‘We’re giving up a strategic asset for no reason’ - Bob Seely on the Chagos Islands

  • The United Kingdom will shortly be ceding sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. Under the terms of a new treaty, there will be a 99-year-lease for Diego Garcia, the tropical atoll used by the US government as a military base. It follows two years of negotiation over the strategically important cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean. Both sides have vowed to finalise the treaty as quickly as possible.
Will Britain come to regret the decision? How will this affect other British Overseas Territories, like the Falklands? Political correspondent James Heale is joined by Bob Seely, security expert and former member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Jonathan Powell at it again… From a purely defence point of view it’s disastrous and if you consider the equivalence of the islands in Royal Navy terms, it’s easily two carrier groups worth of capability gone in one fell swoop. This is right up there with giving the Soviet Union the Rolls Royce Nene jet engine.

I live in the US. I have lived in India and have set up US offshore companies in Mauritius. The Indians have complained about the US base at Diego Garcia, but they ignore us because we are just the organ grinder's monkey. I despair at the cluelessness of the British political media class and their desperation to appear relevant, mainly to each other. Diego Garcia is the only inhabited island in the group. We gave that to the Americans. They are not going to leave. They will make sure their base stays operational and nobody gets too close. The US has bases in Syria and Iraq which they have been told to close and they ignore the requests. The CIA and the State Department will put pressure on the Mauritius government to play ball. We are irrelevant and do not influence the US and Mauritius. Mauritius is a tax haven and American companies are already given tax advantages to set- up shop there. Tourism and financial services are two of the biggest industries. Thanks to Tories like this twit, Britain no longer has a navy. Why does he think the Americans will let China set up a base near Diego Garcia? The Americans don't want us there either and are happy to deal directly with Mauritius.

You're not going to find many labour voters here. Their share of the vote didn't change between 2019 and 2024. Conservatives voters fell away because of the over-reaction to covid, mass immigration and national debt and spending getting out of control. There's no pendulum anymore. It just doesn't exist.

The recapture gof the Falklands won Britain the respect of the world; even in Argentina. Countries, some, may envy, may mock, may chafe in anger and resentment - but they recognise the strength of will and the determination of countries that defend what is theirs and have some self-respect. You can hardly expect to receive respect from others if you don't respect yourself. But Lammy isn't in Britain's corner, is he? He's the Foreign Secretary in a sense we need to realise, with an emphasis on the 'foreign' part.
