Unlike the other Joestars, Jotaro is grounded & has made waves not only through his influence but through presence too. He’s someone you always knew would make the right choice, to stay alive & overcome the odds.
It’s why Part 6 hits so hard because the feeling was still there until… He revealed his love for Jolyne, his daughter. The moment he showed vulnerability like that, is when that “Will he survive?” feeling finally caught up to him.

  • @CaptainDV

I think araki himself said something along the lines of, jotaro is a serious seemingly emotionless character, but that's because he needs to be. One of Jotaro's greatest strengths is being able to stay cool and level-headed in the midst of danger and the possibility of death. In the episode where children has to beat the Stan user at poker and then a video game, he made a gamble so insane, even Joseph wouldn't have been able to do it with a serious face. Joseph was completely surprised by jotaro's trickery here, but it was only possible due to jotaro's serious nature.

I think thats why Araki personally favors Part 4. If anything he really pushed the theme of “anyone can be unlucky”. Even though the cast of main and support characters is massive comparatively it felt genuine that anyone could accidentally find Kira, with no backup, and lose.

    • @thedregking9410

omg sorry if this is such a surprised since you commented a year ago but this is such an underrated comment... in part 3 when he was 17 his decision based more on rational thinking and acheiving his goal of victory but as time goes on, he grew older and more mature (?) and you can see his decisions have more feelings based into it (idk if it makes sense lol) but basically like you said, which is why he tends to lose fights more and more and rely more on other characters, showing more of his weak points instead of the guy he was being presented as in part 3... hence why pucci said 'your daughter is your biggest weakness' and died saving his daughter instead of stopping pucci. your comment is so underrated omg

Something that Part 3 introduced to the series was a feeling of “How will the hero win?” We’re confronted with an ability that starts in a strong position against the Joestar, and the Joestar has to find away to use their ability in a clever way to win. However, I think to do that, Araki had to step back a bit from the stakes, so Jotaro couldn’t die, but he could at least still lose. In Part 4, he brings the stakes back to help with the “How will they get out of this” feeling.

"The thought that Jotaro could lose wasn't on the table" is honestly something that I feel encapsulates the feeling of Jotaro for me so much. We all know that at the end of the part, the main villain has to lose in some way Dio's head is trapped with Johnathan at the end of Part 1, Kars is left to drift in space at the end of Part 2 after all his allies had died, DIO had been defeated at the end of Part 3, Kira was trapped in wherever those hands took him, and Diavolo is dealing with Requiem's punishment. But excluding Part 3, those all came with some indication that there was that nagging feeling that the protagonist _could_ have lost. Dio's defeat at Johnathan's hands came with Johnathan's sacrifice. Joseph lost an arm and was crashing down from the atmosphere. Josuke had been impaled by debris, and Giorno was literally fated to die by Epitaph. It just didn't feel like that was on the table for Jotaro. There was no opponent that could beat him that one of his other allies could beat. All the enemies faced in Part 3 felt like someone that Jotaro could have beaten. The only exception being Death 13, but that was because he wasn't aware that he was being attacked.

