the funny part is as of today, the very same management who were the focus of this documentary has now released a press release stating that TRF is distancing themselves from the reality show...
Heaven help all of us booth owning artists and the management of most Renaissance Faires that will have to spend the next 10 years explaining to the patrons that most of us are not at all like this. That most faires are not at all like this. That most craftspeople and artists are not like this. That we are just normal people with mortgages and insurance and kids trying to make a living.
My partner grew up going to and eventually working at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and I can say for certain you are correct. Largely they're slightly odd folks who've found a way to make a living doing something they love. I feel sorry for everyone who's going to have to explain this ten million times each weekend.
@@lizh1167 exactly, we are a large family, we accept everyone into our family and we vary in levels of being slightly odd but not in a bad way. It makes meal times and get togethers way more interesting than the average family BBQ. But this makes it seem like we are all calculating, creepy and cut throat. Not my experience with the many vendors we have been fortunate enough to do many shows with over the last 40ish years. Nothing like trying to drum up viewership by giving an entire community a bad name.

....except the first Renaissance Faire was started by PHYLLIS PATTERSON IN 1963 IN CALIFORNIA, where George was a stained glass vendor. As someone who has been performing on the faire/festival circuit since 2004 (and attending since the early 90s), I can already tell this is going to be a Trainwreck. Also, a good chunk of faires began, Not to "be like George". **longest exasperated sigh, in soothe** Not to mention the massive cultural-economical differences between a Renaissance Festival that is year-round constructed, versus faires who are more flexible in theme/time period/setting in their niche and are composed of tents on large lots/parks........on-site faires like Oklahoma Renaissance Festival, Scarborough Faire, Kansas City, Sterling, Bristol, Michigan; tent faires like Midsummer Fantasy Faire, Medieval Faire of Norman, Heavener Viking Runefest, Celticfest, and so forth.
yep...thanks for this post...it's all about the cringe factor anymore
@@LouKiss Thanks for giving credit where credit is due. And spouting facts. It is going to be hard to break people of their views of faires after this show aires.
Yes! Back in the 80's, I worked at both of Phyllis Patterson's Living History Center Renaissance Faires: in Black Point Forrest in Marin County and down south at the now burned Paramount Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains (Agoura Hills) just north of LA.
She was the one who started Renaissance Faires, and they were amazing! She was serious about EVERYTHING being period appropriate, allowing a fully immersive experience.
It was such an wonderfully eclectic group of people that worked together to make it happen!
Good times, indeed!
You didn't mention the Georgia Renaissance Festival (a year-round constructed faire outside of Atlanta). What is it's reputation? I have friends who have or still work for them, and I've heard varying reports on their ownership and management. Thoughts?
@@RockneOliver to be honest, I don't know! I know folks who have worked Florida, Maryland, Arizona, several in California, New York, and Colorado, but I haven't met Georgia folks yet! No news is good news, I guess?
No matter how crazy George comes off in this, I can assure you, he's worse.
I know a handful of former workers, and I've heard nothing but horrible things about George. He looks and sounds VERY toxic in this trailer. 😬
This comment needs to be displayed before every episode

