I was kinda worried that the English version of this song wouldn’t sound as nice as the original but I’m so glad that I was wrong. Both versions sound beautiful 😊
Abuela is confronting her pain for the first time and finding peace in the process....It is one of the inspirational and bittersweet moments in the movie.
This song was perfectly placed at the end of the movie. In concert with the movie, at minimum send chills down your spine or even make you cry. There's so much criticism about how this movie didn't leave people with a memorable song or didn't have a villain. Maybe that's what makes this movie a masterpiece. It didn't follow the usual Disney script. For those critics, watch it again. There's so much attention to detail in this movie that you may have missed the first time. This movie is an easy 5 stars for me! This song will win awards and was perfect for Sebastián Yatra to execute.
I agree with you honestly I think the message is beautiful, its about family and community not a world ending threat and it feels more down to earth and most people can relate to that because everyone has a group they want to help and support
That’s actually one Thing that stuck out to me. No villain, and correct me if I’m wrong but I think is the first that Disney movie without a villain role. But because of that I feel like it’s a lot more real. Don’t get me wrong, a magical house is not realistic. But not having some scary villain kind of made me relate to it more, the challenge that was facing this movie was not A person, but one’s self, and I feel like that’s one of the hardest things to face of all.
I took the Grandmother as the villain of this movie... No, she wasn't intentionally being a villain, but her actions were very selfish which ended up severely damaging the dreams, happiness, & authenticity of her family. Causing them to be in a constant state of survival mode, making her happy, and abandoning themselves. Not to mention how she treated Mirabel... It was so bad that God, or some higher force, brought her into the world just to destroy the old way and bring in the New. But with all that being said, I do agree that this movie was so raw and down to earth that it really didn't need the stereotypical Disney villain.
"To fall apart, to reunite." A caterpillar metamorphosizing into a butterfly is one of the most amazing miracles of the natural world to me. Inside the cocoon, what was once their caterpillar bodies completely break down into essentially goop. Somehow, from the absolute mess, they find their way again to rebuild their bodies into something entirely differerent, ending up as butterflies. Oftentimes, we have to do that too. Break down into absolute nothingness in order to build something new, grow, and be free. This is a beautiful song and encapuslates the theme of Encanto so well.
I miss you dad. You had to leave this world when I was only 12 but you knew I was ready to fly. Now 25 years later I have my own little butterflies. Wish you could see them. 🥺

I have to say, this song is absolutely beautiful. Of course, in the actual scene it tells the love story of Abuela and Abuelo. I’m not going to explain the English meaning of it because it’s literally in the video, but it tells the story of two caterpillars falling in love and facing the world together, only for them to be separated, but telling them to move forward and find joy in the wonders of life. It’s a metaphor for the love story, but it’s also a metaphor for the current state of the Madrigal family. They think they have no home because Casita has fallen to the ground, highlighted by the line “just let the walls come down” but if they just keep going forward, they will build a new home, the foundation of which being their love for each other. It’s such a beautiful metaphor. And the ending in which the caterpillars turn into butterflies is just genius. They were in their cocoons, not knowing what to do with their world around them, but now their love is what turned them into something beautiful. Abuela finally gets to meet the other butterfly after Abuelo’s sacrifice, and that is her family. It’s also interesting to note that applying this, the one butterfly at the beginning of the song turning into countless butterflies could also be a metaphor, this time the former symbolizing Abuela, a lone butterfly who never got to start a family with Abuelo in it, who would’ve been a second butterfly. Then after the song, she realizes that the Madrigals are her new butterflies, and it’s also interesting to me that the numerous butterflies are trying to lead Mirabel and Abuela home. You could make the argument that “if the butterflies represent the family why don’t they only have one butterfly for each member of the family” but think about how the song is a metaphor for beauty and love. It’s trying to say that the family is so beautiful it can’t be described by one butterfly per family member.

That's because of the Realismo Mágico feeling that this movie has. Gabriel García Márquez, a Colombian literature nobel used to write novels with that feeling, and the yellow butterflies are something important for us colombians. :)

Both the Spanish and English lyrics work so well! Are many lines close to a literal translation? Or has each verse or section had its meaning translated instead? It's impressive to have it rhyme in two languages, especially so if each line carries an identical meaning.
If you watch the movie with subtitles it translates almost everything they say in Spanish unless they repeat it in English right after including this song which made watching the flashback of her grandma hurt so much more

Just realized, mirabel didnt have a gift. Because she was the gift itself to the family. To fix it. It was predetermined to break and she was the one who was brought to fix it.
