    Insane that this interview was 34 years ago. They all still looked so young here, even Ali was able to speak pretty coherently. Holmes is the only one from this panel still alive…. May all these champs rest in peace. You will never be forgotten ❤️ 🕊️

    Muhammad Ali was always the star attraction. I am not saying that Joe Frazier and Ken Norton weren't good fighters because they were. When people came to see the Ali versus Frazier fights and the Ali versus Norton fights I would say that at least 90% of those people came to see Ali. Ali was the one who drew the crowds. Ali in his prime would have beaten Holmes no problem. Rest in peace Ken Norton. Rest in peace Joe Frazier. Rest in peace Muhammad Ali, the greatest of all time.

    5:40 One thing I always liked about Frazier is that he gave other people credit (with the exception of Ali and we all know why). He wasn't one of those guys that had to make excuses or talk down fighters that came after him. I always noticed that with the man. Even his losses to Foreman I never heard him say anything to excuse them...

    Joe was absolutely right when he spoke about Mike Tyson. He knew Holmes was being a little unfair to Mike and perhaps a little bitter being that Mike had nearly sent Holmes head into orbit just 1 year prior to this interview. But Joe got to see Mike Tyson up close and personal when he had to peel his son Marvis off the canvas in 1986.

    Ali was nearly 39 years old when he lost to Holmes, beat Fraizer twice, and beat Norton twice despite being significantly pasted his prime (he was 35 in their last fight). So even though he technically lost to everyone on the pannel, he had winning records against 2 of the 3 men and only a fool would give that Holmes fight any thought. A 1968 Ali would wipe the floor with Holmes without question. I would even say a 1975 Ali would beat him down (remember their fight was in October of 1980, a solid 9-10 years past Ali's prime). People need to get their facts straight before they try to put a champion down.

      Also the fact that Ali retired 2 years prior to the Holmes fight and only took the fight because he was offered 8 million for the fight and no one from his camp wanted him to turn it down because of the money. It was a fight that should never have taken place.

    • @c23e
      @c23e 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to love Ali as a kid but looking at him as an adult, Ali was not even the greatest in the heavyweight division let alone all time. Louis, Walcott and Marciano were equal to Ali in their prime but Ali might have given them a close run for their money and might have beaten Marciano because he had a style that suited Ali. Ali before 1969 was superb but still not the greatest but should have beaten Walcott but not Louis. Sugar Ray Robinson was the best of all time - just from the number of fights he had and the skill and punching power he displayed against all-comers. Ali knew how to use PR and publicity which got him tv time and pupularity. He had one dubious points decision in his prime but at least three dubious decisions after 1971.

    • @dreman1970
      @dreman1970 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      c23e How the hell would Louis beat a prime Ali??? He was a plodder....and all of Louis' contemporaries in his time were slow flat footed fighters.....First fighter he fought that had footwork was Walcott...and he struggled mightily...albeit Louis was past his prime....Louis would never catch him....A Young Louis got starched by Schmeling....THAT Louis would get annihilated by Ali....he would get KO'ed late...Louis didn't have the greatest chin....Walcott??? PUHLEASE...he was a smaller version of Ali....and less hand speed....

