Sadly it was. In the 90's, people did not think about the issues that are so heavy in the show the same as they do now. It wasn't able to reach all the places it could've been because of this. But, this revival is a completely different show, even to the point where the show was written and always meant to be this way and now because of our changing world, 28 years later it has reached its goal.
@@zacharyl4594 well I like to think, that this show, really was a small part of how we got to think about all those things... I mean... when I had my big gay church wedding in 2004, 'Part of the Human Heart' was part of the musical joy... Which of course most of our straight guests hadn't heard and thought was beautiful... :) deliciously subversive? :)
There is nothing about this show which is locked to a time period. I loved it immensely and it should have won the Tony over the three lesser shows which shared all the awards.
+Charlie Edwards I had never heard of this musical until I saw my college's production of it. I fell in love with the show, the characters, and especially the music. I know Paper Mill Playhouse did a production of this show, but I would love to see it back on Broadway.
My musical fanatic "friend" doesn't even know this show! I did the junior version years ago and was little ti Moune. It has a special place in my heart being the first musical I've done. I recently revisited it and I can't believe that no one knows about it
this show is like The lion king metts the little mermaid meets romeo and juliet. AMAZING! the costumes are not that good, but they should revive it, it would be awesome in this day and age!
Shae Henry It’s actually a retelling of the original Little Mermaid tale. And while I see where you’re coming from with the Lion King analogy, this show is actually set in the French Antilles.
If you can find a copy of the original cast recording I think you will really enjoy it! The new revival recording is also outstanding, but they are (as they should be!) delightfully different from each other and each has its own magical beauty!
I think it’s cool when you have a performance so close to your heart and totally love it, and believe it’s never gonna be topped. And then, the best musical revival comes on broadway and bam! You have an even better one.
I want to cry. I was Erzulie four years ago in my high school's production and this never fails to bring back the beauty and magic I remember feeling then.
Happy Accident There is one opening this November, and my friend Tony Winner Lea SALONGA (Miss Saigon, Les Miserables, Flower Drum Song, Allegiance) plays Erzulie. They also mixed the 'genders' of some of the gods: Alex Newell ( Glee) plays Asakah, Goddess of the Earth and Papagaye God of Death is played by a female actor.
Omg the amount of times I've watched this is crazy!! I'm in love with this!!! I'm in once on this island jr. and our performances are this Friday and Saturday!! I was cast as Asaka and I'm so excited!!!
My school is doing this musical in a few weeks, i got casted as Andrea and I started crying when I saw the cast list. Super exited to preform it considering my school is the highest ranked school in my state, going to be great.
Suuuuper late but I wanna know how it went! I recently auditioned to be Ti Moune and my cast list comes out today. My friend wants to be Daniel too. Pray for us!
It's actually based on Trinidadian author Rosa Guy's novel My Love, My Love which is of course, in turn, based on Anderson's classic tale. So you're still right! lol
Ha, my high school put this show on. I was the male lead. Funny looking back to think we were all white kids. Ti Mun was a German exchange student. So much fun, a great memory.
Garboth how'd you think that? There is line that says "the grand hommes with they're pale brown skin" and another that days "and the peasants, black as night..."
@Sam Mathis when the writers wrote the screenplay, they wrote two versions. They story is the same except one version the people were separate because of skin color and the other one was social class. So his production makes sense because they used social classes to spectate the people on the island
This is based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. Also, the costumes aren't supposed that good or big and elaborate. This is a story being told by peasants to calm down a little girl during a storm.
Eugene law LIES! I saw this years before the revival was brought up. I was entranced by Lillias. So, I was excited to see Alex, needless to say I was a little underwhelmed. She acts this and sings this like hell. He simply showboats.
This isn't actually one of the songs right? I listened to the whole soundtrack and I don't remember it. It sound just like a mish mosh of the songs. Sorry if this sounds stupid.
Love LaChanze, but this production appears to hold no candle to the 2018 version. Alex Newell alone as Asaka singing this number is far superior. I know it's 27 years ago...but it looks too "animated" for Broadway. Love love love the 2018 version, but appreciate the original production
SPJ W ibdisagree. Especially considering three tony award winning Broadwayshows of this year were in fact based on actual animated things (Spongebob, Frozen, And Anastasia). This production in terms of costumes looks rather whack. Like look at Ezrulie. U can’t tell by her costume that she’s a goddess. But anyway, I think the major difference here is 1) this stage probably isn’t what the actual show looked like hence the crappy background and 2) both Alex and Lilias have different takes on the song but both are still very much great. Lilias is more energetic and playful whereas Alex is in a way more guideful and motherly if that makes sense
I hear what you are saying, and in no way am I disrespecting what the actors did with the original production, just that my preference is for the 2018 version and the interpretation is much more to my liking.
the two productions are apples and oranges. Two completely different visions of the same material and it seems unfair to make judgements about this production based on the tony performance, which is only a sliver of the actual show and not within the original context
Took 27 years but they finally won their Tony last night.......well, the revival did!
This was ahead of its time
Sadly it was. In the 90's, people did not think about the issues that are so heavy in the show the same as they do now. It wasn't able to reach all the places it could've been because of this. My exact sentiments
There is nothing about this show which is locked to a time period. I loved it immensely and it should have won the Tony over the three lesser shows which shared all the awards.
When Asaka went up the octave at 4:08 I think I blacked out for a few seconds.
This show is so underrated! I really want there to be a Broadway revival of this show!
+Charlie Edwards I had never heard of this musical until I saw my college's production of it. I fell in love with the show, the characters, and especially the music. I know Paper Mill Playhouse did a production of this show, but I would love to see it back on Broadway.

