Man I love you. What an honest analysis of the crash-no ego, just honesty. And thanks for sharing the information on your injuries. You are a very special person. I wish the very best for you. BTW, the medical device that kept your foot in traction is an external fixator. It sounds like you got 1st class care. I’m a doctor in the US and I’m very impressed! Please take care Naska.

What an amazing guy. No blame - he owns the issue. He does not deflect or excuse. He analyzes to teach us and improve for next time. Finally, he acknowledges the medical staff and thanks them. It's not often I am impressed with a guy, like I am here.

Im happy to hear your health care is free. The last time I crashed a bike I broke my arm and it financially crippled me for over a year.
I am extremely impressed at how you can analyze the entire process and learn from it.

"Free" medical care is a human right. The US spends billions of tax dollars on military equipment to "defend" it's citizens, when they could be better spent on medical care to actually save their lives.

Best wishes and SPEEDY recovery Alberto! Maybe this will make you heal faster. I did my first Track Day at 62 years old. I was a MotoCrosser many many moons prior. I love it! On day two, with a little precipitation, too much enthusiasm and not enough experience, I did a massive HIGH SIDE! I broke my clavicle into 7 pieces, broke ribs two through eight front and back, broke my pelvis but a nice break, and had a collapsed lung. I got back on the horse nearly one year later, and I LOVE it more! Only wish I had started earlier, and wish I had learned to walk before I tried to run! Love your channel!

Your honesty and humble spirit is too beautiful. I could definitely use a friend like you. I hope and pray that you will be better soon and back on the bike. I'd think twice about racing again if I was you. I'm 63 and enjoy my superbike. I've adjusted to: "I don't have to be fast, because my bike is". That doesn't mean that I'm crawling. I just don't allow the adrenaline to rule.

I can't believe how unlucky you are, I'm really, really, really sorry for you.
What is most admirable is how positive you are. I really have to say I admire you.
also how you have improved with your motorcycle, so if someone does not give you props, they are just envious.
So it's a shame that nothing more of you will come from the race track in the near future, but the most important thing is that you get 100% healthy again.
I wish you all the best with all my heart and that you will be fully fit again next year.

Sorry to hear bro! Hope you have a good recovery! I’m sure you are going to miss riding but you will be back on the track soon. Just listen to your great doctors! Good luck!
I’m currently healing from 2 broken wrists/hands, and a tibial plateau fracture(top of leg bone, right below the knee, so can’t move or put weight on the whole leg or foot) from a motorcycle accident. Doctors are amazed I’m alive. Can’t even start to try to walk for 8weeks. I feel your pain. But I can’t wait to get back on my bikes again!! Ride safe! Maybe do some product reviews and/or racing breakdown videos while you’re recovering, if you feel up to it. Get well soon brother!

I clicked on this random video and watched it all. You have a certain magnetism that kept me watching. I'm happy I did. I hope you heal fast and return to the track soon, my friend. Cheers.

This is actually so helpful to understand what can go wrong and why. Too quick on the throttle, before the rear wheel has enough weight for proper traction, then an over correction and that is what caused the high side.
    Thanks for uploading this.

As a physical therapist, I have worked with many people following injuries such as these. You are indeed very fortunate not to have damaged your spinal cord. That is why those first responders kept you from moving around! An unstable fracture of the spine can easily shift and damage that precious bundle of nerves that allows your brain to communicate with the rest of your body. I loved hearing about the experience from the perspective of the person living it, rather than from the perspective of the health care providers. Those external fixators are crazy aren't they? Seems like it worked for you. As your doctors have probably already told you, your risk of developing arthritis in that ankle is higher now. The joy of racing makes the risk of injury and long term consequences worthwhile huh? Best of luck to you! Thanks for sharing.

I also had a racing motorcycle accident and broke my astrágalo. luckily I was operated on the very day, it took me almost 1 year to recover, the physiotherapy is quite hard but it helped a lot in the recovery of the mobility of the foot. nowadays I can do everything like the old days but I don’t have total mobility in the broken foot, luckily the limitation is small and doesn’t limite anything when driving motorcycles. I wish you a speedy and good recovery

I've been following all your videos. As bad as crashing sucks, it is cool to figure out what went wrong. When you crash without all the video and data, you still never try to figure out what went wrong. You try and break down every little thing. My last crash broke my right femur, and if you think that is painful, while I was in a local hospital I had to call home to my wife !

  • @lrowlands53

If you can get your head around it, starting a bike race is the most dangerous part of the whole event - chaos; everyone in the corner, tyres cold, brakes cold, head not in the flow yet, etc., so being able to be smooth and 'slow' (not rushing) until things spread out is a way to survive and to win races. In other words, you know you go fastest when your head is going slow, when you flow through corners - the opposite of that adrenalin filled rushing at the start. Very difficult to do but essential. All the best Alberto.