This is one of the things that make me like part 3 and Jotaro even more. In the other parts, the protagonists felt like underdogs. They barely scraped together a victory in some cases. But with Jotaro? I didn’t have to stress about my favourite character being in danger or dying.
When Joseph went up against Kars, you wonder if he can really do it. This is a common scenario. When Jotaro shows up, the boss music is for him. After seeing so many disadvantaged heroes barely coming out on top, it was very refreshing for me to see Jotaro fight on even ground and dominate the battle. Jotaro turns the tables in the dynamic of the fights. He gives the villains a turn to be scared. Honestly this applies to Josuke and Giorno as well. I get why with Jotaro specifically it's so jarring at first. Because Araki threw the MC plot armor rule out the window with Jonathan, and he technically killed off Joseph for a while too, but he definitely brought that trope back with Jotaro. I honestly can't believe anyone seriously thought that Josuke and Giorno would ever lose. As a matter of fact, their Ws were more clear to me than Jotaro's, because I saw Jotaro do the impossible and beat Dio before. I never thought Jotaro could kill Dio, at least alone. So it's the opposite to me.
And this not only applied to Josuke and Giorno for me, but to Jolyne as well. Never in a million years would did I expect that Jolyne (WITH Jotaro, which added that sense of confidence in the MC like Josuke) could ever lose. That's why Stone Ocean's ending was so shocking. That is probably the reason why they are the most forgettable Mc in Jojo (kinda sad, Josuke is my favorite Mc). And guess who is the most popular Jojo? You might think that it has nothing to do with his looks, but the main reason he is popular is his character design that makes him stand out while looking fashionable. Also his style changes in different parts, so that makes him more flamboyant. But part 3 Jotaro just works the best, the hat that makes his eyes look more serious, his cool School trenchcoat that still shows that he still is a student, his super stylish double belt not only adds to the fact that he is tall, he still cares about his fashion look and his pants with his shoes made him look even bigger. Overall his design with his color palette either screams a punk delinquent or a hardcore police officer. (you know his hat with the hand symbols and the blue/gray/black and yellow make it more clear and the fact that he is judging people by their actions/his line where he said he is the Judge). I’ve said it many times before and I’ll say it again: The real climax of Part 3 is the Vanilla Ice fight. The Dio fight is really the falling action of Part 3. Its strange that some random bodyguard/concubine of the Main antagonist has so much more soul put into the fight and emotional investment than the actual final showdown, but its honestly executed perfectly, and from a storytelling perspective I think its one of the best parts of the entire series if not the absolute best moment. I actually really gave a shit about Polnareff and Iggy and how terrified and emotionally broken Polnareff was during and after the fact. Survivor’s guilt is something I’ve experienced at several points in my life and seeing Polnareff get emotionally broken down but still putting in as much effort as he could to keep going is something I can connect with. That one arc after a lot of lighter-hearted adventures and the bro-road trip is what really makes Part 3 my favorite even if Jotaro isnt in as much danger. Polnareff being the comedic relief and also experiencing by far the most trauma out of any of the characters in the series is absolutely perfect and makes him more iconic to me than any of the main Jojos.

With regards to DIO, I still didn't think Jotaro could lose, but it became a very interesting question of "but HOW will he win?" in that situation.

I think the final fight in part 7 kind of shares this idea of having unconvincing stakes, except I think Araki knew this and played with it. Let me explain, part 7 spoilers ahead obviously.
So after Funny valentine is defeated all that is really left to do is finish the race. At this point there aren't really any people in Johnny's way as hot pants, Diego and Gyro were killed in the battle before this. Only pocoloco is left but I think the fact that he is moreso a gag type of character speaks for itself. So Johnny get's on slow dancer and you think, how is Johnny going to catch up. You don't think 'Is johnny going to be able to catch up?' you just know he will.
But then at the last moment Araki throws a curveball, and the high voltage arc begins. Diego from another universe is here and that is not all, he has the world as well. So suddenly this fight gets a lot more intense, but in this moment you are probably thinking that Jotaro won against part 3 Dio as well so Johnny will clutch it as well. Tusk act 4 is a powerhouse as well so the win is very possible. So you will likely think that Johnny is going to win but you might be less sure of it now that Diego is here.
The fight goes on and it shows how powerful Diego is, but Johnny manages to hang on. Then they get to the bridge and Johnny shoots Diego with tusk act 4. Only for Diego to cut of his foot and throw it at Johnny, leaving him with the effect of tusk act 4. Diego not only wins the fight, but the race as well. What started as a race I was sure Johnny was going to win ended with him barely finishing (He might have even been disqualified because Steven helped him out). To Johnny it was never about the race but it still took me by surprise to see that Johnny did not win it.

Because Jotaro was always presented as such a powerful charater, a protagonist, for whom losing in a fight wasn't ever even a possibility, but during the final battle with Pucci he seems to have made all the right steps and even though the situation looks so complicated, the reader still fully believes that Jotaro will fight his way through with the help of Jolyne and basically save the day. However he dies so fast and is so quickly cast aside, his passing is basically left unacknowledged on such a level it even seems uncanny and unbelievable. For this reason his death had a huge impact on me and was one of the main reasons why i found he ending of part 6 so devastating. For me with Jotaro vs Dio I originally wasn’t worried and knew that Jotaro would win like normal, good beats evil. But until I learned Dio’s true power, the question of HOW is Jotaro going to win was what made me question if they would tie. The road roller scene put the nail in the coffin for me believing Dio had won, and made Jotaro winning so much better.