"Faire cousin" from a different festival here.....I believe you and have heard the same :(
@@claytonjohnson3966 I've worked TRF for 20+ years. George is... yeah.
Everything I've ever heard about Texas Renneisance Festival management from the shop owners and staff make them seem like the worst people.
It's true (ex employee)
The shop owners are a mixed bag, some have been pretty great to work for, but they are all independent. Anyone actually official, yeah the worsy
That makes me sad because we go every year and love it. I do hate that it's just becoming bar after bar after bar. Pushing out the artisans
They were saying the shop owners agree faire management have major issues.
They used to have a couple of good people running the show but George has gotten more and more money hungry as it's gone on any sacrificed senior management that made the show run well for management that can bring in a few extra dollars even if it means backstabbing everyone else working there
The only worse person, arguably, is the guy who owns MN’s ren fest. MNRF is my home faire that I worked for 11 seasons, and heard from people who work the circuit that Jim Peterson is somehow worse.
This feels like a reality show masquerading as a documentary
It is, so was tiger king
It's a documentary in the tradition of Frederick Wiseman, which predates reality TV. Look up his films. Reality TV also echos Wiseman's work somewhat, which is why you could have that impression.
@@charlesleroq932 Very interesting! i'll investigate this thank you!
@@charlesleroq932 Thanks for that info!
I lived on King Georges land for a few years and he is absolutely crazy.
YOU should make a documentary (not being sarcastic, I realize how that could sound sarcastic in text but I genuinely want to hear your stories about crazy George)
What? Who came up with this? The Renfaires were first invented by Phyllis Patterson, history teacher, and friends in the early 60's in Southern California as a benefit, I believe, for KPFA. Then they got very popular, and eventually the Pattersons became the owners of the Southern and then Northern California Renaissance Faires, and the rest is history as others developed Faires around the country. I did the New York, Maryland, and Arizona Renfairs for 20 years, and remember with great affection my life then.
Close. Phyllis started out by planning and executing a summer continuing education event for the school her son attended, Laurel Canyon Elementary school. The program was very successful, and has a history teacher, she saw the potential for an event open to the public to fund more educational programs. I wasn't there for the earliest years, but did attend the workshops Phyllis gave on how the Faire started. By the time I became involved, it had been a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) educational corporation for some time, and the whole purpose of the public part of the Faire on weekends was to make possible the education portion during the week. Schools would send entire classes of kids, from elementary schools on up to middle schools, and a select few of the performers and artisans would be there to get the kids involved in hands-aspects of life in the Renaissance. Once inside, those kids saw nothing that was period-appropriate and as historically accurate as we could make it; it was as close to time travel as is possible to do.
actually,
the First faire was in 1870 by Judge Dannely in FL when he held a Medieval Faire, but Phyllis is known to keep the idea going.
No, George made this renaissance fair
I know everything about the renaissance fair cause my mom and grandpa works there😊
Yes Phyllis and Ron Patterson started the first and original Renaissance Faire in the very early 60s - it was a benefit for KPFK, the Southern California Pacifica . They also taught at ISOMATA (the Idyllwild, School of Music and the Arts) in California, which was run by USC. They held their prototype faire - a Gypsy Faire there in 1962 I believe, a year or two before the first Renaissance Faire. I worked at the Faires for many years, mainly in SoCal.
I have a lot of friends who's worked Renfaire. The guy at the end with the hand cannon came and put of a salute at my uncle's wake with that thing. Just, been awesome. However every Rennie worth their salt will agree that George is bat$hit insane.
That being said, I wonder how many of them I'll know.
The pyrotechnician is also a completely insane narcissist and abuser. Fortunately, the majority of Rennies are lovely people.
He taught my brother and I how to sword fight and was a mentor to us he is a really good guy and funny af
I'm sorry, are they claiming "George" invented the Renaissance faire? That's a blatant lie.
Maybe they're trying to imply that TRF was the renfaire that set the standard for the rest of the circuit?
Still sketchy to say, for sure.
Hey man, carnies gonna carn
I thought the oldest ren faire and the one that “started it all” was Southern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire.
@@PahzWatchesTH-cam It is.
@@jackdaone6469 No, TRF did NOT set the standard and thank goodness for that.
There's a big one held at my local county park in Southern California. The park is usually empty, but the place is packed with caravans, large trailers, and cars when the Faire happens. People from all walks of life trying to have a good time role playing their favorite era. It's also a marketplace for local/independent artists to sell items they can't do anywhere else. I hope this documentary celebrates these people just trying to have a good time.
I used to work that Renfest back in the 90's. To this day its still one of my favorite experiences.

The BLR "Medieval Fun Park" YT video comes to life!
Well, that explains the exponential price hike for tickets the last couple years.
Yeah I haven't been able to afford to go last year and I'm not sure about this year.
I'm sure that this is mostly fictional (like 90%) but TRF used to have some great people running it and it was really popular -- then George started replacing them with people who had no issues with backstabbing everyone else to get the faire a few extra dollars of profit each year. It led to a lot more money in sponsorships & a lot higher prices for attendees
@@joshuaandrade3971 They don't even have Sale of the Century anymore!
One of my friends couldn't afford to go every weekend anymore. He used to buy a season pass every year and go every weekend and he knew a lot of the faire workers. He'd hang out with me when I would go and would show me around and introduce me to his friends there in shops, performers, etc.
He has had to start working in one of the shops to be able to afford access at all. He usually works at a retail shop and like myself doesn't make enough money to pay full price.
We only have so many years in this life and it would be really fun to be able to "Lift up our cares" for a reasonable price.
Another friend of mine works in the shops to get access now too. She's a student and doesn't have the money to pay full price.
I finished watching it and yep! the price hikes are because of greed. We stopped going in 2021. It became so expensive every corner. Also the shows were repetitive. They don’t come up with new acts.
What I dont get is, no matter what event it is. No matter how much the raise and raise the prices.. More and more people keep going?!! Even now with terrible economy and inflation. They raise interest rates to get people to STOP spending.. and they just keep spending like crazy. People are Nuts now. Spending like crazy on everything and nothing stops them?!
We trusted the filmmakers to do our lives Justice when we allowed them into our back of fair lives. They did us an injustice with this making us look absolutely unlike what we really are. This is absolutely disparaging
I could tell, at one point it felt like a mockumentary or fictional movie.
@@LordJonRay As someone who was suckered by "reality tv" (what became "Extreme Cougar Wives), I can tell you that this is stock in trade. My condolences.
Never get in front of a camera without an agent and a lawyer. It never works out in your favor without representation.
@@haku-jin I made it to the last group of interviews for the reality TV Show "The Quest" years ago and didn't make the final cut. But it looked like they had a lot of fun on that show.
I use to run a pagan church. Over the 10 years we only had one problem with the local paper. I showed the article around to other pagan groups around the country and if they were upset about the article we asked them to email the reporter and the paper. Two weeks later the paper begged us to have people stop emailing them. Never trust a production company or news outlet unless you have a large flyswatter and a good lawyer.🧙♂

