Another fine review Vin. Agree on the opaque bottle front. Have to say the liquid it contains for the price (we haven’t paid more than £22.50 yet) is amazing from first pour to last. Four bottles in already on this particular dram, so easy to drink ... fabulous stuff. Loch Lomond whisky always features in the collection here, so big fans of what Michael Henry and his team are producing.
Loch Lomond are very popular in Sweden. Great value 12, 15, 18 years and a couple of NAS. They had an awesome 17 years organic cask strength. That one was very good.
What a delight. this does not drink like a 46% percenter, more like 40% so I can drink it without adding water or having an assault on my senses. Sometimes this is exactly what you want when just relaxing and don’t want do deal with something demanding. The peat is very manageable and would be a good introduction to peat or training your palate before moving on to big peat whisky. This is exactly why I bought a bottle. The peat is there yet the whisky is fresh, vibrant and fruity. Pleasantly surprised, just goes to show a budget whisky can be good.
Best value for money peated, supermarket whisky I've purchased in a long time. It's currently back to its £27.50 in Morrisons but still crackin' value and now replaces my usual guard whisky.. Berry Bros & Rudd peated cask blend. 🥃
I absolutely love this stuff. I'm half way through my third bottle now. I had to make it my WOTY because it's not only a great whisky but probably a unique one too IMHO. Great to hear your views on it and I'm glad you came around to it. Regarding the dark glass; I've never considered it as a negative. It protects the whisky and gives the distillery less reason to add e150a. I'd prefer that to being able to see how much colouring they've added. Although it is a pain trying to tell how much you've got left. Even worse with ceramic flasks! Has anyone invented a dipstick that's whisky safe? 🤔 You'll be pleased to know that I think LL only uses the dark glass on their two grain whiskies. So it may just be be range differentiation thing. The NAS single malt, 10, all three 12s, 14 and 18 are all clear glass 🥳 I fully agree with you that SWA should make it law to state if colouring has been added. It's a mark of shame on us Brits that colouring is even allowed when USA and some European countries outright ban it. You'd think that making the consumer aware so we can make an informed decision would be the least they could do. Cheers!
Literally picked this up not 3 days ago from Morrisons because it was dirt cheap! Didn't know it was just barley though... didn't think it tasted "grainy". Good effort!
I completely agree about the glass opaqueness... just let us know how much we have left without having to go to much trouble... I suppose the cheaper bottles it doesn't worry me as much but the top shelf stuff I find myself always aware of the level, and being able to have a quick glance to remind myself that there's plenty left is something I don't want to be robbed of
I got this for Christmas, my first couple drams I wasn't sure of. I get like a sour apple note on the smoke. Then when you said you preferred the neck pour I've poured another whilst I've watched and I definitely find it more enjoyable.
@@NoNonsenseWhisky will do. We're doing a Highland month. Glenmorangie original and cadboll estate Glen turret triple wood loch Lomond and Aberfeldy 12 Should be a good month.
Great review, I also wish they would say if added colour or not. Again with regards to oxidation I 100% agree. My go to core entry level whiskey for a new person who wants to try whiskey is cardhu gold reserve. Only 40%apv and not a super flavour on first opening. But once you get past the neck, it opens out into some wonderful flavours that aren't to complex to work out.
Good to see something for £22.50 getting a full review. Couldn't agree more about the rules on added colour, only by keeping up the profile will the SWA and HMRC bend to giving full transparency on what has been added with e150A and removed with filtration chilled or otherwise.
Was it in a box or tin? Perhaps opaque bottles are the way forward for producers who want to ditch the box/tin and not have the whisky affected by harsh supermarket lighting. No clue, but it's a thought.
Very surprised to see how much colour yours has where as mine is almost clear like new make. It certainly gets better and better after the first few pours. Ya got it for a steal, not that cheap here!
Mine is virtually uncoloured. Loch Lomond know the rules - if you don't put it on the bottle (and they tell us the other thing on the bottle) we can assume a negative. It seems ridiculous to put colouring in it because it's so pale anyhow. It is the sort of colour I would expect a very young whisky in re-used casks to look like anyway. Logically, that tells me something about this drink which I'll put in my comment.
Glad that you have come around on this Whisky Vin, but saying that it is always good to stick to your guns if you don't like a bottle. I got a lot of flak for rating the Dalmore Cigar highly and not being a fan of Glenallachie 10 CS. Never doubt your integrity though mate, keep the reviews coming in 2022!
This is a very interesting whisky and the most interesting thing about it is that it doesn't really taste like whisky as we know it. I think this is a young grain, coffey still, whisky aged in refill casks. That will produce a sweet grain flavour base. When you add the peat element into that it fleshes it out. It has a tiny bit of feint but stands up as a balanced whisky; except it doesn't really taste like whisky. It tastes more like a beefed up vodka or an amalgam of other white spirits. Vodka blended with gin perhaps. There's no peat profile that we would expect in a single malt and we aren't informed of the ppm. Don't misunderstand me, I like it but it the peat is negligible but it plays its part in lifting the flavour profile. It's a good value drink, perhaps better than any value whisky, but it's not typical. I'll go with my vodka/gin comparison.

It's definitely one of the drams that's priced incredibly well. Even at £25 it's still exceptional value. I need to try its sister bottle too

I definitely need to get more for my channel, I'm always impressed by their diversity
I tend to take a measure out for my infinity bottle before I take one for myself (Usually a few weeks later).
I haven't done an infinity bottle for a few years. Maybe I should get back into that
Never thought of that, good idea

Nice to see this one grew on you, LL are making an interesting range of whisky these days for sure.
I'm so pleased it opened up for me. I was gutted on the first taste

Yeah buying it was a bit of a no brainer. And it's loads better than other whiskies I can get for what I paid for it
Good stuff mate. I will have to keep an eye open for this. I have been curious about their Spearhead grain whisky.
I just got a sample of that with my Dram Team sub!

Its good stuff I think, it is sweet though. I think it benefits from ice seems to help it settle.Nice succint review.
I probably should have tried that. Sadly this bottle is long gone!

It's may have been a bit of colour correcting in post. It is very pale

Absolutely, if it would have stayed the way it was on the neck pour I'd have had no problems saying I didn't like it
The whiskey just after the neck pour must be called the shoulder pour, surely.
I'll go for that!

I think it's that atypical profile that really challenged me at the start of my time with it. Very different indeed
Got this one from Morrisons for 20 quid, what a bargain it is the best peated whisky I have ever tasted by far imo better than Laphroaig 10
May I ask where did you get it from for around the £22 mark? A good video like always. 👍
This one came from Morrison's, though Amazon often mirror that price. It's usually like 27 or something
