- This video will help you get out of a sticky situation when you have forgotten your Mac password and need to reset it without losing any data. This video shows how to modify the password to any account using Mac OS X 10.6 or above (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite).

I was able to acquire a used, late 2013 27" iMac from my employer for basically no cost! It had just been sitting in a vacant office collecting dust for well over a year. After all the supervisors and HR signed off on my request, it was mine. It had a password on it that no one could remember. This method worked PERFECTLY! Thank you Snazzy Labs! Hello! Does this work with the Administrativ password too? Im a full Windows user but have to reset the Administrativ password.. Best would be I don't have to ''reset'' the whole MAC.

I followed the instructions, and everything worked smoothly, almost. You have to click on the Mac harddrive icon when you get to the stage of identifying what is your something-or-other, right at the end. A+

A firmware password does prevent this trick from working (although the majority of Macs don't have one). If you also forget your firmware password however, you'd better know how to swap hard drives.
dumb question but at 1:59 he said to restart the device but it showed him holding his mouse on the shut down button. so which one do i click for that??

it asks for keychain password on login??? how can i reset that?
When i enter resetpassword, I dont even get the macintosh HD option to select.. It's just blank.

I eventually had to factory restore the Mac. Was horrible but still had to do it. The Macintosh HD does not appear because it's also locked. I don't think that there is a way to access.

Interesting... but there's another way to do this... Restart (or yes shutdown and then start up) your Mac and then instead of Command-R you can also do Command-S which will bring you into Single User Mode.. You'll see a lot of scrolling text. Don't worry... that's normal. Once the text stops scrolling type: mount -uw / and finally to change your password type passwd [usernamewithforgottenpassword], obviously filling in the username in question, and then hit enter. It'll ask for a new password. Enter it twice as how Quinn just did hitting enter after each time, and then type exit and your normal OS X log in screen should appear, awaiting your new password.
This method is handy if you for some reason can't get into the recovery mode on some Macs. It's good as a fail-safe. :)

Still will not work. Either way it just take you back to the home screen. I think this information is outdated.

FWIW, I was able to do a full reset using method 2 in the other video for 10.5 and older. My machine was a gift from a friend who upgraded; I had no software, Command + R, didn't work, and it runs 10.6.3.

what if i dont have a volume to select
The drive is locked using FileVault encryption. You cannot reset the password without the encryption password. All you can do is wipe it and lose all of the data.

I have something in mind. Do try this at your own risk. I won't be responsible for anything that might happen, whether the situation becomes worse or just the opposite.
NOTE: I haven't tried this before so it's basically just a theory waiting to be proved (or corrected).
Connect to your local wi-fi connection, Download "Find my iPhone" in any iDevice available (though, I do recommend the one with the newer iOS), then after logging in with your Apple ID (it needs to be the same Apple ID you used in your macbook). You need to let the app locate the macbook (after you connect the mac to the internet), if it shows up in the list of iDevices, tap on it and press lock, so, now you will enter a passcode (4-digit) or a password that you know too well to forget. Make sure the macbook was turned on and connected while doing this. After finishing all this, you need to restart your macbook and then you're done. All you have to do now is to boot and unlock it.
Connect your macbook to your local wi-fi connection*

Hey dude I watched your advanced mac tricks video and it was really cool. I love the caffeinate thing I tried it for a little bit and it worked wonders, but I have found an even easier way to prevent your mac from sleeping in the OS X operating system. It is called HOT CORNERS (not mad just trying to emphasize lol) 1) Go to system preferences 2) Click desktop & screen saver 3) click screen saver tab 4) click little button on bottom right that says hot corners 5) Pick any corner you like and hit the blue button and click "disable screen saver" 6) now whenever you put your pointer in the corner where you put "disable screen saver" it keeps the mac from sleeping until you pull the pointer out of that corner then it will go back to sleep based on your normal setting. I found this trick to be extremely handy and easier than opening terminal and typing all that. Plus you don't have to calculate how many seconds you want it to last. You can turn it off anytime you want by simply moving the pointer. P.S. I would also like to mention sticky which I used to use on my Windows computer all the time but it always turned off so quickly and wasn't worth it most times. But I got my new Mac and instantly fell in love with the Sticky keys because it makes all those command, option, control, keyboard shortcuts a lot easier because you don't have to hold down all the keys at the same time. Just some opinions I had that I thought you might be interested in. Thanks for your time hope you took the time to read all this.