I just love how LaChanze burst out laughing right before Lillias' last high note... there's so much joy in this performance
I love LaChanze's face when Lillas shouts in her ear,it cracks me up!!

Your wish has been fulfilled! I just saw it a few weeks ago and it absolutely amazing.
This comment aged well
The little Waiting For Life Reprise is one of my favorite parts of the show and it’s not on the soundtrack brb I’m crying

You know I had never made the comparison it is essentially the same plot
This is UNDER THE SEA!
This show should have won the Tony.
Nick Mayor THEY WON A REVIVAL MUSICAL
Sweet baby Jesus, LaChanze, can you get more beautiful? I thought it wasn't possible, and then you sang.
ok how am i just hearing about this?! it is MAGICAL
If you can find a copy of the original cast recording I think you will really enjoy it! The new revival recording is also outstanding, but they are (as they should be!) delightfully different from each other and each has its own magical beauty!
Ive watched this more times than I would like to admit and Lilias gets better everytime!

That's Andrea Frierson as the Goddess of Love in pink at the start of the segment. She was a sensational Dorothy in THE WIZ in Australia in 1978.
Thank you so much for the kind words.💜
This is so damn good I want to cry.
Wait, I just did.
I think it’s cool when you have a performance so close to your heart and totally love it, and believe it’s never gonna be topped.
And then, the best musical revival comes on broadway and bam! You have an even better one.
Alex Newell brought me here...
I played TiMoune my senior year of college and it was such an amazing experience!
I want to cry. I was Erzulie four years ago in my high school's production and this never fails to bring back the beauty and magic I remember feeling then.
Revival please?? #broadwaywishes
Your wish is being granted. It's set for the 17-18 season
Jackson DeStefano fr when?
November 2017, Lea Salonga will be Erzulie. Alex Newell will be Asaka. Cool cast. You can Google it.
Happy Accident

I'm so excited! I'm seeing it Friday night!!!!!
I'm in love of everybody's smile on this performance!
We are the muses, goddesses of the arts and proclaimers of heros...
Oh Asaka is FABULOUS!!! God I love her
asaka's last note is amazing!
Omg the amount of times I've watched this is crazy!! I'm in love with this!!! I'm in once on this island jr. and our performances are this Friday and Saturday!! I was cast as Asaka and I'm so excited!!!
So how was it?
Finally wins a long deserved Tony
I saw the show three times on Broadway. I would love to see it there again! Big fan of Lillias White and LaChanze!
Lillias is a goddess!
My school is doing this musical in a few weeks, i got casted as Andrea and I started crying when I saw the cast list. Super exited to preform it considering my school is the highest ranked school in my state, going to be great.
Kelsey P 4 years late but how did it go?
Suuuuper late but I wanna know how it went! I recently auditioned to be Ti Moune and my cast list comes out today. My friend wants to be Daniel too. Pray for us!
I LOOOOOOOOOOVE this performance
Im glad that it had a revival
Geez, this is unreal!!!!
I love the rewrites for this performance :) this show just makes me smile
Omg baby La Chanze!!!! 😍
Oh my god, I took African Dance, and I know a bunch of those moves!!! Ibo Arms, people!!!
It's actually based on Trinidadian author Rosa Guy's novel My Love, My Love which is of course, in turn, based on Anderson's classic tale. So you're still right! lol

