Jesus, what an absolute savage… It’s been years since I last watched this (on VHS!), and after getting into Guthrie, Tom Quayle, Matteo Mancuso, and the djent scene, it blows my mind how Paul Gilbert is still untouchable. And not just his technique.
The scary part is he's not looking about 95% of the time, he's looking at the audience...Here is a man at one with his guitar. Paul Gilbert is a guitar god.
How could anyone argue?....Paul is the MASTER of shred guitar. Hands down. There's no contest. I'm sorry, you can hand over the Pulitzer right now, I'd like to thank everyone who voted. Bye now.
Exceptionally excellent guitarist incarnated with superb faculty, creative and artistic aptitude. The presentation was greatly spellbounding and induced hysterical madness!
I remember my first time seeing Paul play live was at the Living Room in Providence back in 89 with Mr. Big. Amazing performance. Perfect in his skills as always. But Billy Sheehan just totally blew my face off.
Funny thing is that this was from his Mr Big days when everyone didn't know Paul was a shredder. Most of them were there to see them play "To be with you"
Yea Paul is definitely in the top 3 of my list. His notes are so clear and separated. And he has a great personality and can play anybody else's stuff too, from Bach to malmstean.....
If he shared his talent with a dozen others they would all be amongst the best musicians out there. Otherworldly levels of skill we should just admire and appreciate. If others haven't discovered him yet then that's their loss
I love his string skipping so much!! its totaly bomb... and i've been workin' my ass of here for a few days and im really startin' to get hit goin', Paul is so GREAT!
Gilbert waaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww Goddddddddddddddddd he knws how to play decrecendo n crecendo which is vry hard wen playin but he nail if its notin to him wooooooooowwwwww
Actually, it's fairly structured. He's explained every lick in this solo on a video in some form, or another. You can tab out every note in this video, but I would recommend just practicing the individual licks like he does.
I appreciate Paul Gilbert alot more now that I actually play the guitar..that made the difference for me. PG is by far the most appealing thing to my ear now lolzz
@xPurpleDrinkx9001 It's the same as his lick "Sequenced String Skipping", just transposed to a different key...not sure what key though, I haven't taken the time to figure it out
I gotta agree with johnsone7777. This guy is technically fantastic, but he plays more like a machine than a musician. A good portion of that solo was nothing more than a bunch of arpeggio and scale exercises - stuff that should be reserved for the woodshed, not made into a feature part of the solo. There are technicians, and there are artists, and occasionally there are dudes like EV who are both. In short, this solo lacked creativity and artistry..... yawn!
So i start clicking on all these "shredder" videos and THIS guy is fukkin awesome. and it's like he's hardly moving his right hand. makes me want to give up guitar. I mean PRACTICE my guitar. yeah - oh and btw the bass player coming up and taking the drill off his hands at the end - thats fukkin teamwork.
um... it works, i guess. if you got the distortion cranked up to the max, it'll make a lot noise and it gets harder to get the notes cleanly. lucky paul, with his slight distortion ;)
God I hate that singer but I guess no really cares about the singer in any band containing Paul lol Might as well be the talking clock on vocals but i'd still go to the show. \m/ Marshall
@shredhexus He dont scream into the pickups hes picking with his teeth... Hendrix was the first to do it and now alot of guitarists do it on stage.. It had nothing to do with screaming...
@johnsone7777 I would certainly disagree with Paul being labelled boring. Emotions such as joy, excitement, fear, and wonderment are just as valid as what "soulful" musicians convey. If you don't get Paul, that's your choice. Personally, I find a lot of artists that are gods of "soul" to be extremely boring. Then again, I'm not trolling Eric Clapton (post Cream of course) videos commenting on how boring he is.
@jimn1968 I couldn't disagree more. It's absolutely the opposite. It's personal preference on who's the better musician, not on the guitarists. When you hear people like Jimi or Stevie Ray Vaughan, people get confused and call them some of the best guitarists ever. While they were only good guitarists, it's their musicianship that really made them great. You never saw SRV or Jimi for example do mind-boggling finger gymnastics like MAB or Paul, but their music ripped at your soul.
