Nice tips! Did you do a video before on how to improve breathing? I’ve been trying long tones but I always seem to really feel breathless. Do you think this also has to do with my asthma as well?

It's so nice to see another asthma clarinet player haha, have you found breathing excercises?

How do you decide that it's better to stop a current practice session? I feel like I probably go on too long sometimes and get increasingly frustrated because things aren't improving, but I don't want to stop until it improves. Sort of a vicious cycle.

I’m a 4 year clarinet player and I’d say as a clarinet player u always want to make things so perfect that u won’t take a break bcuz u don’t wanna stop until it’s perfection. TAKE A BREAK! The more u keep playing and get frustrated the more u won’t get it. When u start fresh after a break it’ll help u improve more. So please take a break 😇

That's a good question... If I feel like I have exhausted all my creative practice ideas and my brain is tired, I will either take a break, work on a smaller chunk, or move on to something else. I'm sure other viewers have other thoughts to add here too!

If i get to the stage when i am not improving, i usually move on to another part of the music to give my brain something new to work on..then i take a break

      hello,
my teacher told me to leave the piece i'm working on for few days and then take it back. i did that and it worked. sometimes it's good to let your brain have rest !
she also teached me - (for very difficult fingering passages-) set the métronome at 40 bpm. if you have, for example, 3 beats of 16th notes very difficult.
      start with the last beat.
(A ) each 16th note at 40 bpm. don't blow in your clarinet. Just the fingering, and focus on the fingering !! be sure your arms and fingers are relaxed ! you don't want tension in your shoulders, arm, hand, fingers ! do this several times, until you know perfectly the finger's moves beetwen each notes. don't allow any mistakes. Then
      (B) now you blow in the clarinet, always at 40 bpm each note. always relax (also embouchure) focus on sound and fingers. you'll get the music in your brain. when it's OK (several times) then
      (C) : play this passage faster, but easy, not to fast ! you can change the rythm if you want (ex : short-long or long-short).
now it's OK for the last beat !
Do the same ( A, B C) for the 2nd beat AND the 3rd (yes ! the one you just finished ! ).
when it's done, do the same (A B C). you just add the first beat to the 2nd and 3rd beats.
i hope i'm clear ! (sorry for my english).
don't forget to play this the following days, to be sure to activate your memory/brain.
I do this every time i have a really difficult passage and it always works ! i remember i was struggling in martinu sonata, there was one bar i couldn't play ! whatever i was doing. my teacher told me that and waw ! i could play it !!!

maybe try playing something fun at the beginning and near the end of your practice, to get you in the mood and some pallet cleansers to finish it off....
