    PRR should have saved the S2 as a museum piece. By the time she went to scrap, the funeral was being planned for steam power. Saving the S1, the S2, a T1, and a Q2, would not have been painful for Pennsy. Granted, they were just machines from which to recover investment by 1952. Historically more interesting than economically valuable.

      Officially, none of these experimental types were considered successful enough to warrant saving. Just so much scrap. PRR should have saved a J1 too, but that was a C&O design so...

      There is a story with some pedigree, that in 1960, three J1's remained on the deadline at Altoona. One had been designated for the Northumberland collection. It derailed in the yard three times while they tried to move it, so PRR simply said "to heck with it", and that was that. The story is apocryphal, but has been corroberated by men who were there at the time.

      A lot of locomotives should have been saved from the cutter's torch and donated to museums. Especially the unique, one-of-a-kind, and experimental designed locomotives. I'm surprised they let all the New York Central Hudson's get cut up. For such iconic streamliners, you'd think them first on the list for preservation. It's quite understandable; however, that a company president would have more concern over facing bankruptcy than saving pieces of railway heritage and ingenuity. Nevertheless, something still could have been done. The ALCO Century 855 wasn't even that old. Yet they cut it up without a blink.
      Thank goodness for trust societies though. If they do complete PRR 5550 we'll our modern working steam locomotive.

      I agree. Thankfully, an organization called the T1 Trust is rebuilding the T1, so at least one of the legends get saved.

    Great video! One of the most interesting PRR layouts I've seen. I felt as if I were actually there in 1948 chasing the S2. Thanks for posting!

    Gorgeous. I have the lower-quality Lionel model of the S2. It's interesting because of its history, but not as much fun to watch go around the track as other steamers, because there's just less going on. I'd love to get this version some day.

    Also, at 6:39 there are two long 'A' PRR diesels coupled together in opposite directions with what appears to be multiple axles on them, what diesels are those and who's the manufacturer?

      Thank You for the compliments! The locomotives are the Baldwin "Centipede" originally intended for passenger use but ended up being helper engines at Altoona and Horseshoe Curve. Baldwin DR 12-8-1500/2. PRR had 24 of them (12 pairs). The models were made by Broadway Limited a few years back.

    How were they able to get the turbine sound?........did they use archival footage?

      The PRRT&HS Modeling Committee, working with BLI, scoured the world for good recordings of the S2. Unfortunately, only one recording was found that was purported to be be the S2 and it was not useful. We then looked for direct drive steam turbines, found a Swedish one on TH-cam and used that sound as a starting place to create a credible sound for the S2.

    Again, I praise you for not using 48' Broadway Limited cars w/ S2. I like the mix of heavyweights and F.O.M. Streamliners. I guess, this overnight mix express trains. Great that you you had the solarium at the tail, but I am not quite sure if the marker lights are era correct. Perhaps, it is too modern. Most likely, the PRR "yellow oil can" type are the correct ones for the solarium. If you want to "back date" your markers, get Calscale 190-463 PRR markers. I would like to see the S2 pulling some BLI P70 coaches. These are one of best plastic HO passenger cars out there.

      Hi, I agree about the markers. The ones on the solarium are simple, red, fiber optic filament. Hopefully someday there will be a nano-LED PRR oil can type available. At the time the BLI P70s weren't available yet. I have since picked up some MTH HW PRR cars including a pretty accurate 'Queen Mary' open-end observation. MTH actually does a pretty good job with their HO passenger cars but I wish they would make more types available.

    out of all the steam turbine engines of the USA the 6200 has to be my favorite one (I've also gained some like for the n&w 2300) I bought the lionel model (the one that was made in the 80's with a caboose) at my train show early this year I wish some engines were saved from scrap (I've been going around youtube lately saying what engines could of or should of been saved I don't mean to it's just wish that some were saved like the 6200)

    I like that you hold the temptation of not including a Walthers' Broadway Limited 48' cars in your consist.
    Your close up shots are great. I can tell that as far as detail, it has more than early brass such NJCB, but far less than Key or Challenger models. It is a bit of let down. Considering that BLI has done better job with Q2. Which I still think was the best PRR brass hybrid that they made so far, would you agree?
    Sound wise, it is probably very close to the prototype. These turbines were much close related to marine than aviation ones.

      Hi, and thank you for the comments. From what I have read about the S2 it ran on the Broadway but I don't believe the PRR trusted it enough for its premier train so it spent more time on lesser trains.
      I believe for the *value* the BLI model is excellent. I have some larger brass engines and by the time you add all the cost for custom paint, lighting, maybe DCC and sound the cost is really up there. I'll give up a little detail to have a reliable, good sounding engine. Yes, the Q is probably the best but MY favorite is the NYC Mohawk.