Cuz this guy is even worse! Doesn't look like you're gonna learn that from this. There's a podcast about it too.
@@TylerPaulson-mm8euwhich podcast? I need to learn about this guy.
Yesss! It definately felt that way watching it.
Comment section is a tribute to the Gell-Mann effect: Reading a newspaper article (or documentary) on a subject you know a lot about and seeing how badly they get it wrong, then turning the page and automatically believing whatever else they are reporting on. I've worked at this faire for 12 years.
Not sure if any of this is supposed to be real. Every faire is different, mainly because of the owners, and George is far from a typical owner. This is a unique faire and a unique story and very likely fictionalized in certain ways. However he may well be the most successful of all because he kept putting money back into his festival instead of taking profits and crying poverty when it comes to upgrading or paying performers. The amount of money flowing at TRF is staggering. Never met the man but there are stories and most of them are probably true.
The whole concept is fascinating to me; power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's a TRAILER designed to grab interest. I'll wait for the full episodes to determine how Ren faires in general come off. I've seen some pretty bad ones already. And people in general have no idea (and misconceptions) if they have not actually attended a real one. Great production and interesting concept to base it around the power struggles.
Is this the guy King of the Hill made fun of with that Alan Rickman character?
How now Gas Man?
Weird seeing a documentary set inside Ren Fest which me, my wife and our friends has gone to almost every year since 2016. We skip the last 2 years but this might get me in the mood to go again.
No more people need to stop going.. they keep raising prices yet people keep on going more and more all the time. It has to stop.. this is also why inflation won't go away. People just keep spending no matter what.
if safdie brothers made a fictional documentary
Wait so it IS a documentary?
It's not an actual documentary. It's a docu-drama, so the story is total fiction
What I read was the “fictional” part was added whimsy like if someone was in a statue garden the statues would talk. Obviously haven’t seen it yet, but it’s likely it’s real. The trailer looks real so far.
@@sweetinlace0105it’s real that George uses the excuse of role playing 24/7 and not “breaking immersion” to abuse anyone he sees fit
As a rennie this breaks my heart good lord
This looks cool. I'm from Texas and I love Ren Fest. Small aside, but everyone I know in Texas calls it "Ren Fest" not "Ren Faire."
I've been going to these things for years, and I'm still not sure if I should call them fairs, faires, or festivals.
The official name is Texas Renaissance Festival, so I think calling it "Ren Fest" either way is accurate. I've been calling it Ren Fest since the early 80's. :)
Long time TRF Patron, I've known allot of faire workers and heard stories. Very interested to see this.
Renfaires everywhere will have to live this down. This is doing a great injustice to those that work these faires and make a living as artisans.
I just finished this, and can't tell if it was supposed to be a documentary, or an A24 film.
Now I want to see an iseki were the people of a renfair are transported to a fantasy world and all their fake stuff is made real. There fair becomes an actual kingdom but they keep their memories and have to deal with all the other nations around them.
Brilliant marketing for the 50 year anniversary season. If it didn’t have drama and “Heros and Villains” it wouldn’t be a show. Just like the mini series “Chernobyl” was overly dramatized, it’s why it got all the views.
Reading the comments to this trailer has made me want to watch it more than the trailer itself. I'm so in. Can't wait to carve out time to watch.
Louie, slow down on the Red Bulls dawg. 😂
I know!!! I told my husband he’s going to die of a heart attack before he can buy the festival!!!
This is not a fair and accurate representation of the character of the people I know in this film. Please please know that.
Is it better or worse? 😂
@@mysticpirate Sadly, it's probably both. Word is Darla was led from the grounds of TRF in handcuffs last year, Jeff was already hired and fired as GM and is now back as Entertainment director as far as I know, and I have no idea how Louie would handle things if he got the "throne". All I know is that whoever it is will need to actually set aside their ego for a bit to take a hard look at what needs to be done to move TRF forward. In some ways George is a big picture guy, in that he always had an umbrella vision for the Festival, but most of that vision involved catering to his eccentricities. TRF needs a massive amount of infrastructure work on the grounds, and also needs to have a complete financial audit so whoever becomes the new owner knows what the situation is. It's pretty much guaranteed to be a shitshow regardless.
Thank God somebody gets it.

Elara Pictures should be ashamed of themselves. Lance Oppenheim unfortunately will now get the reputation as dishonest and misrepresenting when doing any more "Documentaries". HBO should not air the series.
If they lack the skills to actually make a real Documentary people will watch, Elara shouldn't be attempting them...
Just out of curiosity, who at TRF should this be about? My reality as a non-road TRF shoppe worker of 20+ years is different from the owner of King's Feast which is different from a cast member which is different from someone in the front office. Over 5000 people work at TRF every year. There's not just TRF story to tell.

@@Bfordandafter I don't think this is about the everyday life of a Rennie tho.
