How to remove the lens from a modern headlight

- In this video I will show you how to remove a headlight lens using a heat gun.
I will use the heat gun to warm the plastic and glue holding the lens onto the headlight body.
As the glue is warmed and softened, I will use a pair of flat head screw drivers to "walk" around the lens and pry it away from the body. I will use the screw drivers to cut the glue as I go.
When doing this it is best to take your time, use low heat (225-250 degrees F/ about 120 C). The headlight housing and lens will melt if over heated.
This method will work on most headlights including Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, and more.
The purpose was to replace the broken lens.. and now you have to replace everything.
So helpful, have you got any other tips on how to destroy a car?😂😂😂😂😂😂
Using heat, yes. Heat gun, no. You're really toasting that housing. Throw the whole assembly in an oven at 200-215 degrees and that glue will release without over-melting the housing.
degrees what? F or C
They bake them in a conveyor belt oven at the factory. So they can handle some heat. It's best to use an oven and temp gun and bake it 160-200 for like 20 min give or take.
They bake them for about 10 min at the factory. I used to work at the place that makes headlights for Nissan, datson, Honda, Cadillac, and other types of aviation, marine lighting.
I always knew you baked them but never how long, appreciate this
@houseking9211 yea I definitely wouldn't go for to long or go to hot.
It’s okay to just stick the whole assembly in an oven like that? My Mazda’s right headlight lens cracked and I’d like to replace just the lens which is how I got here.. also curious what you do to adhere the new lens to the assembly
@@_alltheseprettylights_I wanna try this with some headlights but they have led, do you know if the heat could affect it?
Thanks for the info😊
Thanks for the video.
I was thinking of getting a replacement shell, but after watching this, hell no. The whole assembly it is. Cost more, but less than loosing my sanity.
I was looking for a helpful video, this is not it
And now I'll show you how to order whole new headlight assemblies that come with new lens
Can you order just a lens?
How not to remove headlights
The oven method is the best
If they still used glass this wouldn't be an issue.
Glass cracks and shatters from rocks on the highway. Plastic doesn't. My car has glass lenses on the fog lights. I've had to replace them numerous times due to being cracked from rock hits.
@@gftgrill I've had glass headlights on my 98 4runner for 25 years, and rock chips were a part of life for everything BUT the headlights. Glass headlights are strong as hell.
@@gftgrill Lower fog lights might be a different story.
Nice, but open by cutting the lens seems a more clean job btw
Good job, now I know what not to do. I would rather bake them, at least you have some control on time and temperature. The heat gun is a complete mess. Thanks a lot.
more like how to destroy a headlight and two screw drivers.
This melted mine 😡
A heat gun on plastic at any temp is not good. Instead use a hear drier, more controllable heat and not so destructive if used right and lot of Patience.
so you want to remove it "assuming you want to clean the inside) and you break it? sorry but this video is basically worthless because you screwed up the job
Does anybody if the lens covers are interchangeable in all 2015+ base or adaptive headlights?
Why not? Headlight adapt to road via steering or camera behind the driver front glas. If the lens is close to equal it does not change the beam pattern thus "adaptive" headlight won't notice something..
Other more important DO YOU PLACE THE NEW HEADLIGHT IN THE EXACT SAME SPOT AS BEFORE? I am sure not so even the smallest movement needs light adjustment
why too much work
I've seen people do that by baking the headlight in an oven at 250 F for half an hour or so.
This "Berserk" is using flat screw drivers?? Seriously, if you want to keep using the light, be extremely careful and maybe use a spatula or something wider than a screw driver. Also be mindful of the temperature and use a thermometer or thermostat. Some glues will soften between 80 and 90 °C. Heat guns can do up to 600 degrees !!
And that's why you read the video description first..
But good point!
Thust take a hamer still the same gona be what u are doing
I need my lamps fixed
I think I'd rather just buy new ones, lol.
Lol this guy screwed up big time 😅
Crap advice.
great ! this really helped me
😂
Does this method work for the Tesla 2016-2020 headlights?
What type of glue you use to glue back on?
I usually use a RTV clear silicone sealant
I think it would be easier just buying brand new headlights.
