What if HECU and the whole Black Mesa was actually somehow inspired by Evangelion's NERV and this particular scene? It really makes me sick when I think about it.
They've referenced Japanese media before like with the lifts in Unforeseen Consequences and Lambda Core being taken directly from Akira, so it's definitely possible. EOE did come out in 1997 which is when the development team were going through Half-Life and rebuilding it from the ground up on all fronts (gameplay, narrative, graphics) before its release a year later, but that would mean that someone on the dev team had to have either found a fansubbed version of the film online or ordered a fansubbed copy overseas. That sounds kind of flimsy, but I have heard stories of people importing subtitled anime overseas, so again, definitely a possibility. But yeah, when you look at the two, there are a lot of parallels. Bombing the surface of an underground facility that isn't exactly built to withstand those sort of attacks, sending in an inane amount of troops armed with heavy weapons and equipment to kill thousands of defenseless people, targeting unassuming and ordinarily non-threatening individuals (the three children, Gordon Freeman), and lastly, the party being attacked acknowledging the fact that their human enemies are far more dangerous than their extraterrestrial enemies... so without going back to the matter of how someone managed to watch the film, there's definitely some very strong similarities between the two. The only real difference between the two military forces is that the JSSDF believe themselves to be doing the right thing since they were told by their commander-in-chief (who is unwittingly a pawn of SEELE) that NERV plans to end the world by initiating Third Impact. Contrariwise, the HECU are aware of the fact that the resonance cascade is (on the surface level) an accident, but are willingly murdering innocent people by complying with the order to cover-up the incident. Their respective moral situations are also made clear by how they react to their circumstances: the JSSDF treat the attack as if it were a game, with the soldiers that find Shinji laughing at the fact that they're going to kill a child. The HECU, however, state their discomfort and doubt regarding their mission on multiple occasions. Personally, I love both of these scenes since they both stray away from the standard type of conflict in their narratives while at the same time emphasizing their deeper themes. It's a really great way to explore the human mentality since in these stories where the conflict exists between humans and aliens, introducing an element where humans are forced to fight other humans allows for the author to explore how we, as a species, can be just as -- if not more -- brutal than the monsters we are supposed to believe are savage and destructive.
@@Anion-mara the grunts seem to be convinced that at least freeman is a saboteur. so the coverup might be cloaked to the average grunt who all they know is somehow black mesa caused an alien invasion. several of them probably believed black mesa's staff to be terrorists or conspiring with the aliens. the higher command staff knows that it's a coverup though.

The resemblance to both operations is very close, although knowing if NERV is as big as Black Mesa is a bit difficult, but what is different is that the main Character instead of "Save" the world what he does is destroy it, well the other is not that he will save him, probably the World of Half Life had a number of deaths close to or greater than the second impact of Evangelion.

This really sucks, but I'd rather this video be viewable than not viewable at all. Just when I thought that this video had managed to escape the follies of copyright... Good lord, this is finally out. After about a week of going back and editing it over and over again, it looks like I finally managed to get it to the point where it can actually be watched by people. Hopefully it stays that way. Anyways, remember how the Evangelion videos were supposed to go onto my second channel? Yeah, so much for that. I plan on (maybe) uploading gaming videos onto there. I did record some gameplay commentary for League of Legends but that didn't really go anywhere. As for the "EVA POINT" series, as I am going to call it from now on, I've decided that it would be healthier for the main channel if I uploaded them here. It never hurts to have a bit of variety. This video was a lot of fun to edit, at least before copyright claims became an issue. I love both Half-Life and Evangelion, so when I heard that replacing sounds from various media with Half-Life sound effects was an actual thing, I immediately got to working on this video. It took a while since I wasn't sure about how to direct it, but I'm really satisfied with how it all turned out. Since memes come and go, I was really hoping that this video wouldn't go up too late, but you know, this video got blocked five different times thanks to copyright. Speaking of copyright claims, I didn't plan on including the HUD in that last scene, but I figured it would be instrumental in helping me get the video onto TH-cam, and honestly, I'm glad I decided to add that in. Well they got attacked by the JSSDF, during the period of EoE, they received massive funding and new tech to combat the Angels, so they probably never even saw them coming, and never expected it.