I'd just like to point out that music originated as a form of ENTERTAINMENT. The shred genre is built on the concept of ENTERTAINING people. It could be said that shredders are 'better' musicians than melodic, slow guitarists because they are more entertaining. I'm not saying I believe that, but just pointing this commonly ignored fact out. One thing to ask yourself about any song: Am I entertained by this? That is why people like shred. It is entertaining.
He was using Ampegs around this time. They were the Lee Jackson designed ones. Cool amps. Very transparent, though. Meaning, if you sucked as a player...they would show it. Much like a Marshal Plexi. If you knew how to milk a tube amp, they were great. Other than that, he's only using a few stomp boxes here for effects. He just sat them on the stage. lol They rest of the tone is just a kick ass player who really knows how to tame a wild, loud, distorted amp and make it musical. : )
@johnsone7777 this isnt a song of his, its a live solo, its to wow these people. try listening to some of his actual songs before you say he has no soul, cuz honestly, i dont believe anyone can get as far as he has in the music industry without truly loving what they do. if you find it boring fine but to say he has no "soul" because you don't like it is quite insulting
Actually, EVH is one of, if not Paul's favorite guitarists and one of the main reasons he wanted to play in the first place. watch his "Guitar Wars - To Be With You" video, that's a tribute to VH. SO, comparing the two is kind of stupid since they are both GREAT. Paul will tell you himself how good EVH is.
i don't understand why anyone's arguing... some guy says no one's heard of paul gilbert? LOL if you don't like him, fine. but anyone who knows anything about guitar knows DAMN well who paul gilbert is. and if you don't know anything about guitar, well, we don't care about you or your opinion anyways.
Well no i know what a floyd rose does, but a floyd rose would not make any difference to screaming into the pickups... Coz all the floyd rose does is loosen and tighten the strings altering the pitch...screaming into the pickups has nothing to do with the strings...
Yeah, but Mustaine has much more charisma if Im honest, but i suppose the frontman has to have more than a lead guitarist. I hate people that say " oh Vai is the best everyone else is just some lame douche " there is no best it is personal preferance.
I know people say that saying who you think is the best guitarist is only an opinion. But I really think that Paul and Steve vai really are the best guitarists but still thats my opinion but for some reason i think its true.
hmmmmmmm. I don't think so. Malmsteen can be sloppy IMO, and mainly sticks to only 3 string sweeps, plus his tapping.... what tapping? I think gilbert wins hands down in shred and musicianship. But hey, whatevs.
I wish my speakers didn't suck so bad...I really want to write out the part from 1:02 to 1:53, but it's so distorted in my speakers. I do know that it's pretty much two riffs repeated alot...but I can't fully make it out.
I find that a lot the newer guitar players are very fast but nowhere near as musically interesting as the like of Satriani or Paul Gilbert and such. Also the Ibanez PGM is the best guitar I've ever played and I've played a few
@reviewhouse eddie is nothing seriously. yeah he was good but only reconised cus he was comercial. go to the more uncomercial rock there are people who would knock van halens fuckin socks off lol
@MrSchfiftyFive yeah, i know that, if you think of the string skipping lick.. its pretty awesome, search for "Sequenced string skipping" on youtube, and youll find it.. tab at ultimate guitar
It is, if you knew anything about guitar you would know that Paul Gilbert is one of the best. I don't know what your problem is, but if you don't like him then why did you watch this video?
I wonder how many people in the audience knew who Paul Gilbert truly is.. Or knew that in the guitar would hes a legend.. They probably just thought he was just another guitarist of a hair band
Clean tone....can you not read? ; ) Repetition....happens in music from time to time. ; ) you know....choruses and whatnot. It's cool if you don't like it, though. to each his own. : )
ultimate guitar archive...there's a tab called tokyo 99...it contains almost the same riffs...actually it's the transcription for the other version but it's pretty much the same...enjoy it!
Actually, guitar pickups can pick up any sound going into them, you don't have to touch the strings and talk, I talk into my guitar all the time for fun and my lips never touch the strings.
Actually, I think it's his right hand that is the shiz..... plenty of people have as quick left fingers as Paul, but no one on earth controls the pick like Paul does............
do you really evaluate a musician looking if he's in a top 20 or not? remember that in many charts blik 182's drummer was the number 1...that's the proof they mean nothing....