One of my favorite themes in JJBA is the concept of sacrifice. When you watched or read Jonathan die for the first time, and the rise of Joseph, everyone could tell that JJBA wasn't stagnant and there were consequences to the actions of years before. Personally, all the other Jojos have given up so much for whatever victories. But, Jotaro was one of those weird cases where you didn't think he was going to die, which made me less invested in the DIO VS. Jotaro fight. It kinda hurts me, considering that this exact fight is one of the most important to the series. Jotaro is still top tier, I just wish there were more stakes is all.

For most of part 3, i knew that jotaro was never in any trouble. Most battles were stand of the week battles and i knew that the main character wouldn’t die in them. After avdol was brought back, i never trusted if any death was permanent in jjba anymore. When joseph was killed by dio, i was skeptical if it was permanent. I was sort of hoping that joseph stayed dead even though he’s one of my favourite characters because I felt that him being brought back was sort of a cop out by araki to avoid killing a popular character. So what i leaned from part 3 is not “will this character survive?” but “how will they win?”.

It was Joseph surviving part 2 that made me know Jotaro wouldn’t die in part 3. And since then, there hasn’t really been any stakes for the Joestars. Joseph survived being rocketed into the sky. Jotaro brought Joseph back to life after Dio killed him. Bites the Dust was reversed entirely. Giorno managed to break King Crimson’s broken ability. Jolyne rewrote the universe after defeating Pucci. In parts 4 and 6, barely anyone remained dead. In Parts 3 and 5, almost all of the major deaths happened at the very end. Steel Ball Run managed to fix most of that with Johnny, but there were still some moments that I did not like (mostly involving Dio). The entire series was a bit predictable when it came to main character deaths after Part 1. You’d have one major death to spark emotion in the Joestar (Caesar, Shigechi, Abbachio, Foo Fighters) in the middle of the series and then any other deaths are reserved for the final battles. And then half the time the deaths are reversed.
Edit: Stone Ball Run -> Steel Ball Run

@@thefantabulousladyvira Let me rephrase. Jolyne's actions directly led to the downfall of Pucci. While she herself did not land the finishing blow, she was the reason Emporio was able to beat him. So, it was her actions that defeated Pucci. Without her, the team would have lost. The same could be argued for most JoBros (Jotaro could not have beaten Dio without Kakyoin or Polnareff) but I decided to keep it short by just focusing on the Joestars.

y'know, with what i've felt upon watching parts 1-6 (finishing part 6 on manga), i felt as if.. yeah, jotaro just has such a massive plot armor.
part 1, i was hoping jonathan would live but.. yeah...
part 2, i actually did think joseph died there (but he didn't, thankfully)
part 4, when i thought josuke was a goner, i was hoping that jotaro would show up to kick kira's ass
part 5, yeah no giorno just keeps going on suicide missions but manages to get through them thanks to his plot armor
part 6? oh yeah. i was also usually anticipating someone to get jolyne out of her own sticky situations over there, mainly calling on jotaro.
with part 3? i always expected jotaro to be able to beat everyone up. the times polnareff or the others were in trouble? "jotaro, jotaro, where the hell is he?" would usually have sprung into my head.
the only time i DID feel scared that they'd had lost was with the fight with the first d'arby. it was such a scary gamble... and if he just called- SDC would have been over, then and there. thankfully, he looks menacing and serious enough, which caused d'arby to give up.

This is one of the reason I don’t really like part 3, since it feels like they can never lose, and the stakes were so low, and if you notice they usually would only come out of every fight with like a couple scratches or super minor injuries. I think there was like 2 episodes total that I thought something could go wrong, that would be the fight with the hanged man, and n’ doul however u spell it. But other than those 2 fights, the stakes couldn’t be any lower. And it’s kinda a shame since part 3 is the longest part to watch, it takes so long to get to those parts that actually feel like something of consequence might happen.

