Hi Miranda…. I've been chortling my way through August's Comfort Book Club choice - loving All Creatures Great and Small. So many hysterical, laugh out loud moments. A delightful summer read. Thank you for all the work you do to share these great videos with us. Hello to your mom, Donna. Happy Sunday! Bren xo

Dear Miranda, I just finished "The Greengage Summer" and now I would like to read more of Rumer Godden. I am currently reading "A House for all Seasons", the Comfort Book Club Choice for November. I am truly enjoying it and learning a lot of new vocabulary. In September I will read "A Fortnight in September" which I just purchased at Persephones Books in Bath which was a lovely experience. All these reads were of course inspired by you and I am very grateful for that. I'm having a wonderful time in London right now and therefore didn't have time to watch your video until now, which was strange because usually I watch it as soon as it is published. I would like to thank you again for all of your fabulous work, you have had a profound impact on my reading life since I've found your channel. I hope you will have a quieter time this week and I'm excited for all the upcoming things in September and October. Have a lovely week!🤩

Thank you so much for your very generous support, Inga! It's so sweet of you, and I really appreciate it!! ❤️ I'm so happy to hear you're having a lovely time book shopping around the UK! The Fortnight in September is such a special book and a perfect late summer / early autumn holiday read. Enjoy the rest of your time in the UK! 📚 🌟

Miranda, I adore your out and about videos, but I could listen to you talk about books for ever. So eloquent and knowledgeable, I, one hundred percent trust your recommendations. You're always spot on. Dear me, talk about pressure.... None intended. After giving your new blog post a read, I bought a copy of The Agency for Scandal which I can't wait to begin later. I think I shall try and get to The Swiss Summer by Stella Gibbons next.

I had heard a lot about James Herriot but never read him. I started All creatures great and small last week and am absolutely loving it. Each chapter end finds me chuckling with the denouement of each little story. So much humour! ❤

Miranda, What a wonderfully eclectic selection of books you presented. I'm 20 pages away from finishing "The Thread Collectors" which takes place during the American Civil War. It is beautifully written story of the friendship between a runaway slave and a Jewish musician who have joined the Union Army and the women they love during this very difficult time in US history. I have both "The Greengage Summer" and "All Creatures Great and Small" lined up as my next reads (very excited about reading both). Hope you are enjoying a calmer week and some sunshine in Yorkshire! 🌞

What a great list of recommendations! The Jane and May Morris biography sounds really intriguing. Several years ago I saw an exhibit at Dovecot Studios in Edinburgh called May Morris Art & Life. Her art was gorgeous and I’m really glad I got to see the exhibit. It is surprising sometimes to reread a book and have a completely different reaction to it the second time around. There is a really good quote about this from Clifton Fadiman. He is specifically referring to classics, but I think it could really apply to just any book: “When you reread a classic you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than there was before.”

    • @MirandaMills
      @MirandaMills  ปีที่แล้ว +1

All of this inspired me to suggest The Greengage Summer for a little book group I'm in with friends. I read TOM LAKE and enjoyed it very much. Ann Patchett is a wonderful writer. TOM LAKE does mainly take place during a summer on a Michigan cherry farm. Covid has resulted in the owners' three daughters returning home. The girls want the full scoop on their mother's stint playing Emily in Thornton Wilder's OUR TOWN opposite a man who later becomes a famous movie star. I've never been disappointed by Patchett, and this book is no exception. I had planned to read THUNDERCLAP next, but I've decided on THE HEAVEN AND EARTH GROCERY STORE instead.

I was surprised by how young she is considering all she has written. I've started reading Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn and am really enjoying it so far. Thank you for all your recommendations! For those interested in unusual food books I would like to recommend one of my all time favourite books “Lilla’s feast” by Frances Osborne. “Lilla’s Feast spans the world from China to India and finally to England over a hundred years, and blends together personal history, world events, period atmosphere and family anecdotes into a brilliantly vibrant and poignant story.” While in a Japanese civilian camp in China during WW2 Lilla compiled a book about food - now in possession of the Imperial War Museum. Frances Osborne, the author is Lilla’s great granddaughter. Fiona

My first 3 reads for August are catching up on my fantasy. I started the month with The Burning God, which is the final book in The Poppy War trilogy. As of today, I just finished Stephen King's Bag of Bones, which is a ghost story set at a lake house in Maine, and I'm currently reading The Sapphire Altar, the sequel to The Bladed Faith by David Dalglish. I plan to also read John Adams by David McCullough and maybe Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

I know fantasy isn't your go-to, but you may really enjoy "A Psalm for the Wild-Built" by Becky Chambers. It's very short, and just makes you feel good, and the fantasy elements aren't the thrust of the story; it is very much a character-based story.

A Long Way to Verona. There's a bit in the last quarter or so of the book (I think! It's been a whille! 🙂) when the young protagonist is going through the books on the shelves of the library that is genuinely hilarious - the bit about George Eliot! 😂 And I'm someone who often struggles with humour in book. Gardam does a good job in this one. ☺ Hope you enjoy it.
I remember watching the All Creatures Big and Small television series as a child - I used to love it! I've read the first book in the series many moons ago - maybe I should revisit it on audiobook. Happy Reading!