My two favorite guitarists:
Eddie van halen
Paul Gilbert
Mine lil Wayne and Fred Durst.
Don't forget Jason Becker and Greg Howe.
Was he screaming into the guitars pick ups?
Yes
Jesus, what an absolute savage…
It’s been years since I last watched this (on VHS!), and after getting into Guthrie, Tom Quayle, Matteo Mancuso, and the djent scene, it blows my mind how Paul Gilbert is still untouchable. And not just his technique.
Teacher of Buckethad
for me.. he is the BEST AND THE GREATEST GUITARIST of ALL TIME!!!
Hands-down the cleanest and most precise alternate picking I've heard in ages!
Paul gilbert is just one of those guitarist that get better everytime
That twang is incredible.
for gods sake someone please tab this out for the rest of the planet
he knows what the fuck he Is doing
That's what separates the men from the boys. There is only a handful of people in the world that "it" on guitar, and Paul Gilbert is one of them.
his tapping-ability is underrated, very clean!
thumbs up for paul.
My favourite guitarists
Slash
Eddie Van halen
paul gilbirt
Holy shit! That was incredible
no body on earth has tabbed out this entire live solo. its an improv.
the most musical speed metalist I have ever seen.
The scary part is he's not looking about 95% of the time, he's looking at the audience...Here is a man at one with his guitar.
Paul Gilbert is a guitar god.
His fingers are in auto pilot mode 😂😂....he is amazing 😎🤘🤘🤘🤘
This is one of the most technically perfect solos ive ever seen yet still very soulful. Paul Gilbert is simply amazing.
th-cam.com/video/H0TMVQzC0Cg/w-d-xo.html
He has unique sound. in his guitar/amp. Twangy. I wouldn't necessarily play with that sound but it suits his style very well!
aah, freaking awesome. i wonder why Paul isnt more famous then he is, he realy should.
How could anyone argue?....Paul is the MASTER of shred guitar. Hands down. There's no contest. I'm sorry, you can hand over the Pulitzer right now, I'd like to thank everyone who voted. Bye now.
PAUL GILBERT=speed
MALMSTEEN=melody
STEVE VAI=feeling
ALEXI LAIHO=style
SATRIANI=hair
Exceptionally excellent guitarist incarnated with superb faculty, creative and artistic aptitude. The presentation was greatly spellbounding and induced hysterical madness!
oh my god....... i just cried to the beautiful lick he plays in 1:00 ..... fukin amazin
I remember my first time seeing Paul play live was at the Living Room in Providence back in 89 with Mr. Big. Amazing performance. Perfect in his skills as always. But Billy Sheehan just totally blew my face off.

Nu îl poate cânta pe Shawn Lane mate
I think in this concert he does an Eddie Van Halen intro.
Dude is just a machine. Melts faces hourly to this day 🤘
This guy is fucking amazing! One of the best ever!
Suomi!

If he shared his talent with a dozen others they would all be amongst the best musicians out there. Otherworldly levels of skill we should just admire and appreciate. If others haven't discovered him yet then that's their loss
He shared his talents to many modern greats through his intense rock 1&2 videos. Aggressive alternate picking would not exist without Paul.
I love his string skipping so much!! its totaly bomb... and i've been workin' my ass of here for a few days and im really startin' to get hit goin', Paul is so GREAT!
wow it even faster than the other version...love the arpeggio at 1:02!!!
Gilbert waaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww Goddddddddddddddddd he knws how to play decrecendo n crecendo which is vry hard wen playin but he nail if its notin to him wooooooooowwwwww
32 dislikes are only fake accounts of justin bieber!!
Mr big times!! the best times of paul's gilbert career...great!
Actually, it's fairly structured. He's explained every lick in this solo on a video in some form, or another. You can tab out every note in this video, but I would recommend just practicing the individual licks like he does.
the thing is gilberts a better person and better guitarist - shame he missed out the HUGE spotlight narrowly cos of unlucky circumstances
Amazing, totally insane
I appreciate Paul Gilbert alot more now that I actually play the guitar..that made the difference for me. PG is by far the most appealing thing to my ear now lolzz
how could he preserve his unique, single-coily tone for sooooo long?
i dont know about you guys but i enjoy listening to paul gilbert more than van halen.
