I take flight training here at KHUT. They are not an FAA shop, but a privately owned ATC operation. Often there's one controller working both tower and ground. Usually on a clear day that's not that bad, but on a day like this, it is less than desirable. Other than that, it is a nice towered airport that is usually quiet so it is a nice place to train.

Best thing to take from this video is the ATC communication. Most pilots will try and stretch their workload just to answer a simple ATC question. Aviate navigate communicate. In a go around/missed approach workload is high enough.

Great video showing the pilot is in control here. From asking for a turn to final to clearance for the approach to waiting to talk with tower to get the plane cleaned up.

I watched this again. My biggest worry when going to an airport that is close to mins is where am I going to go next. Knowing that weather is always changing I want to then get somewhere that is good enough to get down and flying all over the place. What goes through your mind when you know you're going to have to choose an alternate. Granted I know you were not doing a precision approach, but just curious.

Hi Brian, Your concern is well founded. Single pilot IFR in low weather requires ATP level skills and knowledge. Get proper training then stay within the limits of the aircraft and your SOP. You do have a written SOP don't you? Fly Safely - Train Often

The extremely poor ATC handling in this video carries a chilling resemblance to the poor instructions provided in the NTSB report regarding the flight which ultimately claimed the life of the plane's pilot and passenger in this very airplane. Dick clearly shows how important it is for the pilot to be fully aware of their situation and reminds us when we are the one flying, we are pilot in command! If you get a clearance you're uncomfortable with, turn it down or if necessary go missed approach.