Lovely to see and hear about your summer reading plans. Jane Gardam and Ann Patchett are two of my favorites. Since I'm new to your videos I don't know if you've mentioned Angela Thirkell in the past, but I think of her August Folly now, another one of her witty Barsetshire series. Right now I'm reading The Past by Tessa Hadley, set in summer in the Somerset countryside and liking it very much. Thank you for all your excellent presentations.

Happy Sunday, Miranda! Excellent recs, as always. Based upon your rec, I read The Owl Service last month (as well as watched the old mini series here on YT) and found it to be such a unique read. Very immersive of time and place, and I can see how it inspired future middle grade and YA stories with similar themes. I'm currently still working on some of my Christmas in July reads such as the nonfiction Christmas in America and Valancourt's Victorian Christmas Ghost Stories (I just love a spooky ghost story on a hot Summer night by candlelight!). Also read The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier, which certainly fit the creepy gothic vibe as well. Hope you have a wonderful, less chaotic (I can certainly relate, as it's been a hectic time my way as well) week ahead with lots of reading with Ms.Donna and cozy cups of tea (coffee for Donna haha!) 📚🫖🩶

Hi Miranda! Always a pleasure to see you every Sunday, regardless if there is lot's of content or not. I'm presently reading The Reading List (both in audible and physical form) and loving it!!! So I got SO excited when you showed the new book ,The Twilight Garden, by the same author. It's an automatic buy for me LOL. Except it will only be out in April 2024 where I live (Montreal, Canada). So a long time to wait. 🙂 Enjoyed all your book recommendations! Have a wonderful week!

Thank you Miranda for your very interesting talk on books for an August read. I too will be listening to 'The Murder at the Vicarage' that I have just ordered from audible via your link, it sounds like a good tale. I decided this month to reread Mary Queen of Scots by Eric Linklater which is non fiction. I have read a few books about Queen Mary in the past and bought this one from my local bookshop. Eric Linklater details the trails and tribulation of Mary's life with illustrative precision. It is just one hundred and twelve pages long yet it really is interesting with words from Bothwell and a French poem by Mary, I am looking forward to revisiting this wee gem of a book. Your blog is beautiful!

Thank you, Miranda. I love the sound of Four French Holidays. The seasonal reading is trickier in the southern hemisphere -- I find it hard to decide whether to go with the calendar or the sun! Thank you, Miranda for all these amazing recommendations. I am going to have to buy The Twilight Garden for starters - the cover is gorgeous! It was good to be reminded that I must read All Creatures Great and Small this month. The Everlasting Cookbook sounds wonderful, as does Four French Holidays. I loved Greengage Summer when I read it in my early teens but haven't read it since. I want to find a second hand copy of The Dud Avocado, and also The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets, which Laura Wood mentioned in the interview, and which I very much enjoyed reading. Thanks for the link in your newsletter to the Mary Oliver poem, by coincidence, about ten minutes before I looked at your email, I had been dipping into her 'Dog Songs'. I love her evocative poetry and prose. I hope you have a good week.

Hi Miranda - you have an ambitious reading list, especially as you are so busy right now! I have Tom Lake on my August reading list too. Ann Patchett is one of my favourite authors and I can't wait to read my signed special edition! Currently on book 2 of Jane Gardam's trilogy about 'Old Filth' and so interested in the title you shared by Jane Gardam. It's ages since I read the Greengage Summer but maybe I should reread, especially as I will be making greengage jam from our bumper crop this year! You've inspired me and I've just found my copy.

Hello. I love the book cover of Rosaline (& the plot idea). I watched* the 2022 film, Rosaline and LOVED it. It is the story of Romeo & Juliet also told from Rosaline's perspective. Mini Driver plays a memorable and entertaining Nurse. The lead, Kaitlyn Dever, is excellent in the role of Rosaline. I hope you and Donna will try it, if you have not already! Happy August to you both.

So many wonderful books🥰if I only pick up one, it would have to be Greengage Summer, and then followed up with Four French Holidays. One of the most wonderful things to happen to me has been learning about Rumer Godden and reading her books thanks to you and the comfort book club. I immediately fell in love with her writing and I would most likely have never heard of her without you. I don’t have any special reading plans for August but I am starting to feel the pull to dark academia for September. I have four books lined up already and will try and fill in with a few more likely. I’m on the fence with James Herriot. While I’m sure I would love the writing, I avoid most animal books because there’s almost always the sad parts, part of nature and all that, but they rip my heart out. Especially dogs and horses. I guess I have to list this as a content warning for myself. So most likely I’ll have to skip the read, but not the book club chat with you and Donna. No trigger warning there😊. Hope you have a wonderful week ahead.

Mum and I completely understand! Hope you're having a lovely start to the week! ❤️📚

Good morning, I as well like all think Agatha Christie . I just started a new book by Andrew Wilson , A Talent For Murder . It has been so far lots of fun . The book is about when Mrs. Christie disappeared during her marriage problems with Colonel Christie. It is mix with truth and fiction. A Dr. kidnaps her and threatens to hurt her daughter physically and her husband’s reputation. He wants her to Murder his wife . The Doctor chooses her because of her expertise on poisons from her time as a nurse in the military. He also is the Doctor to the woman that her husband is having an affair with. I am not finished yet but I am enjoying it so far. Maybe you might like it as well. Thank you for all your suggestions of other books to read .