You can tell this guy's sound influenced Buckethead a lot.
To me that makes it twice as amazing.
Buckethead used to be his student
I'd spend full ticket price to watch just this seven minutes in person.
Saw Mr Big open for Rush. Was worth every penny.
I love his clean tone...
i like how he screams into the pickups ;D Paul Gilbert is... and will always be... the favorite of all guitar players!
@xPurpleDrinkx9001 It's the same as his lick "Sequenced String Skipping", just transposed to a different key...not sure what key though, I haven't taken the time to figure it out
how does he make the 2:08 sound?? it's really amazing!!!
Scream into the pickups.
He literally screams right into the pickups!
if your going to flame somone on their grammar, make sure you spell your sentence correctly XD
I gotta agree with johnsone7777. This guy is technically fantastic, but he plays more like a machine than a musician. A good portion of that solo was nothing more than a bunch of arpeggio and scale exercises - stuff that should be reserved for the woodshed, not made into a feature part of the solo. evilrho the real machine player is Michael Batio
Really.. I love Eddie Van Halen I was 14 in 78
@malmsteen79ibanez
That would be fun like hell :) Watching Malmsteen get facemelted and totally humiliated would be fucking awesome \m/
love this... have it on DVD but jeez why not watch it on TH-cam too! Love that slangy six-sting cowboy sound... let me find a better word for it...
I saw another video where he played a lot of those licks, but in this one, he plays them almost twice as fast... amazing.
Yea Guthries' playing is amazing to! Check out his piece he does on the fretless guitar
he' actually screaming into his guitar pickups, so technically he isnt playing anything
no other guitar solo could compare to this..real guitar solo
i debate that.
So i start clicking on all these "shredder" videos and THIS guy is fukkin awesome. and it's like he's hardly moving his right hand. makes me want to give up guitar. I mean PRACTICE my guitar. yeah - oh and btw the bass player coming up and taking the drill off his hands at the end - thats fukkin teamwork.
at 1:03 what is that melody from?
Paul's solo is forever god-like but damn the tone here sounds fantastic.
Yeah his tone back then was great...
So sad he loses this because he had ear problem...yup, he still human like us but still amazing till now 😊👍👍🤘🤘
His guitar had a cigarette after this
um... it works, i guess. if you got the distortion cranked up to the max, it'll make a lot noise and it gets harder to get the notes cleanly. lucky paul, with his slight distortion ;)
God I hate that singer but I guess no really cares about the singer in any band containing Paul lol Might as well be the talking clock on vocals but i'd still go to the show. \m/

It had nothing to do with screaming...
who would not like this genius solo playing?
@las10plagas Are you... Umm.. Thinking of Eddie Van Halen? Cuz he uses a drill on their song "Poundcake." Right next to the pickups. Sounds awesome.
Another genius Paul certainly is top badd bot thank uou Paul Gilbert 👍 👏 😀 🙄 😉
Arguably the best guitar vid on youtube
Paul Gilbert was Bucketheads teacher on the guitar. Oooooh we need a teacher and student cconcert. ❤😊😮.
Haha, my dad got to meet Malmsteen, and said he was stuck up, and an asshole. But, Yngwie is a better shredder, but Gilbert is more melodic.
How ve he did not experienced finger over fatigue after that gruesome minutes of constant speeding
I think thats not solo (improvisated), because I see him playing exactly same thing on another video. Does someone know if that has a name?
tabs?

yaaayyy !!! wmg did not rape this video !!
he actually screams down the pickup to get that screamin sound.works with the feedback.Awesome.
Yeah, but Mustaine has much more charisma if Im honest, but i suppose the frontman has to have more than a lead guitarist. I hate people that say " oh Vai is the best everyone else is just some lame douche " there is no best it is personal preferance.
if i can start playing like that can i play in yalls band,i only ask for a can of chef boyardee raviolli.

@ripanrocks This was back in the 80s ... when 150 lbs was the average for 6 ft ... now it's 210!