      There are some film and photos of S2 running the 39' BL, but they are not so obvious because, sometimes more baggage or express cars were added and sometimes the 39' Loywe styled streamlined cars were swapped or added to heavyweight cars. Most of clues about the BL are the BPO, twin diner/kitchen/dorm set and rounded end obs/dorm car. These were the cars that almost ever were there in that consist.
      Let's see who is going to commit the sin of adding a Walthers 48' BL behind of S-2!
      Like the T-1, the S2 was downgraded to shorter routes and less notable trains , because K-4s and diesels were more reliable and cheaper to operate.
      I had the Mohawk and I was not impressed. It can't be compared to a Key model. I was impressed with NYC streamlined Dreyfuss. with the exception that BLI decided to keep that ancient first model, first gen crappy 4-6-4 unequalized sprung chassis.

      Hi,
      I have several PRR Electrics, Metroliners, GG1s and Amtrak AEM7 and when I photograph them I like to at least have the "look" of catenary. I found the poles at Shapeways. I plan to have a super-magnet set into the ground and a metal plate glued to the base of the catenary pole so they are removable. Just for looks. Check out Andy Rubbo's PRR layout for some great overhead wire!

      The layout fills an average ranch basement, about 35 by 50 feet. 30 inch main line curves. See some of my other videos, one is an on-board "cab ride" so you can get a better idea. My schedule has been hectic lately... but perhaps a visit in the distant future???

    Are the red lights in back of the tender always on?

      Unfortunately, yes! Pretty bright, too. The PRR markers were small cat-eye lenses and only bright if you were straight on looking at them. It would be nice to have a function switch to turn them off. I'm pretty sure they go off in reverse. The front markers are glass chips and they reflect a lot of light, too. I'll tone those down with weathering.

    Hi, this is overall question for all readers and my opinion about BLI PRR S2: I got one last week and mine is running with a little jerky. I oiled in the usual recommend places, plus I removed the holding plastic!? plate that exposes the drivers axles and bearings to pack some TFL grease. Bad surprise, I really can see once again BLI cutting corners. The two outer axles have brass bearing BUT only one is sprung! The 1st, 2nd and 3rd axles are not sprung. Which means that when the S2 goes to double slip turn out it may derails. This is a problem with most newer BLI steam locomotives. The other boiler and tender trucks are all plastic. Why BLI are going cheap in the hybrid line. It is very offending see that the great body detail is matched to so primitive and unrefined drive system. IMHO opinion the PRR Q 2 is one of best of BLI Hybrid model. It surpasses the older Olympia and Westside models. And has a brass chassis, all sprung drivers as always should be, plus no plastic trucks nor other larger parts made of it. That is the correct way of making a model that deserves being called brass hybrid.
    Any way, anybody had or has problems with a jerky S2 or other recent BLI releases?

    Great MRR, great engines/cars, structures, autos. But you really need to get that gray stuff off the walls and give it a light powder blue backdrop. The paper background hills and flora never convinces me, either.. Call it destructive criticism.......

    i have the same engine plus 2nd run of there Q 2 the Q 2 runs great but does not pull as many cars as the turbine because it does not have traction tires....

      I think Broadway did pretty well with what little they had to work with. I'm satisfied with the sound. I only wish they included the high-pitched turbo-generator for the headlight. Many other steam decoders have that sound when the headlight is turned on, not this one. I understand they based the sound program on a diesel decoder platform.

      +Charles Li Thank You! I agree about the bell. I have not made any programming changes, this is the way the locomotive is programmed by default, as delivered. I plan to make changes to customize the sounds.Thanks for the comment.

      I agree. It sounds like wind howling over an empty beer bottle :-) I have programmed the volume lower since this video was made. I'm sure Broadway did the best they could with little documentation available. Thank You.

    What would the minimum radius curve for this model?

      BLI says 22 inches. Trainworld track looks like it.
      I had a Custom Brass S2 in 1977. It derailed on a 36" curve. I sold it.

      And only if we had HD digital video in 1948, too! Thankfully there were some people that had the forethought to capture at least SOME of steam glory days on film. Thanks!

    That is a beautiful layout, excellent video of the PRR S 2 turbine with some others running as well. A fellow club member who doesn't have a layout kindly dropped off his S2, Q2 and GG1 at my house layout for me to video and post on TH-cam.     I’ve been watching clips of the Union Pacific 4014. It is the ultimate shame that the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad did not save more of their beautifully awesome locomotives. All scrapped.. A real shame that they did not see the value in saving a few of them for museums or whatever. They could’ve found a way to make money with them other than the sad ending of their lives.. truly disappointing

    I really dont think the turbine suppose to sound like that,,sound like a diesel engine..its a sweet train..it was called the big swoosh because the of the swooshing sound it made..

      I agree, I was expecting more of a low roar like the UP Gas Turbines - Dennis.

    I'm not sure why this threw me off seeing as she is turbine but her look juxtaposed to her lack of chuffing made me tilt my head. A steam wonder I will never see except in pictures and models doe to scrap.