    • @someproshinobi3904

a couple minor injuries? i feel like they were not minor, when jotaro fought kakyoin, blood was gushing out of him in the end, polnareff gets tortured like 4 times with enya, justice, cream and the ebony devil, and also polnareff was chopped up by diavolo (ik diavolo isnt in part 3 but thats another example of what the crusaders had to go through). avdols bullet wound knocked him out so bad that they all thought he died at first and left avdol wounded with a hole in his head. kakyoin, avdol and iggy all died with horrible injuries. the D D'arby fight put me on my toes until the last 10 minutes. Joesph was getting dio brain cells in his head from lovers which would have affected him if nobody helped him. joesph died and was brought back to life. oh and kakyoin almost went blind and avdol got holes in his neck if im correct. literally they got bad wounds but for some reason they all came out of the episode with no wounds except the finale.

@@someproshinobi3904 I get wut ur sayin, point taken. And plus I’m Only talkin about part 3, if this was part 5 I wouldn’t have a problem, literally thought giorno was out of commission twice in the show.
Another thing about part 3 tho, is that they’re injuries would just go away magically in the next episode for most of the part, I never understood how. Last thing tho, I do like most of the fights once they get into Egypt, like for me it feels like that’s where they should’ve started cuz the bad guys there like n doul, the darby brothers, Ice bird, vanilla ice was cool. But all of or just about 90% of the stand users they fought before Egypt which was like most of the show, they felt like filler cuz nothing of real consequence happened. Imo when watching it like I said, it just felt like they couldn’t die.

i get ur point but i still feel like that everyone except jotaro could still die and some of them did
Kakyoin died, avdol died, and iggy died
joseph also died but was brought back.
i felt like jotaro was the only invincible one because he had the most op stand at the time but stands like hermit purple were more of a support type stand so i had a feeling at least one of them would die.
all the minor villians were REALLY weak (most of them before egypt and the oingo boingos were trash but fun to watch)
so only dio and vanilla ice were able to actually kill most of them.
The thing about SC is that in the beginning it felt like they were invincible, then they entered egypt and thats where things got crazy, kakyoin was out of comission the whole time which was sad because he was my favourite crusader.
when they enter dios mansion it feels like they will all make it out alive but only half of them survive which is sad.
I do get your point and i respect your opinion but i feel like at the same time they all get hurt at somepoint and most of them die.
The crusaders also have the most depressing end for basically all of them which makes you realize how tragic there lives were ever since 1987 to when they die. ( including joseph, 1940ish times for him)
The more I talk rant about this I think and understand your opinion more so i do agree with you but IMO they don't feel like they can't die.

That's why it was so much more moving when he lived and killed DIO. It also made me feel that Jotaro was going to die early was because I would look up "Jotaro" on Google and the search bar would try to finish my sentence with "death", and that got me scared. And also for a time I thought that Jotaro was going to die to Ratt because of the memes that he beat DIO but not a rat. Spoiler warning for Watchmen (the comic) and The Dark Knight Returns: When I read Watchmen for the first time, I totally thought that Nite Owl and Rorschach were going to win after all the work that they put in throughout the entire series. But as the comic went on, I started to realize just how desperate the stakes were, down to the fact that the final fight takes place in one of the most remote places in the world. I didn't want to believe that Rorschach died, even though he was not a perfect character, but rather the only character who was willing to actually fight no matter the odds (but he was batshit insane). Another comic like this is The Dark Knight Returns, where the main character (a *much* older Batman) is struggling just to fight normal goons because he refuses to entrust the future to the next generation. There are many times where I think he will die, especially since there is a new Robin to take his place. The reason I like The Dark Knight Returns so much as a Batman story is that it accepts the fact that Batman is mortal, and is only capable of what a human can do. Batman is a great character when he learns to trust his friends to surmount something impossible (i.e. Justice League, Long Halloween, Lego Batman Movie). Both of these comics feel weighty and important because they really make you feel like something incredible happened. To bring it back to JoJo's, I felt this way after finishing Phantom Blood for the first time. This sense of something big being set in motion, and that even if it wasn't a happy ending, I knew that things would be changed forever in the universe of the fiction.