Thanks for the update! Great content as always! Don't worry too much about your ankle mobility at the moment! Keep up with your exercises and as the swelling around the ankle and foot reduces you will find that increased mobility will return naturally (the swelling is the body protecting the injury) and your progress will be better than you expect!
Moto GP has a lot of crashes to keep you busy on your channel! Can you go over some of them? especially Maverick Vinales amazing jump off the bike when his brakes failed at over 200km and he had no big injuries!

I feel your pain. Rehab from one of my elbow surgeries wast one of the most grueling thing I have experienced. My only advice is to push through as much pain as you can handle so you can get as much range of motion back as possible. If you don't push through the pain you can lose quite a bit of motion. Good luck on your recovery! (I know it's been months but yea, still!)

Wow, this is some production you have put together! It was fascinating to see the telemetry right next to the video. What I wouldn't have given to have that when I raced. Of course, that 40 years ago. :) Best of luck on your healing and I look forward to your videos!

I know you are not making motorcycle videos, but let this channel be as is.
P.S I have learned so much from you, this can be your secondary channel to make educational videos / pod casts related to motorcycle. You have a knack for explaining stuff I am sure people subscribed to your channel will be delighted to see you back even if you are not keen on racing motorcycles.

It is good to hear that you are doing well Alberto. Make certain that you are doing movement therapy on the foot and ankle as the doctor says, no matter how much it hurts so you can get back on the track next season. We all look forward to your continued video content while healing. All the best to you Alberto.

the rule number one of the Twist of the Wrist still holds in your case. it sounds simple but it may be very hard to apply every time in real situations. sometime we are under pressure to win or just some ego goes ahead and bypasses the rule. Thank you for sharing and wish you best luck to recover. I believe you can do lots of things during the recovery! Thank you again.

Thanks for sharing your unfortunate and unlucky accident, your analysis of the accident will for sure make others aware of the things that can add together to create the situation for a high side. My throttle control will return to the smooth on lean angles!!! . I’m very happy that you are on the road to recovery. I hope to see you back on a bike soon. I wish you a Speedy recovery .

I have only had the rear break loose in much slower corners, and I still only catch myself from shutting the throttle at the point I have already closed it halfway. Shutting the throttle is so instinctive, it's hard to stop yourself.
Good luck on the recovery, and be careful with the opioids!

I'm glad you came out alive. Good to hear healthcare is amazing in Italy so you have less to worry about and can focus on healing! I have taken a lot of your tips in your videos and applied them to myself at the track and have helped me become more confident in my riding and quicker. Can't wait to see you back out there blasting around the tracks! Get well soon!

I’ve had 2 low sides in the past 4 months, second one resulting in broken talus (astragalus) and fibula. Stay strong ! Wishing you a speedy recovery 🙏
In America we call that apparatus on your foot/leg a traction pin/pins. Had it for my femur one upon a time.

14:30 exactly what happened with my dad, his bone just below the knee portion broke into several small pieces (crushed) in a bike accident in 2005, first they surgically removed a couple of very small pieces, then put everything at place then stitched it back then drilled a hole in the ankle, put some weight and was left in that situation for a month for the bone to self heal.
The whole procedure took him an year to walk because his mobility below the hip went *ZERO* and it took physio therapist over 6 months to bring it back to workable 80%....
    Hope you recover soon....

Ciao Alberto, I am so sorry you had a accident, I wish you a speedy recovery. You are a very inspirational person who always says it how it is and is honest which is very hard to find now days. As another person mentioned, if your interested you could do gear reviews or informational tutorials on how to ride/race to keep yourself busy. I wish you all the very best to get back to what you love. All the best Mario

Sorry to hear about your injury & I’m glad you’re safe.... I really enjoy your videos. They are very informative even when it’s not about motorbike riding. Hope it doesn’t hinder your riding career as I think you are a very good rider. Another thing I was thinking about , that you might consider that adds to the unsprung power when released causing the high side. Is the fact that under acceleration the wheel rim turns but the tyre stays behind, stuck to the track. The side walls of the tyre load up a slight rotation behind the rim position. (Picture the 2 parts of the wheel rim & tyre are at 12 :00 o clock, You accelerate, the wheel turns to 12:07. But the tyre stays at 12:00 more gas, wheel now at 12:10 ... then the tyre instantly tries to catch up to the wheel rim. This also adds to the power of the high side.) These figures are exaggerated / hypothetical of course. Back in the 80’s & 90’s during the 2 Stroke GP & non traction control era it was noticeably visible. Tyre technology has gotten better but it would still be part of what causes a high side. Much like a drag car wheels sidewalls wrinkle on the quarter mile at the start. Any way keep the videos coming ... Get well soon. Hello from Australia 🇦🇺
