given reason to make 1 think he didnt like those days,he loved those days.sometimes he hasnt so kind 2wards his bandmates,but perhaps thats cos theyre close like bros (not so much with mike tho,none of them have really seen Mike except the '97 days) when you'v had a tiff with your 'siblings' u r abit indifferent towards them,at that time. '11 they enjoyed the tour,at leastDavy left with them being like bros.

    .
    Come on! Its sad he passed away. I grew up watching the Monkeys as a kid. The Monkeys were one of the first "manufactured" Boy bands. Talent, yes Sing? a little. Comedy? Yep. But SOUL? Look. just because he has a back up band with "Soul" brothers don't bring him even close to the sound of soul. If anything this particular song is "Soul-Less".Bland. Every Generation had its Justin Bieber. Jones never took himself seriously.
    .
    That's the hard facts.
    .
    R.I.P Dave Jones

    Now we know the inspiration for Austin Powers

  • @LBrilliante
    @LBrilliante 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @torresongs2 though Davy himself doesn't seem too pleased as he sings it. I think he might have wanted to do it a little slower. I just listened to Nilsson doing a performance of it.. kind of bland the way he did it but the pace was right.
    I too think it's sad that the end of the Monkees left the group adrift and then for the next 40 years Davy was never able to establish a new direction in the mainstream pop music world.

  • @ColeHan100
    @ColeHan100 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @creaturebotman What an ignorant remark. The inspiration for Austin powers was Michael Caine. I am not sure why Austin wound up looking like Peter Asher though.

    No offense to Mike Micky or Peter and its great that they all have good lives going for them but as for Davy handeling the Monkee fame with the least grace like I said no offense to the other three guys cause I like them all but as far as I have seen Davy is the only one who still performs Monkee songs at all of his concerts and when asked about it He doesnt bite fans or interviewers heads off when asked about that time in his life so I think he has handled with alot of grace.

    @ajp55a LOL.. true.. you could hear David Bowie doing this .. more than a few times he did british music hall flavored things always shot through with his outsized delivery and vocal quirks. Davy might have done well with another take of this performance it seems to get away from him.. a LOT of words, a complex vocal line, and a rather loud and energy filled arrangement by the band with a full complement of horns!

  • @torresongs2
    @torresongs2 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @42feenix Actually it's a very intricate and well-written song. I imagine that you must be very young and inexperienced in love. This song manages to capture the high and low points in a relationship in a very short song. There was a time when not all pop songs featured dull soulless dance beats and inane, meaningless lyrics. Do us all a favor and go drool over the latest piece of talentless drivel that Nikki Minaj has squatted out!

  • @rockisheaven
    @rockisheaven 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sure the Monkees have all had their share of ego problems. I mean, Micky is my favorite Monkee,and yet there are times that I've screamed at him, "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?" The difference is, I think that Mike, Peter and Micky have handled the Monkee legacy with more grace and poise than Davy has. Let me reiterate that I loved the guy in the 60s--it's what he's turned into that I hate.

So, was it all of the above, or do we not have any proof of any of those things listed above? DID Davy eat loads of bacon, DID he have heart problems run in his lineage? Oh--you're not sure? Well, that's okay. After all, you didn't KNOW any of them personally, or anything.