    • @c23e
      @c23e 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are talking about boxing - where anything can happen. If you look at the stats then Marciano was the best but I don't think he was - though he always got up from a knockdown and finished off the job. Louis was caught out by schmeling as an up and coming boxer.. Look at the difference between their first fight and the second. Fight one went 12 rounds but by the rematch schmeling could only last 1 round so shows how much Louis improved. Louis only lost that one fight in his prime and always came back against opponents. Ali after his return just did not have the speed and timing - that was his major strength. Frazier beat him easily in their first fight. Norton beat Ali all three times (and I never liked Norton). It is always a question of styles make fights - that's why Norton could last 39 rounds with Ali but only 1 with Foreman or Shavers or Cooney. Ali would have struggled against a prime Walcott but would have gone either way. I haven't even mentioned the likes of Jack Johnson who was unbeaten in his prime and only lost when he was an old man fighting more than 40 rounds. Ali was great but not the greatest. Unfortunately we live in an age of hype where those who generate the publicity and can be funny and entertaining are rated higher than they deserved. Ali used to pour scorn on Louis saying how he ended up a broke bum - but look what happened to Ali. And he got ripped off by the great crook Don King, not once but time and again and ended up broke. Ali was not even a good man - look at how he treated Frazier (even after Frazier helped him out financially when he was broke; he cheated on all his wives; and followed the warped teachings of elijah muhammed and betrayed Malcolm X. Given all the power and fame and wealth that Ali had, he could have achieved so much more. We should be arguing about what great educational establishments he helped set up etc It's hard trying to place fighters out of their time and era against other fighters 9 who are often different sizes and weights) but you can only really look at them in their own era and see what they achieved.

    • @dreman1970
      @dreman1970 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      c23e I understand all of that...but every fight of alis u brought were AFTER his exile...which wasn't a prime ali. The first fight with schmeling was VERY close to louis' prime. And as far as the post exile ali...he wasn't as fast....but he was a stronger fighter. The 74 ali that beat foreman to me was almost as good as the late 60s ali...as far as walcott...he didn't even hit as hard as ali...wasn't as fast...and was 20 pounds LIGHTER....with about a 5-6 inch reach disadvantage. Which means he would have to come to ali in order to hit him...and that wasn't his style..if they stayed on the outside walcott has no way of touching ali. Listen louis was a great fighter....one of the greats of time. But as u kinda said..styles makes fights. Go back and watch the fighting styles of every fighter louis fought in his prime. They all had one thing in common....STATIONARY TARGETS. The ali of 66-67 ( reference Cleveland williams)...would have too much hand speed and foot movement.

      I said that because, Ken Norton was a relatively obscure boxer until he upset Ali. Ken had a very average career and didn't do a lot apart from beating Ali. Ken never won the WBC title it was awarded to him, and lost that title in his first defence. All this means was Norton had Ali's number and that's his claim to fame.

    Four of the greatest fighters ever who fought in the most competitive time in boxing history. They're only missing George Foreman. Agree with Larry, any four of them could have beaten Tyson in their prime. Foreman too.

    As soon as Bryant Gumbel mentions the other fighters in Muhammad Ali's shadow, you can instantly see Joe Frazier ready to take offense, and Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton knowing full well that that's about to happen.
    Ali immediately tries to stop that line of questioning, but his Parkinson's makes him too slow. Then Joe cuts him off and wants to set Bryant Gumbel straight that he ain't in nobody's shadow. After that, Norton tries to intervene. They all know that telling Joe Frazier that he is in Muhammad Ali's shadow is a sure way to immediately piss Frazier off.

    There were many great fights between these gentlemen The one between Norton and Holmes where Norton hit Holmes with a combination I believe the 13th round was spectacular Holmes had a jaw.Tyson in his prime would have been favored he was a bigger two handed Joe Frazier .George Foreman would have had the best chance because of his height and punching power

    The reason Holmes didn't lose to anyone on that panel is that he was too young to fight them in their primes. By the time he hit his prime, they were old. Lucky for him.

    All of them are legend,all of them are great and maybe there is not a greatest. But honestly without hating or loving someone, wasn't boxing become more popular, enjoyable and exciting to watch for all the people around the world in its golden ages,60,70s mostely because of one of them? Weren't all of them become more famous and recognizable because of fighting that man, apart from winner or loser ? Good or bad ,wrong or right we still arguing and enjoying those fights,interviews,and talks mostly because of hating or loving a man with an unorthodox style in boxing,unusual promoting and nice or ugly talking and acting with a big mouth .A man who gave the world different image of boxing and boxers,a man with a long shadow,a man who talked too much.
