DoGard didn’t let Bobby just go. They held his salary and race winnings they owed him. Bobby has said he believes the Gardners did this to get rid of him because they were losing tons of money and couldn’t afford him. Bobby sued them for breach of contract, but they kept it tied up in court until after Bobby’s career ending injury and he had to settle for pennies on the dollar.
Miller went with Bobby because the sponsorship deal was with Bobby and not with DiGard.
Sadly, Bobby wasn’t the only Allison screwed by DiGard. The cars they used when Donnie raced for them were ones that he had built and owned. However, his contract said if he was to leave under any circumstances, they would keep the cars. They fired him and replaced him with DW. It was because he had a sponsor and Donnie didn’t.

Some of Booby's 70's wins was with Charlie Wright , my grandfather. He worked 13 years with Bobby leaving in December 1979 and went to work for a texan named Curtis Payne and won the 1980 Arca 200 at Daytona as crew chief. Then he opened RPM Enterprise a race car parts store in Hueytown, where I have lived all my 47 years. He sold it in the 90's and passed away 5 years ago at 90, still working 40 hours a week at Hueytown Hardware until 2 months before passing.

@@davidreece5867 my grandfather called him "Sir Allen". I worked there for about a year back in 96. My grandfather was the little short older man that opened the store each morning. Charlie Wright.

That car belonged to Greg Sacks he ran the Daytona 500 with it and DiGard leased it from him .

That car won the 1984 Dayton 500 with Cale Yarbrough, Sacks bought the car from Ranier racing at the end of 84, Ranier switched to Ford for 85

Junior Johnson proved the 2 car concept was viable. He did it with Waltrip and Bonnett in the 80s. DIGard is notoriously shady. However, Allison is also known to be a pain in the ass. So imo everyone involved was likely to blame.

Bobby's hardheadedness cost him wins and championships.

Great video! I forgot that the DiGard team was sold to Bob Whitcomb. Here's something a bit ironic about that. Sacks got his first win in a car numbered 10. So did Cope and both at the same track.

I had the pleasure of growing up during a great time in Modified racing. So many great drivers during that era. Richie Evans, Bouchard's, Bodine's, Fullers, The Reg and of course Sacks. Many of them made their way into Cup racing. Unfortunately, the modified division has somewhat fallen on hard times and only Ryan Preece has been able to make it there.

If Allison would've stayed with Roger Penske or Junior Johnson theres no telling his many Championships HD could've won

I believe if Davey had lived and raced a few more years then we would mention the Allison's more when we talk about greats. Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt both have sons that kept their legacies alive by mentioning it often.

Its easy to see the Ford advantage. The front end of the GM cars is veautiful but, its shaped like a brick. While the Fords have roubded boses and the fastback glass at the rear is an amazing advantage over the flat GM glass.

Cool post. 1 questionable comment though….”multicar teams had little success up to this point”. Keikhafer. 😮. Pettys with the 41,42,43,44 cars.Nichels. Holman & Moody. Junior with the 11 &12. Fox. K&K. Friedkin. DePaulo. Stroppe. Schwam. This is in regards to a single race, hence i could cite many many more successful 2 or more car teams throughout NASCAR history.

Excellent point. Poor choice of words on my part. Should've been more specific on the timeframe, and acknowledge that during this time in the 80's Junior Johnson was having success with a 2 car team. In the first edit I went in depth on JJ multi car team, but it got cut and replaced with the Darrell Waltrip clip. Thanks for the feedback.
