    How many feet apart is the vertical steel and how many corses are the bond beams ? Will that entire wall be filled solid ?

    I bet I've watched the 12" block video a hundred times in preparation for a DIY job I did similar to this wall. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos to demonstrate how "smooth is fast".
    I've got two questions - (1) I've seen people lay the bond beam block with the opening facing down, as you're doing here, and with the opening facing up. Does the orientation make any real difference? (2) Do you buy your mortar pre-packaged or do you have a preference on plc vs masonry cement?

    • @SolidworksUnlimited
      @SolidworksUnlimited  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you sir, the only time you have to flip them upside down is if the engineer calls it out specifically. I buy it pre-packaged and I only use type s even if it's not structural.

    What size, style and brand trowel would you recommend a man starting out laying block? I have years of experience with stucco trowels and mortar mixes but I'm interested in learning how to lay these blocks.

      Most people start with a12 in trowel, I personally prefer a rose 13 inch trowel, but it's all personal pref just pick one that has a good balance and feel to it. Home depot trowels are total junk, steel is soft handles are junk, I'd go with w rose, Marshalltown, maybe goldblatt

  • @LF12468
    @LF12468 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Which shape trowel for a beginner? I'm seeing: narrow London, wide London, and Philadelphia shapes. Thank you sir

    Years ago I worked as a hod carrier for a short time and the mason I worked for always used the handle to tap the block to string line while I notice some used the trowel edge like this video shows. He said its all preference but he didn't like the nicks on the trowel edge.

    • @SolidworksUnlimited
      @SolidworksUnlimited  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you buy a w rose trowel there will be no nicks, I can swing my trowel pretty aggressively at the top of a rebar and it will only make a tiny nick.

    I'm wanting to lay my own block for a garage foundation. Do I need the vertical rebar tied and poured into the footer or do you drill it in when you start block? My local code says number 4 ever corner and every 4 feet. What's your opinion thanks?

    • @SolidworksUnlimited
      @SolidworksUnlimited  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would definitely stab the rebar in the concrete , drilling only if there's no other options. If your using 8x8x16 block, just measure in 4 inches from the edge of your block to start your layout so your rebar lands in the middle of the cells.

    Hi, great work as always!
    I read in one of the threads that you use premixed mortar, do you have a preferred pre-mix type S? I had a repair job a month back at my house and the type S that I bought really seemed dry and not very easy to work with…. not creamy or sticky.

    • @SolidworksUnlimited
      @SolidworksUnlimited  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Type s premix mortar quick crete, or spec mix just add water for the right consistency

      Ever hear of a scaffold manufacturer by the name of Titan? Got a price from them on 6 sections and they were about $1,000 cheaper than biljax. Have no idea on the quality. Sounds to good to be true. What manufacturer do you prefer?

    • @SolidworksUnlimited
      @SolidworksUnlimited  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know titan made masonry scaffolding, I thought they were more of a light duty scaffolding company primarily aluminum, I like the non stop brand it holds up better than most, the cranks are strong too. Only set back is one speed, so when empty it still moves slow.
