It weighs more if you burn it!

  • I am working on a few longer videos that are taking quite a bit of time to put together, So I made this today as a bit of fun.
Smouldering Vs Flaming Combustion. How they type of combustion will effect how smoke and ash will accumulate and disperse.
For firefighters this one is definetly a "nice to know" rather than a "need to know". Which is why the title says "slightly pointless". But if you are here just for the fire science, there are a lot of advantages to understanding this process. Understanding this process can allow you to begin to understand the effects of wildfire smoke on populated areas. It can also help to you to understand what is left after a wildfire burns through an area. Ash is a really interesting subject when you to start to scratch the surface!
Well anyway.. if you have read this far good on you! and thanks!! See you in the next video!

Brilliant! If only fire dynamics classes were as interesting as these videos are to understand basic combustion concepts. Thanks Matt!

Thank you so much for the videos. I have watched all 18 today. Very high quality. Very good experiment demonstrations. Top job.
    Thank you very much.

Hi Annon, that's quite the effort!! I'm glad you enjoyed them! I have more planned. They are just taking me a little while to get done 🙂

Awesome videos man. Super helpful and entertaining. Makes it much easier to understand and retain the info rather than from a book. 🙌🙌

Happy Holidays, Matt! Just wanted to say my boyfriend and I have really been enjoying your videos.
Funny enough, I used to be a fire performer 😅 The bush fire one reminds me of some of the safety classes I used to teach.

Hi Maggie, Thanks! It's great to hear you enjoyed the videos. Whats involved in fire performering? 🔥

      @@MattDavis5 I can't believe I didn't see this!
I was a fire dancer for many many years. I used kevlar wicks at the end of two smaller staves, soaked them in white gas, and spun them around. If you look up double staff fire spinning you can find examples of it 😊 Might make you, as a fire fighter, cringe just a little though!
Love the new video btw :)

Quality videos 👌🏼 I've recently started as a Firefighter in England and these videos are great for my development and also as a recap, thanks.

    Love the videos!
I'm definitely going to pass on your videos to my organisation, since they have helped me so much for my training!
Think you can do one on backdraught? Since this is one topic that we covered alot for marine FF.
Also CasEvac, BA breakdown and the transfer of fire between compartment through pyrolysis gases?
Keep up the amazing work, looking forward to your next videos!

Thanks!! I have been meaning to make a video on backdraught. I've just been holding off until I can do it justice 🙂 and thanks for the other suggestions too!

Hi! Can you explain what is an example of a non-freely propagating flame? The freely propagating flame is a model very commonly used for multiple combustion analysis, but what would be a counter example? For some reason I can't find the exact answer I want on the internet, thank you!
