lOVE THIS VIDEO IT WAS SO HELPFUL! I was trying to understand these five components and you broke this apart very well. It's crazy but you are the first person i ever took the time to write a comment lol. More videos like this would be amazing and thank you!!
I'm not sure what the transfer process would be like but there are some overlapping classes so that may transfer over to the other degree. I do think that the two fields are different enough that you would have to learn different skill sets to be successful, though.
Yes, you definitely can. But remember that counseling is more therapeutic in nature (literal counseling sessions) and School Psy is more professional in nature: assessments, prevention work, interventions, consultations, etc. You could definitely do therapy still but that’s not the top of your list anymore. My M.Ed is in Counseling so I get it. And now I’m going my PsyD in School Psy.
@@denisseDenyDeni Hi! I have a BSc in psychology and i would like to get a psyD but im interested in counseling. If i get a masters in counseling can i go straight for a PsyD after??
@@aboas4gambles602 Hi Ali! Yes you can definitely get your Master's in counseling and then continue to your PsyD. If you feel like you'll end up getting your PsyD intentionally apply to progams that have BOTH options available (Masters and doctoral level), and if you are in the USA make sure it's APA Accredited. You can go into the APA accredited program list by going to the APA website (American Psychological Association) and looking at what programs are accredited. Accreditation is super important, unless you are 1000000% sure you plan to never move from the state you are currently living in. You can email me with more questions as well: counseling.ochoa@gmail.com
@@denisseDenyDeni thank you so much! I appreciate your help☺️ i live in Kuwait but i got my bachelors in the states and I’m planning on continuing in the states as well. Hopefully ill be moving back to Kuwait after I’m done but i think its still important to go somewhere thats APA accredited.
Thank you! How do you provide these assessments to students who do not speak English? This is my current gripe. I asked in my PsyD program and they told me “you can’t”. I feel it’s not inclusive at all.
this is a HOT topic in the school psych community and something that I personally feel is still a work in progress. There are bilingual assessments for languages like spanish and people who are specially trained to give bilingual assessments. There are also translators or interpreters that can be used during testing or nonverbal assessments for ELL students. The biggest problem about these assessments is the cultural loading and bias even if a test claims to be bias free... More assessments in various languages would be one way to tackle the issue (but i'm sure it's expensive to create and difficult to find bilingual school psychologists)
Hi Tiffany! I’m really happy I found your channel, your videos are super helpful! In 2017 I did first year journalism, then took a gap year while attempting a child care course, then started 2nd year journalism and realised it wasn’t for me..I started a teaching assistant course and finish that soon, and I’m actually transferring from my creative writing bachelor to the BA Psychology! I’m getting all of my previous credits transferred, but overall I’ve bounced around a bit to figure out what I’ve wanted to do!! I’m tossing between a school psychologist and a clinical specialist with children, but I’m wondering what I’ll be qualified for if I complete the graduate diploma and not the masters? Thank you !
it's great that you're able to transfer all of your credits! For all psych fields, you will need a minimum of a master's to have a career... A lot of people will pursue a Ph.D. but for some psych fields, a masters will suffice.
Hey! I have a school psych student vlog on my channel from first semester (you can find in the playlist or on my channel)! I can definitely make another for my second year, though :D
Hey! Very informative Video :) I was just wondering if you knew how a school psychs role varies when working at either elementary, middle, and high school? Do the number of assessments one does change depending on this? Thank you 😊
Hi Nancy! The number of assessments definitely change as you switch schools. I believe the bulk of comprehensive assessments are done in elementary schools... while high schools may have around 10 per year. In my area (northern VA), there has been a shift towards mental health and prevention for middle and high school recently (so probably more counseling and psychoeducation)
Love your videos! Always learn something new. I just started the MSW program this fall and wanted to know if you know the difference between school social workers vs school psychologist. Thanks!
although both fields may give counseling, school social workers help students and families interact with the community and generally write reports about social birth histories. Psychologists, on the other hand, administer psychological testing and write reports about the evaluation. I would love to interview a social worker for my channel!
@@TiffanyLee Thanks so clarifying. It sounds like psychologist are more brian people while social workers are more social people, if you get what I mean. And yes, I would love to be interviewed on your channel once I get that MSW degree!
Hi this is super random. I was wondering if you had any recommendations on school backpacks. I know some professors will require textbooks and i want something adult looking but that will last. Also any recommendations on scholarships/grants. .
Hey!! I would love to make a video about what's in my bag or grad school essentials :D I alternate between a black backpack or leather tote bag. My madewell tote is super sturdy and really minimalistic which makes it perfect for school and work. It's a bit pricey but it's great quality and worth it IMO!
I'm still currently a student but I had my practicum in elementary schools last year and it was a lot of fun! Lots of assessments, meetings, and consultation.
I’m going back to your videos now that I’m in year 2 of grad school! They’re so good and they make a lot more sense now hahaha.

Can u get a masters in counseling first and then decide later if you want go the school psych route? I am having a hard time choosing between the two

Did the school you applied to look at both your GRE verbal and quantitative score?or just mostly verbal..
Yes, they looked at both but my program weighed prior experiences and potential more than test scores.
How long are the reports you have to write after evaluations?
Short reports are 3-5 pages. Longer, clinical reports are an upwards of 40-50 (insane!)
Do you work with mostly middle and high schools or elementary? And what is it like?
I'm still currently a student but I had my practicum in elementary schools last year and it was a lot of fun! Lots of assessments, meetings, and consultation.
Do you deal a lot with numbers?
it depends... You may need to score assessments and analyze data but they're typically simple computations and statistics
Could I get a masters in Educational psych and work as a School Psychologist?
probably not :( from what I've seen, ed psych is mostly research or higher ed.