Garboth we are doing it this year.............
La Chanze and Lillias White played two of the muses in Hercules.
That would be nice if all 5 of them get back together and be in a broadway show together.
Omg thats cool
This is based on Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. Also, the costumes aren't supposed that good or big and elaborate. This is a story being told by peasants to calm down a little girl during a storm.
So, four years too late, but this is not based on The Little Mermaid. This is based on the book My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy,
@@amyleerae89 and the book was based on the little mermaid
@@jellyinjam Interesting. Thank you for the insight/correction. I do think the book should be mentioned though, because many people leave it out.
Oh my gosh, this performance was EVERYTHING!
Someone tell my music teacher to do this, AGAIN!
im so fucking hyped for the revival im LOSING MY MIND
Audition for this play in TWO DAYS! gonna sing the little mermaid- part of ur world.
Im SO nervous
LACHANZEEEEE
Omg the revival BLEW THIS CLEANN OUT THE WATER. Alex Newell tore this song up!!!!!
Eugene law LIES! I saw this years before the revival was brought up. I was entranced by Lillias. So, I was excited to see Alex, needless to say I was a little underwhelmed. She acts this and sings this like hell. He simply showboats.
Is there a reason why this version of Mama Will Provide wasn't put into the Cast Album?
I loved when Ti Moune came into the song near the end
The Ti Moune part is from a little reprise of "Waiting For Life" that comes directly after "Mama" in the show.
So good.
Ok Alex had more vocal power but this version had better annunciation... I still like Alex’s version better
She strained less and hit the high notes easier, I vote this.
Ehhhh. Alex was good, but he’s no Lillias. He gave a more showboaty tone to it. She acted this and sang this!
The revivals r almost always better
Lillias White kills it! Later on, Lillias and LaChanze would reunite to be two of the muses in Hercules!
I was cast as Gossiper #2 and the understudy for Agwe, Papa Ge, and Danial's father.
I auditioned for this today. Casting is Monday-Friday CAN'T WAIT. (Once On This Island Jr.)
I love all this energy
the tony awards are in 6 mins!!!!! ahhh!
2:45 Damn, that was super smooth.
You can totally see elements that Disney pulled from. Finally they are making an adaption.
Chills.
OH! o.o
My mistake. Could've sworn I read somewhere that Julie directed it. Okay, that explains somethings. Thanks, and my more sincere apologies...
la chanze was in disney's hercules
She was one of the Muses
So was Lillias
revival please?
wish granted
Can you hit those notes? Cause just cause you're a boy doesn't mean you have to be limited.
❤️❤️❤️
I'm sorry. No one can do it like La Chanze
Wow look at Lilias
I think if Lillas originated this role she would have won the Tony
Lilias!!!
Come on thru Lillian
wooooooooo!
This isn't actually one of the songs right? I listened to the whole soundtrack and I don't remember it. It sound just like a mish mosh of the songs. Sorry if this sounds stupid.
Yes, it's a medley of multiple songs from the show.
King Bradford The first song is a bit of The Human Heart and then they go into Mama Will Provide
the "Oh Daniel" part isn't on the cast recording but takes place between Mama Will Provide and Some Say
where can i watch the original broadway version?
NinaBobinaaa the NY Performing Arts Library
Sometimes I wish I was a girl so I could sing these really fun solos.
Denjamin Pip I'm a girl and I can't hit these notes😂😂
Weird bc I wish I was a guy sometimes to sing some of the fun male roles
Hercules brought me here
I WAS TI MOUNE IN HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!
woooooo!!!!!(*⁰▿⁰*)
Um...Graciela Daniele directed/choreographed the original Once On This Island...
Oh yup look at erzulie
holy cow Ti Moune is skinny!!!
revival!!!!
Stormy weather? Belafonte
In middle school i was ton ton Julian
I mean, come on! :-)
which one is julie tamor
hahaha
Was White the understudy? She doesn’t sing this on the recording.
I believe she took over for Asaka after Kecia Lewis concluded her run.
Lawl. Wut?
I...too........sometimes wish you were a girl.
Disney stole this for Moana

I suspect if you listen to both recordings you will find truly magical things about both performances...
Alex can't sing. He's just shouting and growling. Pronunciations where abysmal.
Sorry but the new one is so much better
This looks and sounds like people making fun of the islands
well it’s not
