  • The event is hosted in 1 RSME Regiment and gives the station an opportunity to thank those within the local community and further afield, who have generously supported the Corps, station and families. Unfortunately, this years event had to be broadcast remotely, due to the ongoing pandemic risks.
The ceremony of Beating Retreat originates from the early years of organised warfare, when the drum was used for all signals on the battlefield.
The Khukuri Pattern was introduced in 2019 by Master Rastra Rai, building on the Khukuri Dance. The Khukuri Pattern focuses more on the Close Combat elements of the Brigade of Gurkhas, than the Khukuri Dance.
Hurrah for the CRE was adopted officially as the song of the Corps of Royal Engineers in 1924. It originated among Sapper units during the South African War of 1900. Its words are partly in English and partly in Zulu. The Zulu words are a complaint that there is too much work, too little food and the wages are too low, so we are leaving!
The band of the Brigade of Gurkhas was raised in November 1859 as part of an Indian Army Gurkha Regiment called the Sirmoor Rifle Regiment.

When I was working for the UN in Lebanon about 10 years ago, there was a senior staff member from Sudan who remembered, as a child, the statue of Gordon in it’s original place in Khartoum.
