    I do try to find calm sunny days, although sometimes I get a hair up my butt and head for the chop. You and the 60 lb battery are sitting on the floor making for great stability. The short length makes it extremely manuverable. It's slow but fun on the waves.

    Great work Paul! Im currently finishing up a 6'11 3/4" LWL, 21.5" BWL, pocket sailboat with a 10 ft mast and it is completely made from recycled reclaimed wood and hardwares.
    I must say, I have been watching this video over and over again in the past two years, and finally broke down and did something with all the stuff I had been collecting.
    Thank you so much for your inspiration, and I hope to send you a link to my vid as soon as im done with sea trials!! cheerio mate!

    Armando, I'm serious. This little boat can take on some pretty choppy water. You and a heavy battery sit very low in the boat making it very stable.

    My experience with boats: Always keep a set of paddles with you just in case the engine dies. They have extendable paddles for canoes that contract into a very short and easily storable length, and when you need them you just expand them to normal length and you paddle your way to safety as if you were in a canoe.
    After watching you get into that boat, the first thing I thought about was "Wow, that thing is definitely NOT WIDE ENOUGH, not wide enough for stability as far as rolling over in rough waves is concerned.

    what a great project. My dad would build boats in the shop and give them away.He built me a 8 ft. hydroplane when I was 13 years old and it would scream, my mom hated it, when I got up on step it was like skipping stones across the water, I live in puget sound and its a way of life.

    Seeing that Ducq tour boat at the beginning reminded me of a trip to America and a similar Ducq tour around the Kennedy area (Hyannisport) in Cape Cod. I don't think I could ever board one of those tours again as the 'guide' is obliged to force those on board to pretend to be having a fantastic time, whereas all you want to do is relax quietly. Why must they do that? "Oh, this is the best group I've had all day!" and 'Come on everyone, as we pass this competitor's Ducq make out that you're uncontrollably excited to the point of hysteria!".
    At the other end of the spectrum is Paul's great electric boat. It's a one seater, so nobody can aggravate you except yourself, and you have total autonomy over whether you want to appear under the influence of strong psychiatric medicine.
    By the way, your electric boat is an absolute triumph Paul. I'm sure they would sell well, if you wanted to market them. Just wonderful, and thank you for sharing yet another marvellous project.

  • @paulwelkinsdiy
    @paulwelkinsdiy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's a paddle in the boat along with foam packed in the bow. The low center of gravity and 65 lb battery make this a VERY stable boat. Going full blast while turning sharp and leaning out of the turn with a side wave could probably upset the boat, so caution admittedly has to be taken, but I always fore warn dim witted first timers in the boat.

    Hello from Australia, I think a lot of people have missed the gist of what Paul has done. I believe plans would be a mistake, he has given us the overall dimensions and photos to work from. I have started my boat a while ago and am three quarters through and when i need to work something out i just refer to Paul's pics or video. As Jon Doe said, you can make all sorts of personal modifications. I'm not criticizing those who need to work from plans, but am just saying give it a go. Cheers.

    The upper control box was dis-assembled and the twist speed controller were mounted on my dash. The fiberglass shaft was shortened and the wiring spliced with a 4 prong trailer hitch disconnect. The wiring coming from the motor shaft is housed in clear flexible tubing and a rubber cap resides on top for water proofing.

    Picked up the plans from your site today, can't wait to get started! Think I'm going to line the inside bottom and up the side with some Kevlar arm guards my friend gives me instead of fiber glass mat. I'm a little bigger then the recommended pilot weight so I'm going to beef it up a little, maybe make it little wider. Your plans are awesome!

    • @paulwelkinsdiy
      @paulwelkinsdiy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +steggc85 Thanks steggc85. Widening a few inches would be good. Also add the flat bottom to the rear. You want at least 6" of freeboard so you can stay dry with waves coming from the sides. Good luck, and send me pictures if you want to be included on my website!

    I had this on fiberglass clothed on the outside because I just used Lowes 1/4" three ply paneling which isn't truely 1/4. On my first boat I used 1/4" marine grade ply on the top and bottom, (5 ply) and just used 2 part epoxy clear resin on the outside. This lasted for many years. I later painted it.

  • @paulwelkinsdiy
    @paulwelkinsdiy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mahogany 3 ply paneling purchased at a home improvement store. It's shy of 1/4"thick. cheap and is not difficult to bend.

  • @earlphillips9754
    @earlphillips9754 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Paul. I got your plans and I ordered Plywood today. By caculating the weight of the boat and the weight of myself I came up with a 5inch draft. So I will choose the flat bottom design. This is with a total of 300 lbs. Although my total weight will be a little less than 300lbs. This should be a piece of cake to a 20 year navy chief.

    I'm not sure what kind of paint would work best, but whatever you do, add a coat or two of 2 part epoxy resin over at least the exterior of the boat.

    ive done a couple; fiberglass will add durability and strength to the overall boat for sure, I'd go for it.
