Hi all, I made a small mistake at 1:30. I say surface to area ratio. Where I should have said surface area to volume ratio 🙂

Thank you so much for producing these videos. As a new firefighter, they are extremely helpful. I have read about all of these concepts, but you illustrate them in a way that helps with comprehension.

Hi Matt, really interesting video. Fire investigators here in the UK actually discovered that the King's Cross tube station fire was a result of convection currents "sitting down" and travelling up the escalator along with the fire being wind driven due to tube trains pushing air through the tunnels. Tragically the fire flashed over and people lost their lives including the station officer from Soho.

Hi Ed, I hadn't even considered how that effect might apply to urban fires. But then when you think of escalators and stairs it makes sense. I'll have to have a look at the report for that fire. Thanks 👍🏼

The bit you showed with the fire on the steep slope with the fire following the slope directly, that is what happened in the Kings Cross fire in 1987. The slope of the escalator was such that once the fire got going, it lay down and propagated along the steps which subsequently heated the steps until it flashed over into the ticket hall.

Hi Adam. Thanks for your comment. I hadn't even thought of how this might apply in the urban setting. Thats a really interesting example!

Love your vids Matt. I always recommend them to all our probies and not only them. Really clear and factual. Are you on any social media so we can follow your experiments etc?

Thanks Michael, I'm glad they are coming in handy. Currently TH-cam is the only place that I post fire related stuff. I have an Instagram account. But that's just for some photography stuff 🙂

I have shared the link to your channel on "Firefighters UK" facebook page as I don't think it is getting enough attention for such a well put and informative content. Keep up good work.

Nice series! Just a small detail, at 1:30 I think you meant Surface to Volume or just Surface Area

    • @MattDavis5

Thanks! And nice pick up! Yep I was meant to say surface area to volume ratio.. It's hard to edit videos once they are posted. But I'll pin a comment that adresses it. Thanks for letting me know 👍🏼

I like your videos Matt! Please can you make a video about why a lit cigarette can't ignite gasoline?

Thanks! I'm glad you like the videos. That sounds like a fun idea for a video! I have a short series of Bushfire videos planned out. Once I've done them I'll have a look at doing it 🙂👍
